That said, there were some problems which are delineated below, as well as Pete's reply to a message I sent yesterday
(1) They repeatedly left messes at our home during the two jobs, the worst being several days in a row when they dumped big buckets of wastewater into the street in front of our house. It made such a mess (white chalky junk) , the neighbors complained to us. Pete's response was to express surprise and claim that usually everyone he works for thinks his crew is very tidy. Hmmm....Guess those folks got different treatment than we did. And, they continued to dump the water into the street again and again AFTER I told him the neighbors had complained.
(2) The self-leveler they poured on the slab in the master bath was slopped into the track for the sliding glass door that leads from the bath to our home gym, and I spent over 2 hours digging it out with a screwdriver. When I told Pete the next time I saw him, he said that I should have said something and they would have cleaned it up. Maybe they would have....maybe they wouldn't have. After all, they slopped it all over in the track, they could SEE that they had, but they just left it.
(3) The seam where the wall and ceiling meet above the shower has repeatedly cracked. They have come back a couple of times times to "fix" it, but it just keeps happening.
(4) The texture on the Sheetrock in the master bath was not well done. They redid the area twice and it's better, but not great.
(5) The bathroom counter and sinks had to be redone because the sinks were installed so poorly. Pete's suggestion was that I buy square sinks (instead of the ovals I had already purchased) because it would be "easier" to install those. I refused. They remade the bathroom counter and installed it. When I got home, I could see something was "off," so I measured it. The sink on the left is set 9.25 inches from the corner of the counter and the sink on the right is set 10 inches from the corner. How's that for precision work? By then, my husband and I were so eager to have project done, that I chose to leave it rather than have the counter and sinks removed again. I think he gave me a small discount - $200 - $300, which wasn't much considering the cost of the job.
(6) At the conclusion of the work in the master bath, I expressed real concern because the shower plate and the handle were very loose - you can literally move them both around. Pete assured me it was just fine. Mold is now growing BEHIND the clear caulk, so obviously water is leaking water behind the wall, just as I feared it would.
(7) The flooring he installed bubbled (I have the same flooring in the kitchen and entryway - installed by Poulin - and it's fine, although they did come out once to work on it, after which it has been perfectly fine). Eventually, the floor got so bad, he had to remove the flooring and install tile. At the time of that repair, the re-install of the toilet was mismanaged and his workers, rather than owning up to the mess they had made or better still - just replacing the parts as they should have - turned the water to the toilet on only part way so we couldn't see it was leaking like a sieve. I had to turn the water off this past weekend and couldn't tell which way to turn it because it was only partially on. I chose wrong and opened it further, rather than turning it off. Imagine my surprise when water came gushing soaking me, the cabinets and the floor.
I contacted Pete yesterday to ask when he could come out and look at the problematic seam, the leaking toilet connection and the shower plate and handle, and I received this reply:
"Your job was done August 2012, warranty expired August 2013. We are not available to provide any further services. thank you Pete"
Wow - a construction warranty that lasts a whole year! Seriously? I strongly urge those who want to remodel their bathrooms to look elsewhere. And I agree 100% with the person who said Plasco is the most expensive place in town. I used to think that was Poulin - who did our kitchen in 2010 and continues to be responsive if we contact them. With Poulin, we got what we paid for. In the case of Plasco, not so much.
I highly recommend Plasco and I will use them again for a future bath remodel. Make sure that you obtain estimates/quotes from their competitors before awarding the contract to them to assure you get the most bang for your money. Chris the estimator was very easy to deal with.
"Our first day on this job was 08/22 to install a shower pan. Then the general contractor had to install sheetrock and get ready for the surround. We installed the surround and vanity top on 09/06, then had to return on 09/11 with a final pc to complete. At that time we were able to measure for the 3/8 frameless glass enclosure, lead time for this is 7 to 10 working days from measure. We installed that on 09/19. We don't know where the expectation of 2 weeks came from, knowing we need almost that much from time of measure and can't measure until the surround is fabricated and installed. Total time on job was from 08/22 thru 09/19, a little less than a month. Glad the customer is pleased but felt the need to clarify the lead time issue"
I will sit down with the contractor (not plasco sales) and go every detail.
"I will address issues in the order (member name removed) brought them up. Yes I was about 10 minutes to the showroom, a prior appointment with a client ran a little long, she and her husband were being helped by our salesperson until I arrived. I took two pages of notes while they were here, including 5 decisions on the shower faucet and 4 changes to that decision. In the shuffle somehow a handheld shower got omitted in the pricing quoted, when they asked for it I checked and saw the mistake and a $220.00 (my actual cost) handheld was provided at no charge, her husband offered to pay for it for she refused. Part of her request was for a no threshold shower pan, but they did not want to cut into the concrete slab to recess the pan as would be required. We all agreed on a custom made shower pan with as little threshold as possible. This was done with the minimum allowable slope of 1/4 inch per 12 inches. The surface is also non-slip so it has texture. It did hold a little water due to surface tension on an irregular surface, but within the standard of 1/8 inch or less. We agreed to attempt to remove some of the texture, then repair the gelcoat and that did solve her issue. This was of course done at no charge. The final product was inspected prior to our leaving and no mention was made of any "debri or footprints" we are very careful when in customers home to leave no trace, but mistakes do happen. Had they been mentioned or even if she had called we would have gone back immediately and corrected. Nothing used in the process that can not be easily wiped up or run down the drain. In our showroom she was shown 2 examples of 3/8 Euro frameless shower enclosure, one with clamps to hold the glass and having a header and one without a header and using channel to secure the glass. The advantages of the channel were discussed and the door was initially designed to use channel and to hinge off the wall, eliminating need for a header. On demolition plumbing venting was found in the wall at the location needed for mounting the door hings, so that was not an option (the door alone weighs 100 lbs). We stopped, called their attention to the situation and all agreed on the header being used and the door to hinge the opposite way. Once installed then she did not like the "look", but we had no other options. We did make an error in fabrication of the custom 3/8 tempered glass with notches, holes, polished edges and polished mitre edges and had to remake 1 of the 3 pcs. Normal lead time from measure to install is 7 to 10 working days, even with the remake we completed from measure to install in 9 working days. The shaving shelf she received was exactly the same as the one she chose in ouf showroom, upon use she decided she wanted it larger, I said it was not problem but as it was not an error she would be charged. Normally the charge would have been the $165.00 she paid for the original, plus a little for the bigger size and then 1 hour labor to remove the original one and install the new one, for a total of $255.00. I agreed to a price of $125.00 to manufacture a new one, larger and remove the original and install the new one and again they agreed. We do not pay to advertise with Angie's list nor yellow pages or any other type of marketing, and have continued to thrive for over 20 years based solely on our reputation and satisfied customers word of mouth. We pride ourselves on happy satisifed customers but unfortunately obviously failed to reach that goal in this case, but know of nothing else to do to change her mind. In the end as she says she has a new bathroom "she can live with" but as a bathroom remodeler I would be proud to have it."
The cultured marble took a week to make, so it's pretty speedy. They were fairly flexible with install times. I had two separate installations--one for just the shower surround, and one weeks later for the vanity top/mirror. They do any extra cutting and measuring on site, which is good.
We highly recommend Plasco for it high quality products and services, professional and capable staff, and keen attention to customer service and satisfaction.
What impressed me the most with Plasco Sales was not that everything went perfectly to plan, as it didn't, but when a problem arose (a special glass coating had not been added), the owner of Plasco Sales discovered the error and immediately called us to explain what the problem was and how it could be remedied. He took responsibility and step up to correct the problem, even though it probably cost him money. He made sure that we were completely satisfied.
I have to admit that I was surprised by the cost of shower doors these days, but I found Plasco's pricing to be very competitive. Further, the owner ensured that we qualified for a promotional rebate from the glass coating company and applied a senior citizen discount.
It is very nice to work with a company that takes responsibility for their work and that you can depend on. For me that is the most important aspect of a company.
