We were looking to have our entire roof coated with Elastomeric. We had hired another contractor to do the "maintenance" on the roof as part of another job he was doing and he failed to complete the job, which resulted in a roof leak. We hired Santos to fix the leak. He was the roofer who originally put the roof on our new house around 10 years ago. We had no reason to suspect his business practices had changed. After fixing the leak, we discussed with him the possibility of him recoating the roof and he gave us a bid for $6000. We told him that we couldn't afford to do the whole thing right away, so he suggested that he go over the entire roof, fixing the problems left by the previous contractor and then to do the rest in the spring. He wanted $2000 to do that. I thought it high, but, like I said, he had been reliable in the past, and we expected to give the rest of the job to him later, since he promised to give us credit for the work done later, if he finished the job. However, instead of him doing the job, his son, Omar showed up, DBA S & S roofing and did the work. We paid him.
Later, we called both Santos and Omar and asked them if they would cooperate with our attempt to get some of the money back that we had paid the previous contractor, since we had had the roof leak, and he said that he would. We sent him an email outlining the facts that we had discussed on the phone, but he never responded. We tried on several occasions to get a response, talking to his son, his office person, who is Omar's daughter and to Santos himself. They all promised to respond, but never did. They finally stopped answering the phone.
We decided to continue getting other bids to finish the elastomeric recoating of the roof and another roofing contractor pointed out how substandard their work was and how they had failed to put fiberglass around many penetrations.
We tried again to call both Santos of GS roofing and Omar, his son, of S & S roofing and their main office, leaving messages about the fact that they had not done what we contracted for them to do. However, they stopped answering any of their phones when we called.
Be advised that they are doing business as S&S roofing as well as GS roofing.
Lied to temporary employee stating job was finished and took 2nd half of pmt. Job was not finished
Did not do the Job as agreed (Not even close to agreed - I consider what they did as fraud)
Did illegal electric work
No permit for flat roof
Performed framing with unlicensed framer. (I never agreed to any framing)
They claimed in writing and verbally that they were insured - they had no insurance.
I filed a complaint with CID (State of New Mexico Contractors Licensing board) - They found in my favor. Case is now being presented to N.M. State Attorney General. - Case #22; 14-01-22
The company is now in bankruptcy but may be operating under the new name of GSB Roofing Supplies.
I estimate it will now cost approximately $15,000 to correct the errors they created.
