La Puerta Originals

La Puerta Originals turns out beautiful custom doors and cabinets. They also manufacture vintage looking wood flooring in a variety of styles. We purchased and installed two custom doors and approximately 1000 sf of wood flooring. The doors were expensive, however we really liked the craftmanship and look of the doors. The flooring was a very different story. First, one of the principals in the company inspected our home and told us that there would be no problem installing his flooring over our existing floor. Based on his representations, we purchased the flooring. Several months later (the delivery was months late), when the contractor recommended by La Puerta showed up to start work, he called us and siad that extensive remediation would be required to the existing floor. Turned into a several month and very expensive remediation. When the floor was finally installed, there were many issues with the quality, fit and finish of the product. The floor was 5 1/4 inch plank and was supposed to be hardwood. The floor that we received was soft wood, many of the boards were warped, the widths varied by up to a quarter of an inch, a significant number of the boards were cupped and the tongue and grooves were not evenly cut across the boards. The staining and finish work was terrible. We attempted to work with La Puerta for over a year to identify acceptable solutions to remediate the worst problems. They were uncooperative at every turn and refused to make any repairs under their so-called warranty. We flew in a renowned flooring expert to inspect the floor.. His professional assessment was that the manufacturing of the floor was shoddy and did not meet minimum industry standards and the installation and finish work looked like it was done by an amateur. He told us point blank that we were "ripped off." After going around with La Puerta for over a year and engaging an attorney to assist with negotiations, we arrived at the point where the only option left was a very expensive and time consuming lawsuit. At this point, we elected to chalk up our losses and move on. Buyer beware with this business. They are overpriced, do not stand behind their work, do not deliver what they promise and treat their customers very poorly.
