During the interview, not once did he mention that the FIRST hailstorm will destroy the entire roof. He never mentioned hail damaging it all. On the contrary when I asked how long it would last he stated "a lifetime! You'll just need a simple re-coat every 10 years."
He insisted on a deposit up-front and began work a few weeks later.
After a long wait, and begging him to come out and start the project during the expensive summer heat, he parked his huge truck in our front yard. It stayed there a week - advertising his company, but no workmen. Our HOA does not allow that, so we asked him when will he start? He finally had to move the truck to "use for another job" and then came back a few weeks later. Horrible wait, but he had our money and made sure we signed the contract-we were legally bound.
Long story short, we paid $10,000 for the roof and when the hail damaged it on the first storm, he told us to call our insurance to file a claim. One storm and already we file a claim?! He also wanted to be present because he said he could "get them to pay more and I won't even charge you your deductible.. just watch." Well, that already sounded fishy and I told my insurance company when I called what he told us. I explained up-front his intent. We scheduled the date and then on the day he said he had to reschedule (can he ever show up on time?!) and he wants us to reschedule with the insurance. We did not reschedule. They came out and saw the shotty lower level work and offered $8,000 to fix it. They brought a roofer with them who guaranteed his foam cover would be stronger through the hail storms since it's a good coat.
We've had several contractors, and our insurance (which should NOT be involved since this was a faulty install) come and look at the roof. The upper portion, which seems to have been coated properly, does not have damage - it is equally open to the elements, contrary to Mr. Underhill's claims that "it's protected by trees" it is not. However, the lower portion where he skimped on materials has severe damage. When he was asked why it was already damaged on the 1st small hailstorm, he replied, "I underbid this project." So I guess he makes up for it by scamming insurance companies and homeowners once the first hail storm hits. Had he of told me, "hail will destroy this roof", I never ever would have had it installed.
The insurance quoted $8,000 to fix it - that's what they'll pay HIM. Well, that wasn't enough for him. He said he could "get more" out of them. After much prompting he finally sent us a bid for repairs.. $19,000. He's all about the money and not quality, it's very obvious now.
EDIT: After seeing my negative review, the warranty holder corporation who guarantees the warranties on roofs done by Amerus, contacted me and said they would like to see the roof. He offered to come look at my roof and take a sample; stating it?s possible the materials were factory defective. Luckily, yes, they were and my brand new roof with hail damage was repaired without the need of my insurance company. So although I would not give a gleaming review, I will say that the warranty company did repair my brand new foam roof promptly on behalf of Amerus.
