When the plumber finally got here (an hour late!), he told us he had to have a check -- up front -- in order to have enough money to go and BUY the replacement water heater!
A footnote: We tried using TRC Plumbing once more, about a year later. This time, the plumber didn't even show up. Neither did he (or his boss) call us back, or offer any explanation.
