On the visit to trade my coin, a young woman helped me. I'm not sure she ever understood what I wanted and I believe this was key to the problem - I never got to talk to someone with decision making authority. I was hoping to return the original coin in the case and trade it for a similar, but "raw" or ungraded coin that would display the way I wanted. There were several of this type of coin in the display cases that I mentioned. This woman went to the back to ask the "boss" what was possible. She returned to say they could provide a coin of the same date out of the case. I agreed. I then found out that it would be an even trade because they'd uncased another coin. Basically, the coin store took the sealed, guaranteed coin and replaced it with a raw coin - which was fine except the raw was worth much less. Since I'd been told the added price on the cased coin was only for the plastic and paper explaination, I expected something of a refund. I asked about this and the young woman said that the boss wanted it to be an even trade.
Here's what should have happened:
1. I should have been able to talk to someone who understood what I wanted, who had the expertise to show me raw coins in the display cases and suggest whether trades for these were possible whether that was the boss or another clerk
2. If the store didn't accept returns, this should have been stated up front. I would have been ok with this.
3. If the store did accept returns, I needed to have the price difference of the raw coin and my sealed coin if the only one available was one they took from a sealed case as it lost it's value the minute it was unsealed.
Instead, Northern Nevada Coin has lost a customer and I won't hesitate to not recommend this store. I figured I got taken and that this is Northern Nevada Coin's standard method of doing business.
"Dear customer, 1.The coin you purchased was a Carson City Morgan dollar in a GSA case. The value of the year you purchased is the same whether the coin is in a case or out of a case. We do not charge less for coins that are out of those cases as the value is still the same. 2. When you purchased the coin at our register there is a sign that states all sales are final as we are in a market in which gold and silver prices change all the time. 3. No value was lost in the transaction you conducted. We will purchase either the raw coin or the GSA for $170 as long as they are still in uncirculated condition. Obviously we cannot purchase and sell coins for the same price as that is how a company makes a profit, but as you can see we are not trying to make a large profit from these coins. I hope this can help clarify your experience. If you have further questions I would be willing to take the time to further explain/clarify it. You may have to call to set an appointment as I do work in the three different stores on different days. Allen"
