They were awful and I would not recommend them. There was a language barrier, so we could never communicate, then we could never get a hold of the supervisors to know what is going on, and stuff like that. They were good and cleaned up everyday that they came in. They were clean. It would have been helpful if they had been available, returned telephone calls, and emails. They were weak where we were wondering what was going on. There was really poor work that was happening, and a lot of mistakes. We wanted to get a hold of them, and then if they had corrected actions after complaints would have been great. Unfortunately, we ended up firing them. It was bad especially, for the money. They were supposed to get permits, they put wiring 12 inches below the ground, and another electrician said they were supposed to be way down in the ground. They did shoddy work. Their designs were beautiful, but when it came to their work it was bad.

The design was exactly right for us.  The stone work for the gardens, surrounding flagstone pation, and flower garden around the house patio was excellent. That work was done by another contracter. Access to Jerico nursery was probematic.  They showed us lots of plants, but any design would have been an extra fee.  They turned over the placement of plants to Tanya, who apparently had no experience or expertise.  These placements experienced a lot of failure, some smothered others; they did not thrive.  Shrubs along the back fence had an uphill struggle, and, while a couple of them that died were replaced, one has not been.  It remains, brown and ugly, waiting for the replacement promised over and over.  Last year the excuse was that Jerico didn't have any more of these.  This year I've been assured that Leo would be out to replace it.  Not.  The flower gardens are bare or overgrown--very unattractive.
When we had disagreements over additional cost, Eric's behavior was decidely unprofessional.  Calls to both Eric and Tanya have not been been returned.  Granted, the warranty period is over, but some problems occuring during the first year were not corrected and are now being ignored.
Our initial delight with the design and planning have now turned sour. On the basis of follow-up and completion and difficulty to contact I would not recommend them.  Go elsewhere
Response from SmartScapes, LLC
"Respectfully we take significant issue with the appraisal of our services provided. First our stone work is and has always been handled by our in house crew that specializes specifically in flagstone and moss rock. This is the same crew that has worked for us for 5 years. Phoebe knew this and her remarks to the contrary are confusing. Regrettably many of her plantings had trouble taking and had to be replaced. In her specific case plants and shrubs have a 90 day warranty provided by the nursery. Accommodations were made to replace her dead plantings, but after 6 months of replacing her dead plants and determining that shrubs were dying due to customer neglect Phoebe was understandably upset. Although we we advocate for our customers when possible final decision on warranty issues lies in the hands of the nursery."

The work started on schedule and was done professionally.  We particularly appreciated the fact that Smart Scapes provided a professional, computerized design plan for us to consider before the contract is signed without charge.
The job took longer than planned because of several un-anticipated circumstances.  The above-mentioned pond / water feature and the raised rock and concrete planting bed scheduled for demolition turned out to be built of reinforced concrete with foot-deep footers that took much longer to remove than planned.  There was no extra charge for this substantial additional work.  There were also weather delays due to rain, snow, wind and cold weather during the month of February.  Lastly, we made several modifications to the original plan during the job which required delays while we consulted with Tanya and the Crew Foreman.  All of these changes were handled seamlessly and without complaint and to our satisfaction.
All the workers were courteous, professional and were always willing to answer our questions during the course of the work.  They were very willing to help with other un-scheduled tasks such as removing unwanted plants and moving large stones and boulders.  They also added a pipe fitting to allow us to utilize natural gas for our outdoor grill.  The work site was always left as clean as possible at the end of each day...........usually with all rubble removed as much as possible during the demolition phase.
We were very pleased with the outcome and Smart Scapes is currently drawing up plans to renovate our front yard.

The foreman kept close watch on all work as it was done. My only complaint was spotty communication, for example, not letting me know
that the workers wouldn't be at my house on a certain day, or that they didn't work on Fridays. The job also took quite a bit longer than I was initially told. All in all, however, I am very pleased with the results.
My yard is beautiful, appropriate for a desert environment and uses much less water than it did previously. Once the plants and trees get
established and fill out, the yard will look even more amazing and will burst with a variety of colors throughout the year. I am planning to
have additional stone work done on my rock wall and fire pit later this year, and on the patio next year.I am very happy with the final product. I was impatient to get the work finished, and it sometimes seemed that progress was slow, but the yard looks awesome. It also seems much more inviting and usable than it did before this work was done.

"[member name removed] had a uniquely beautiful view and a need to update her yard to take advantage of vistas provided. We expanded her brick hardscape and updated her grass and plantings. [member name removed] was patient and very easy to work with and we appreciate her kind words. As with all projects, we always try to work at the fastest pace possible without ever compromising quality. As is customary with all projects contracted, we try our best to communicate time frames and what to expect in regards to timing and staging of the job site. In [member name removed]'s case she was anxious to have her new yard, but still a delight to work with."

We would never choose to hire SmartScapes, LLC again, and wish we never had. The project started off with promise, but there were numerous errors that occurred in their work, which led to significant complications and delays. It was supposed to be a 6 week project, however it was never completed even after many months of effort on their part and ours to get it done. Also, there was absolutely no quality control of the work; only damage control after numerous errors. While the actual concrete pour of our patio extension was well done, their attempts to stain the concrete failed several times. And while their stucco walls were beautiful, the electrical work (for lighting) was incorrect and poorly done. Corrections had to be made, which marred the beauty of the newly erected walls. In addition, the communication and customer service was poor. We had tremendous difficulty getting in contact with SmartScapes in a timely manner to fix problems created by their staff. In fact, many of our inquiries remain unanswered. Again, we wish we would have never hired them. Overall grade 'F.'

My husband was not happy with the work done on our ponds by SmartScapes, LLC, I thought they were okay. The people were very nice,  and the price was okay. Part of the work was okay but the stone work was not so good.
Response from SmartScapes, LLC
"Respectfully this was a very unique situation in our companies work history. We had contracted with [Member Deleted] to construct a waterfall with pond, and a patio with garden wall. As with all prior and current endeavors we contract with the intent of building the design with materials and methods consistent with the standards we always build to. Immediately after signing with [Name Deleted] we were informed that he had bought all the stone and pond materials online and that he he wanted us to use his materials because he believed he had bought them at a significant discount and he endeavored to save money. We advised [Name Deleted] that the stone he had bought was not consistent with our recommended materials and that ultimately that would impact the look and potentially the stability of the build and that we did not recommend using them nor could we guarantee ultimate satisfaction. Although the end product is not consistent with our typical style we do stand behind the quality, but have learned it is best to never use materials purchased second hand and not intended specifically for the design."

They were really nice and there is another plan for them to put the fisher grass in too but that’s plan number two. They were really good about working with somebody that was limited on funds and wanted pay all cash for it so I didn’t want to go on debt with it so I had so much that I could do for this time and they were real good about working me that way. In terms of price I would rate them highly because I went through about four or five others and it was all very compatible as far as the price’s were but these people really wanted to work with me and it was much their personalities because they were very compatible prices all that I got. They were the first there and the first one I talked to. I have the home owners association and they actually sped all that up because they had worked in that area before so the home owners association automatically just kind of said to go ahead where sometimes I takes six weeks to do and they did within two or three days and that was nice. They were running behind time so they came on Saturday and worked too.

"One of the tenants of our design is to accomplish a synergy between form and function. This is especially important in projects where we are attempting to get the largest amount of bang for the buck. We are very glad that we could make the Rothstein's happy and deliver something they loved for a price that provided great value."

The work is awesome!  No complaints.  We could not be happier.  The re-design incorporates new grass, drip and sprinkler irrigation system, new flower and vegetable gardens, trees and beautiful plants and flowers from Jericho Nursery in Albuquerque (who helped also recommend plant placement), as well as a gorgeous flagstone walkway.  All crews performed outstanding, artistic work.  The flagstone crew hand selected and cut flagstone pieces for a natural feel for the stone walkway.
I am looking forward to asking SmartScapes to update my front yard in the near future.

SmartScapes installed synthetic turf and rock in our backyard and did a beautiful job. I would call them again in a heartbeat for any future landscaping jobs I might need. They were very personable and friendly people and their attitude seemed to spill over into the employees who came to do the job. Overall, we are extremely happy with the job they did. And, last but not least, the synthetic turf looks just like the real thing!!

"We sincerely appreciate the kind words from the [member name removed]. They are one of the kindest and most accommodating couples we had the pleasure to work for. We will always remember and appreciate the drinks that [member name removed ]poured for us to celebrate the completion of the project!"
