About us

Our philosophy at Smith Veterinary Hospital has always been to offer the best quality of care to our clients and their pets. Smith Veterinary Hospital has been providing professional animal care to Santa Fe area pets on a walk-in basis since 1946. We currently have 17 veterinarians on staff and 65 total employees. Our veterinarians treat dogs, cats, and exotic animals with a broad range of services including preventative care, radiography, surgeries, dentals, routine check-ups, vaccines, acupuncture, and emergency care. Our after hours Urgent Care is open Mon-Friday 6pm-10pm. Our new Medical Center For Cats gives cats and their owners the comfort of separate dog-free reception and treatment areas to help reduce environmental stresses. This new facility also allows us to offer cat owners the convenience of boarding their pets in our individually ventilated "cat condos". We stock heartworm preventatives, flea and tick medications, and shampoos and supplements for pets, along with a wide range of prescription pet foods for the treatment of conditions from kidney disease and allergies to obesity. Smith Veterinary Hospital offers extensive in-house diagnostic capabilities, including digital x-ray, digital dental x-ray, endoscopy, ultrasound, and a full in-house laboratory. If any of our patients require medications to go home, we have a full in-house pharmacy as well.

I am a veterinarian. My boyfriend took our dog in for a physical when I was ill. They missed two large tumors on our dog. When I tried to speak to them twice about this issue, I was treated with a lack of professionalism I’ve yet to see in my profession. They also hung up on me when I asked for our medical records. I am reporting them to the state veterinary board, and I suggest you do the same if victimized by these quacks. Our dog was euthanized someplace else with in two weeks because of his cancer, but not before a healthy bill from Smith’s for their malpractice!

My dog is an established patient here. She recently had puppies and some of her teats look especially swollen. When I was checking her in the lady at the window today me it was an additional $50 on top of the $70 sick charge. When I asked why she didn’t have an answer. I have taken my dog on Sundays before and wasn’t charged an additional $50. I told her they were price gouging because so many vets are backed up because of COVID-19. She shrugged and told me “I just work here I don’t make up the price” which was rude because I already know that. I told her she was the face of the business and would hear my complaint. Even though my dog has gotten good care there before, I will not be back.

I've used many vet services in Santa Fe. After coming to Smith's and finding Dr. Julie Breer, wild horses could not persuade me to go ANYWHERE else or use another vet. Love the competent staff, etc. I've spent thousands of dollars here. It is the BEST Vet Clinic in the world in my not-so-humble opinion !

Brought my puppy in for neutering. I have no complaints about the surgery or the staff. My issue is with the insane amount charged for the procedure. My dog had no complications, did not need to stay overnight or any thing like that. Imagine my surprise when the bill for the procedure was almost 400. Shame on me for not asking what the cost would be before scheduling him. I have 3 dogs. One price gauging is enough. I found another vet.

With a heavy heart I am leaving this vet. The last 3 times I went I got charged / talked into WILDLY unnecessary treatments, left with HUGE bills and official diagnosis of and quot;I don't knowand quot;.
I recently went for a dog who hurt its back and instead of anti-inflammatory medication as is the standard for these breeds with frequent back problems, they ordered labs and and quot;guessedand quot; on a brain infection even though the white blood cell count was NORMAL and my dog had no neck pain.

I can not advise anyone to trust this care by any stretch of the imagination.
They have rotating vets (around 10 - MOST Not up to par) and you get whoever is available which is truly not in the animal's best care.
Horrible diagnostics even with hundreds and hundreds spent per visit.
One of the vets , after a $450 bill and zero diagnosis, gave me a guilt trip about not having more x rays.

I got a second opinion at another clinic and the vet was SHOCKED at the meningitis/brain infection diagnosis. They said to discontinue antibiotics immediately.
An gave a correct diagnosis of trauma induced swelling of spinal nerve.

My puppy had the parvo virus. She had stopped eating and drinking for almost two days. She was diagnosed quickly by the vet who presented a couple of options for treatment. The vet presented a high cost as well as a lower cost option for treatment. We were able to save the puppy without spending a fortune on treatment. Rather than leaving the pup at the clinic for observation and treatment, we opted to take the puppy home, brought her in for three days for IV fluids and antibiotics. A good solution for us in that the puppy survived parvo, our bank account survived parvo, and we now know there's a good place in SF to take her in the future. Smith's Vet has a walk-in option and the hours are extensive including hours on Saturday and Sunday. Recommend.
Response from Smith Veterinary Hospital

This is the best veterinary clinic I've been to in my life. Separating the cat clinics from where dogs and other animals are seen is genius and reduces a great deal of stress. The fact that you can drop by without an appointment is very convenient and they don't make you wait for an extremely. The staff is always friendly and polite. The doctors handle animals extremely well. A feral kitten I adopted had eye problems and the doctors at Smith's were able to diagnose and treat the problem when several other vets could not.

After an issue with another vet, we took LeighLou to Smith Vet where they were waiting for us to arrive. The doctor took LeighLou in immediately for an evaluation. We waited for about five minutes when the doctor came out and said that it was clear they were going to have to put Lou under to help her so she didn't do a thorough evaluation of the injuries because she didn't want to stress Lou unnecessarily. We were grateful for that level of consideration. She had an estimate of the cost, though she explained it was a wide range because she wasn't able to examine Lou thoroughly. We told her to do whatever she had to do to take care of Lou because she is a retired Diabetic Alert dog that took care of our daughter for years. The doctor said she'd call us when she was done and that Lou should be ready to go home that evening.
True to her word, the doctor called and things had gone well and the cost was on the low end of the range she'd given. She had to pull two of Lou's canines that were broken along with five other teeth that were damaged. She stitched Lou's gums and her palate and two days later Lou is wagging her tail and insisting on her daily treats.
We will definitely be back to Smith Vet Hospital!

They are wonderful. I've been with them for 15 years. It is a family business. They are very professional and extremely caring. They always seek to try the least expensive thing that is going to present a positive reaction that is safe for the animals. They don't try the most expensive thing first. It is very clean. It is a very modern facility. They remodeled and expanded about 6 years ago. It's lovely.

We initially saw Dr. Kathy Dobesh. She was consumately professional. This is a walk-in clinic with no appointment necessary. We were seen promptly. Our dog was suffering from an intestinal problem and we wanted a growth under her skin we found to be checked out. They biopsied the growth while we waited and it was confirmed cancerous. We discussed our options and decided to scheduled an operation the following week. Dr. Dobesh was very upfront about everything including the cost. The operation went as well as could be expected but unfortuately our dog chewed out her stitches about a week later. We were being treated then by both Dr. Dobesh and Dr. Adria Yaeger. Not wanting to put our dog through another operation we were given the option of just letting the wound heal with bandages but it would prove to be rather drawn out process. This involved many visits over the next month. The vets and staff were very compassionate and our dog sort of resigned herself to being poked and prodded several times per week. Smith was incredibly fair with all these visits. I think they charged us once for an office visit then thereafter only for supplies for probably a dozen more visits. Yes the diagnosis and operation were expensive but I believe fully in line with quality veterinary care. Bottom line our dog is doing fine.

One Yelp reviewer complained that Smith was too expensive. Well, its not cheap, that for sure..but I've never encountered an animal clinic in any city that was. It takes cash flow to provide the type of service you can get an Smith Animal Hospital. I would imagine there could be some sort of payment plan if an animal was suffering and the owner had no money,

On a Saturday my dog became ill very quickly. Smith's was open until 3pm and they took walk-ins. It took a bit of time and several tests to get an idea of what was going on with him. Dr. Chris Anderson was terrific about updating me with each finding and explaining it carefully. He was very thorough and very knowledgeable. Like many vets, you can tell that he loves the animals he treats. He even stayed late to make sure he had covered everything that my dog needed. When Dr. Anderson realized that he needed to be transferred to the emergency vet clinic, he provided me with a copy of all his tests and scans and made the transfer incredibly smooth. Additionally, the techs and the administrative staff were professional and friendly! I have 3 other animals and because of the wonderful treatment my dog received, I will be taking them all there in the future.

I went to Smith's Vet, because they are AAHA accredited. That means there are certain standards of care that they have to meet and that they are reviewed every 3 years. They have a separate entrance and waiting room for cats. They did not require an appt and saw my cat right away. I was pleased with the kindness of the staff and the thoroughness of the vet. Dr.Land explained all the possible problems and what tests were needed to determine the issue. She never proceeded to additional tests until after talking and explaining things to me which I appreciated. My cat had to stay overnight. It was wonderful that Dr.Land called that evening to give me an update on how things were going. My cat now requires weekly treatment so other vets and staff have also treated her and all of them have been very friendly, kind, and professional. I would highly recommend Smith's Veterinary Hospital.

These are the most compassionate yet scientifically advanced vets I have ever experienced in 30 years of going to vets. I have experienced everything with this vet from a new puppy to the death of an old dog. The experience of the dog's death was extraordinary compared to other vets where I have had the same experience.
