I contacted Kurt of Lock and Load Locksmiths to rekey the locks to my new house. He estimated that it would cost about $80. Because I couldn't take off from work the day of the appointment, I asked my mom to be at the house while he was there. Apparently, Kurt told my mom that the original lock was and ldquo;one of the worstand rdquo; types, the deadbolt on my front door was only half the size of a normal deadbolt, and the tumblers inside the lock were too messed up to be rekeyed. So instead of just rekeying the doors, he told my mom that the locks needed to be replaced. Then, because of the location of my house, he convinced my mom that commercial locks (instead of residential locks) would be better. In addition, Kurt ordered a new lock that was round as opposed to an oval shape to match the old style. At no point did Kurt ever call me to discuss any of these changes, so everything was done without my knowledge or consent, and my mom paid him that day (although he didn't give her the Angie's List discount because he said he already gave her a and ldquo;really good dealand rdquo;). When I called Kurt the next day to tell him that I was unhappy with the round locks that were put on instead of an oval shape (the original oval shape left an indentation in the door that was obvious with the new round lock) and that my mom was not authorized to make decisions for me, he was polite but started defending his actions. First, Kurt said that the company (Schlage) didn't make oval locks. When I told him that I had seen some oval Schlage locks at Lowe's the night before, he then explained that Schlage didn't make oval shapes in the commercial locks. He then explained that although my house had an alarm, it was worthless and APD's response time to house alarms was very slow. I told him I still wanted an oval lock on my door, so he said he would stop by Home Depot or Lowe's, pick up the part, and reinstall the new lock. He also said he would call me when he was going to stop by and swap out the locks, but he never did; he simply stopped by the house when my mom was there again. The next day, I called to ask Kurt how much the new bill was (since he switched out commercial locks for residential ones), and he said there was no charge because he just put back my old locks and rekeyed them as I originally requested. Although, ultimately, Kurt didn't charge me to rekey my old locks, his business practices and ethics are very suspect. The fact that I was never consulted about things (either about replacing the locks, using commercial locks instead of residential ones, or about changing from oval to round locks) indicates to me that he was only too eager to up-sell someone (my mom) on products that weren't necessary or approved of by me (the homeowner). In addition, the deadbolt on my original lock was the same size as the commercial locks he installed (not half the size as he told my mom) and he never swapped out my old locks with new ones from Home Depot or Lowe's as he said he would. Furthermore, he still failed to communicate with me even after our conversation, and it was only when I called him for a fourth time that he told me that he had put my old locks back on and that there was no bill.
