"It was a pleasure working for you and your wife, thank you so much for the recommendation."
After delivering the flooring, we agreed on an install date/time. Chuck estimated that the job would take 3-4 days, with the qualifier that they did not know how difficult it would be to remove the old wood floor. I was told the install team would arrive on Monday, between 8:30 - 9:00. Someone (Aaron) finally showed up at 9:45 that day. I showed him the areas that were to be replaced - the entry way and kitchen. He proceeded to tear out the entry way first, which seemed odd to me because that area would be a high traffic area for their work the next few days. After 1 hour, there was only a very small area that had been torn out. Aaron consulted w/Chuck by phone and determined he needed to rent a tool to make the removal easier. So he left. During that time, someone else came to help Aaron. The first day, they left around 3:30 - 4:00 after not a lot of progress. The next day, Aaron showed up around 8:45. The rented tool broke so he left at 3:00. Meanwhile, before all the old floor had been removed, Aaron started to put the new wood flooring in the entry way - the area they were constantly walking through to get to the kitchen. I called Chuck to express my concern & my husband instructed them to wait til the kitchen was done. Before he left that day, I asked Aaron what time he would be at my house the next morning. He said he would try to be there by 8:30. Next morning, he didn't arrive until 9:45. By this time, I had contacted Chuck (the owner) numerous times with my concerns about the job getting completed, the hodge-podge way his team was working, lack of proper tools, etc. By the end of the fourth day, I was told it looked like they were going to run out of the new hardwood floor before the project was finished. I spoke to Chuck about this and he started looking for more. Found out the supplier was all out of that particular flooring. Chuck said he would "stay on it." I started checking on-line and found several places that seemed to have it. There was enough flooring to complete the kitchen, which was done by late Friday afternoon (5 days after they started);however, after Aaron was "finished" the new flooring had adhesive everywhere & even after he mopped, it was still there. I was told it would take "some elbow grease" and few cleanings to get the adhesive off. Not what I wanted to hear. My husband called Chuck & Chuck agreed to come the next morning (a Saturday morning) to clean the floor himself. He showed up as promised. This was his first visit to my house even though I had called numerous times during the week to express my concerns over timeliness, some holes that Aaron made in my walls when removing the old flooring, etc.
After 5 days, my kitchen and entry floor had been removed and the new floor in my kitchen was completed. My entry way was torn up, waiting for new flooring, which I was informed I had to pay for, even though Chuck had been to my home and estimated the amount of flooring needed. Once the new flooring arrived over a week later, I picked it up myself and paid for it. The team was supposed to be at my house on a Monday morning at 8:30 to complete the job. I had a call from Chuck that morning telling me that Aaron had just texted him informing him he had to be in court that day. This was beyond frustrating and I told Chuck this. He said he would "make it right" by giving me $100 worth of cleaning products! Not what I wanted to hear (again). Chuck finally agreed to deduct the cost of the additional flooring plus another $150 for the holes in the wall my husband had to patch. I agreed on this contingent on his workers showing up the next morning and completing the entry way. On Tuesday morning, two people, one of whom I had never seen, showed up saying they would install the hardwood flooring. One was just learning the install process, the other I had never seen, but I was told she was Aaron's wife. When I asked where Aaron was, I was told he would not be coming. Another call to Chuck, this time to tell him we were done with his company. I found someone else to install the flooring and deduced this cost from his final bill.
This was the most frustrating, nerve-wracking home improvement project I have ever experienced. Sure, I ended up paying a little less than the original estimate ($330) but the project took longer, I never knew what time they would show up and how long they would stay any particular day, plus I had the inconvenience of having my entry way torn up for over a week. I had the responsibility to find another installer to complete the job. I am most upset with how a business owner could send such an unprofessional team, expect me to inform him what time they came and went, and take over directing the workers because the owner didn't seem to be very effective at this himself. I was also blamed for the shortage of materials. After all this, Select Floors felt good about taking our money, even though they didn't deliver even adequate customer service. I know this because when Chuck sent us the final invoice (which he was right on top of, by the way), we told him if he felt good taking that amount of money from us, we would send the check. He said that was fine with him.
"We hold our employees and subcontractors to a very high standard, we apologize that this job was not completed on time, nor to our standards. We would like to let you know that we are no longer using this subcontractor, as of this incidence."
"Select Floors would like to apologize that you did not receive the best employee installers. This individual was a subcontractor at the time and is no longer being used. We have since cut back to using a single subcontractor that has completed jobs for our company for over 20 years, in addition to the crews run by Chuck's sons, whose work you mentioned. Thank you for the compliment on their work. We do hope that your floor continues to be successful for you despite installing it cut tight to walls with evaporative cooling, against National Wood Flooring Association recommendations."
