We will never, ever, take a car to Meineke again. When my husband took his car in for a simple oil-and-lub, he got totally taken to the cleaners. He took it to this place rather than our regular mechanic simply out of convenience since all he needed was an oil-and-lub service.
- 1) He was told that the car needed new spark-plug wires. Since our regular mechanic had recently changed the spark plugs and had not mentioned a problem with the wires, he declined. When we took it to our regular mechanic, he said there was no problem with the wires.
- 2) He was told that the transmission fluid was dirty and was shown dirty fluid. Unfortunately, despite having had this service quite recently, he believed them and paid for a "transmission flush." Our regular mechanic said that there is no way it needed this service again in such a short time. So we are left wondering where that dirty fluid came from and whether the service was actually performed.
- 3) He was told that the rack-and-pinion steering was leaking and that the entire mechanism had to be replaced for $$$ or that the car could lose steering at any time. While it's true that with this car, that replacement is called for in more severe cases, our regular mechanic looked at it, verified that there is a leak but said that 1. the steering mechanism would begin making noise when the rack-and-pinion was close to failure (it doesn't) 2. that replacing it now is unnecessary 3. that the leak can be slowed/stopped with an additive, which he is doing. So, never again.
