The top management and the work crew for Rhino Roofing were devoted to doing an excellent job. They are very courteous and responsible. Without my saying anything, my neighbors told me how much they were impressed with the work crew and the final result.
While it is true there was hail damage to the roof, the insurance company representative said the date Rhino Roofing used was for a hail storm in Hobbs, not Albuquerque.
I declined to work with Rhino Roofing based on what I read about them online and their pushy sales techniques. I just didn't have a good feeling about the company.
The roofers came to my home in January 2012 around 7:00 A.M. and began the tear off. There were 10 roofers, but by noon there were only 3 left. Our estimate included valley metal, remove and reset the AC unit, and reglaze a skylight. When I inquired about where the skylight replacement was, Rhino's adjuster told us they were unable to do this and that they would just reimburse us. I asked him why they hadn't removed the AC unit and he said they couldn't do that either for the price State Farm allowed. I reminded him that he was told by State Farm that if there were any additional charges to call them prior to beginning the work, and that they had not. He said he would talk to the manager. They finished the job well after dark, and the wind had begun to blow. I was concerned about the temperature and the dust, which could cause the shingles not to stick properly. The next morning when we went out to inspect the roof, we found that they had knocked the facia boards loose and there were nails sticking out of them all the way around the house. They had also stripped a board on one of our dormers. When we looked under the shingles where the valley metal should have been, there was none. When my husband got on the roof, we found that they hadn't sealed the edge on our patio cover. We found that the "L" metal around the fireplace had not been butted up against the chimney and they had left two large areas open where water could get under the shingles and behind the chimney. It snowed that night and when it started to melt, the two skylights in my den leaked, causing sheetrock damage. They also failed to clean up an area in my back yard and I found more than 50 nails in my driveway and grass.
I called them and informed them about these issues and they sent a very rude man to come out and look at the problems. He said he would be back the next day to do the repairs. He didn't show up, so I called them again. He came out and instead of fixing the skylight properly, which would have meant removing the skylights, removing the shingles around them, sealing the skylight flashing with plastic cement, and installing new shingles in plastic cement, he just smeared some roofing tar around them, which has already began to crack. He then hammered the nails in on the facia over my garage and covered it with latex caulking. I had given them an empty paint can with all of the information they would need to match the paint. Not only did they fail to sand the patches, they used water based paint over my oil based paint, and they only painted the patches, so the facia looks like it is spotted. They didn't replace the board they had stripped and just painted over it, again with water based paint. After seeing the mess this man had made, I called and asked that a supervisor meet me at my house to address my concerns. He came by and I pointed out that they had charged me for the skylight and that I had been told we would be reimbursed for it. He said he didn't know who told me that, but they weren't going to reimburse me because they had two other skylights they had to work around, and that really we should owe more. I informed him that his adjuster had told us that, and that he was on the roof with State Farm and my husband where all three of those skylights were clear as daylight and he didn't say a word. He then put a call in to his adjuster to ask him what he had told me. He didn't immediately reach him, but when he called back, I asked that he put his phone on speaker so I could hear what was said. The adjuster said, "Remember, Mrs. Meador, I told you I had spoken to Adam (the supervisor standing with me), and he said we would reimburse you." Having been caught in his lie he said they would reimburse us. Then I pointed out the problems with the facia and the mess they had made. He started to talk down to me and said, my paint was cracking anyway. I told him it wasn't cracking until they knocked the nails out of the boards, which had been done by using their scrapers to knock off the drip edge instead of lifting it straight up, and that they hadn't even tried to repair all of the facia board. When I asked about the board that had been stripped, his response was that it was rotten and that they would cover it with drip edge, which would be impossible since the board has at least a 6" area that is stripped. I informed him that his crew had done this damage and that I wasn't going to settle for anything less than the way it was prior to their roofing job. I asked about the AC unit and the fact that there was no valley metal, both of which were allowed for in the estimate. He told me that they didn't need to remove the AC or put valley metal in because they used ice shield. I knew from working in commercial real estate and dealing with roofing contractors, that ice shield isn't necessary in Albuquerque and that this was simply a way to make more profit. At this point, I told him I was going to call State Farm and talk to them about the problem I was having and asked him to leave.
When I spoke with State Farm, they told me that they had filed an injunction with the state of NM and asked that I file complaints against Rhino as well. They also informed me that Rhino had sent them a bill for additional work and asked me if it had been done. One of the items they had billed for was removal and replacement of an additional skylight. They did not remove any of the skylights, much less replace them. We were home and the skylights are in our den and kitchen. When they remove them, they are open to the outside, and they didn't do this work. I think they did this to try and recoop the money they were going to have to reimburse for the skylight they didn't reglaze. So they fraudulently billed State Farm and I am filing a complaint with our Attorney General. State Farm said that since I had allowed Rhino to come out and attempt to do the repairs and they had made it worse, I could call another roofer to come and give me an estimate. I called two and what they found was even worse than I thought. In addition to the things I stated they didn't do above, both informed me that I had areas where the shingles were overlapped instead of being cut to fit, which was causing buckling. They advised me to contact the shingle manufacturer and have them come out and inspect the roof as the installation may affect the material warranty. They are scheduled to come out. I also have obtained two estimates to repair the facia and the sheetrock. One is $1,000.00 and the other is $800.00. In their final billing they didn't remove any cost for the repairs or for the skylight.
I withheld half of the money and have been informed by both roofers that that won't cover the cost to fix the roof. So in addition to the costs to fix their mess, I will now have attorney's fees and court costs. This has been a very bad experience for us and I strongly advise against anyone using this company.
