Selective Styles in ANYWAY. He is using
the name fraudulently. I contacted the
owner of Selective Styles and they are very very upset at this guy.
Carlos (aka Charlie or Charles) Martinez is not a licensed contractor at all!!
We hired this guy Carlos Martinez (aka Charles, Charlie) to construct a detached
garage on our property. He is a neighbor and he was needing work, so we figured it would be nice to help him out, we
were having it built anyway, so why not help a fellow neighbor out. He said he was a licensed contractor, and had
a crew to help him out. He gave us a written proposal and we accepted it.
All seemed well until the 3 week project started dragging to 7 weeks. About week 4 he had his father in law pass
away and he shared how it was expensive and they were having trouble with the financial
issues of it. So out of the kindness of our hearts we paid him in full so he could bury his father in law in
peace. As far as we knew all was going well, he was a little behind but there had been weather issues around the third
week. We took that and his father in laws passing into consideration.
At week 7 we asked what the holdup was. He stated he was having trouble finding a reliable electrician. The foundation was done, walls erected, wire and base coat for the stucco was up, windows were put in, and some
electrical. We had started constructing cabinets inside and putting up insolation because he said all the inspections had passed
and were good. We gave him a number of a friend we knew might help. After a brief visit by the electrician our friend called us up and alerted us that things did not seem right and the electrical wiring Carlos had put in were not good and a
safety issue. There were also no inspections posted.
We questioned Carlos and he could not produce paperwork, kept saying it was at his house in a folder he had forgotten.
We told him to go get it, he lives 3 blocks away, but he did not. We called the city to ask about our project and inspections, we found out there were no inspections requested, done or on file. He had pulled a permit as the home
owner and he is not the owner. We were told to stop the project immediately!! We did. We told Carlos to leave our property and return some of our money. He will not answer his calls from us, or pick up certified mail we have sent him with demands of reimbursement. We will have to take him to court and see how much money we can get back at this point.
Now we have to finish our garage at an extra expense.
Do not hire this man for anything; I would not trust him to even pull weeds.
He is a liar and has one hard luck story after another and a fast talker, a
real con artist!!
He is a short Hispanic, pudgy man; drives a white Ford F350 pickup, with a double
door utility trailer. He also owns a small white car he sometimes drives to give estimates. Always smiles and very agreeable with you, talks fast and he is never at fault for anything. He will even try and convince you the stories you heard were lies and that is not him.
