BMG's creativity in dealing with Santa Fe's notorious remodeling challenges is exceptional.  In one apartment, the ceiling had collapsed because a single log had been used for several joist beams, and the log had a knot running through it, resulting in a weakness  down the center of the room.  All of the knot-bearing joists gave at once.  You could see the ceiling bow in the middle.
BMG jacked up the timbers. replaced the broken ones carefully, and then laid new vigas under the joists to strengthen the entire ceiling and give the room architectural character.  This was not an easy task!  Those logs were huge, not collapsibletoilet paper holders that could be compressed and then expanded into the space.  It was tricky work, and when word got out that Bernardo had done this, contractors came by to see the results with their own eyes, and tip their hat to a master.
One Friday, after an especially good week of progress, my husband commented to Bernardo that it is a joy to watch him teaching his sons.  He's a supportive, positive teacher and father.  Showing his boys how to frame a door in a historic adobe structure is one thing, but teaching how to give good value for your services is another.  That's what's truly amazing about Bernardo and the BMG family.  They actually care about the quality of their work and about their customers' satisfaction.  It's more important to them than money. 
To illustrate, Bernardo confided he underbid the project to remove the debris from our property in 2009.  He quoted the job at $400, but was charged $500 by the landfill office when he took the debris there for disposal.  However, since he had not included disposal fee in his estimate, Bernardo took the loss and never said a word about it, even though we worked together for months on the repairs.  It would never have come to light had my husband not commented on the way Bernardo teaches his boys, and if Bernardo had not tried to deflect the praise by confiding how he messed up on that estimate.    (Bernardo's son, Luis, an extraordinary wood worker and potential architect, is in college now, studying construction estimating!)
BMG does fine work with an uncommonly high work ethic.  We call it old-fashioned integrity, but whatever you call it, such honor and honesty are rare these days.  Bernardo and his family are an asset to Santa Fe.   Since 2009, we've done several jobs together, each one a success and a bargain.  BMG will be our contractor for as long as Bernardo and his sons are in business.
