"Albert was awesome! I would use him again. It was a very involved remodel which included: Laying Saltillo and Tala Vera tile in the kitchen, dining room, hallways baths and stairs; (The Saltillo and Tala Vera tile laid together were different thicknesses, so that was VERY complicated) Installed Tala Vera kitchen backsplash; Installed a complex heated flooring system under the tile; Installed a circulating system for the hot water; Removed bathroom vanity and replaced with new cabinetry, adding A new pier cabinet on top of the vanity, and new cabinetry over The toilet; Removed master bathtub and replaced with new bathtub; Removed old shower and replaced with new shower and all new Tala Vera tile; Replaced all plumbing fixtures; Painted the entire house; Oversaw carpet installation. Everything was done on budget and on time. It is all just beautiful. Albert was great to work with and I'd use him again. I cannot recommend him highly enough."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Modular homes can go up or down in value depending on a few factors. In areas where real estate is appreciating, the value of modular homes is likely to increase, and vice versa. Additionally, the value of modular homes depends partially on the area. In cities where every other home is stick-built, modular homes might be considered a functional obsolescence, in which case they could be less desirable and go down in value. In either case, though, modular homes can still be a good investment, especially since they provide housing at a lower upfront cost.

Yes, such as using eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient designs for long-term savings.

Modular homes are a type of prefab home. Specifically, manufacturers first build modular homes in sections and then deliver them to the job site. The modules, or sections, are usually at least 70% finished before they arrive on your property.

In comparison, prefab homes arrive in panels or segments, and workers assemble them on-site. Generally speaking, modular homes tend to be more durable, and their consistent construction standards may mean you’ll have an easier time getting conventional home loans.

It is a good idea to check in with your local city and state regulations before committing to building a shipping container home no matter where you live. This concept is pretty new across the country, and many places won’t let you build one.

The International Code Council (ICC) offers guidelines for home builders on the safe use of ISO intermodal shipping containers repurposed as building components, which can be helpful to review when planning or designing a shipping container home.

Renovating or remodeling an existing structure is usually less expensive than the cost to build a new house. That’s because you can save on the costs of new building materials, laying a foundation, framing the entire building, and installing new materials and utilities throughout the house. However, if a home is in very poor condition or is incredibly old, you could spend more on upgrades and restoration compared to building from scratch.
