I agreed that it probably wouldn't be worth fixing and didn't want him to spend more time on it. He then said I owed him $50. I could see him charging something for his time, but I thought $50 for the very short time he looked at it was outrageous. He got really huffy and said that's the standard charge and I should have read the sign. Then I noticed the sign that said estimates were $50 amid a bazillion other signs. Yes, I didn't notice it but he should have mentioned it when I dropped it off so it was both of our faults. But if he didn't do a full estimate, he shouldn't have charged the full amount. I even offered to buy one of his rebuilt saws if he applied the $50 to the cost (because he would have applied the $50 to the repair cost if I'd asked him to fix mine), but by that time he was irritated that that I was questioning his charge and so he refused. It's too bad, he's got a lot of stuff there that he fixes, maybe he does a great job, but I never got to find out and never will. So if you do go, be sure to find out how much things cost for *everything* first.
Description of Work: I brought a chain-saw in to be evaluated. I thought it had a broken connecting rod but I wanted to make sure it wasn't worth fixing. When I dropped it off, he didn't say how much it would cost and I didn't ask. It took him a couple of weeks to get to it (which I thought was a bit much), and when he said he had looked at it, I stopped by. He said he took just a few things apart and said it was "probably the rod" but didn't take it apart far enough to be absolutely sure so he didn't do a full estimate of the cost to repair.
