Now it's April 2014 and everything has changed. A fellow from England named James has taken over and it seems that selling parts is more important than fixing the problem. Charging for time spent is more important than diagnosing the problem. We all make mistakes but I don't charge other people for mine.
Since previous visits went well, I tried Nob Hill again. I live 30 miles away and left my car overnight for them to analyze it and put together an estimate. When we spoke the next morning, they had replaced the spark plug wires and coil pack and wanted over $530 total to complete the job. I stopped by to hear it run and speak with the mechanic who also recommended new spark plugs and cam sensor.
I had replaced the spark plugs only 200 miles ago so that was a surprise. $12 for plugs a few weeks before and they wanted $60 for parts and $136 to install them again? I decided that should be last on the list - if all else failed to fix the problem.
When I arrived, It ran no better than when I dropped it off so I asked if I could work on my car in their parking lot. James said OK so I bought and replaced the cam sensor myself which did help. We dug the old coil pack out of the trash and found the new one was defective. After I put the the old coil pack back on myself, it worked just fine and the car ran smoothly as it should. After hours of arguing with James, and being told that since I approved the work, I had to pay for the coil pack. Even if it was defective and didn't help??? Being unable to speak to his superiors, he finally took the coil pack off the bill and I "only" paid $350 for their services, not $530 where we started out.
They recommended a new serpentine belt which I agreed was worn and cracked but I decided to do it myself when I got home. Cost me $46 for a better quality part and took 15 minutes in my driveway to replace it. They wanted $75 for the part and $52 for labor.
Their markup on parts is anywhere from 3 to 5 times their cost. They also now charge a $104 diagnostic fee - even if you go with everything they recommend. Even if parts have a lifetime manufacturer's warranty, you only get the 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty from Nob Hill. I was told that "everyone else in Albuquerque charges the same". I guess being better than the competition is no longer important. What a shame.
Normally you only pay a diagnostic fee if you DON'T have the work done. This fee covers their time to diagnose the problem and prepare an estimate which is reasonable - but only if you take it somewhere else to do the work.
The top of my bill says "The repair shop you can trust" and I remember when I could. Until they once again put customer satisfaction, accurate estimates and fair prices at the top of the priority list, I will not spend another penny at Nob Hill Auto.
On 8/15/13, around 1 pm I had a voice-mail from Dave stating the following: (this message is saved on my phone and computer for any authentication needs)
The diagnosis was a dead/bad starter, there is roughly a $15 difference between a new and rebuilt starter. The estimate for new parts, installed, with labor was going to run $577. I also had asked them for an oil change, with that and the diagnosis fee the grand total after taxes was estimated at $770.
I was absolutely floored! I thought it was a mistake, so I called back and sure enough he Dave quoted me the same numbers. I said thanks but no thanks, asked him to continue with the oil change but not to replace the starter. He seemed equally flabbergasted that I wanted the oil changed on a car that is not starting, and I stated that I can have someone else replace the starter for not $577. As I stated earlier, I have brothers who usually work on my car anyway, and I do have some knowledge about what car repair costs should look like and $577 to replace a starter (which on my car literally has 4 bolts and is EASILY reachable without a lift) is fairly close to highway robbery.
Had my car towed to my home, luckily my family has a AAA membership -- which is always great service -- paid for the oil change and diagnosis fee of $104, which also seemed outrageous.
I bought a new starter at a automotive parts store for around $100, a friend from church literally took 20 minutes to replace the old part-- which I then took back to the parts store and got a $60 core refund for the old starter.
I left both a Facebook message with Nob Hill Automotive and an email through their online/website car maintenance website asking for an explanation with no response -- and I will assume that after 5 months with no response that I will not be receiving one. I am a single mother and was alone when the car was towed and hate to think that Dave and Nob Hill Automotive were trying to take advantage of the situation. This review has also been placed on their Facebook page and a letter to the Better Business Bureau will be drafted and sent this week.
Even though I am not a member of Angie's List I do use references from friends and neighbors that do. Please do contact me for any further information. Thank you.
We are now after another year, getting that original oil leak fixed from a different auto repair shop. It turns out that the working external components that were transferred to the new engine from our original parts on the truck were incorrectly installed by Nob Hill and a leak has persisted. We have already spent another $1500 on labor for a different auto shop to fix leaks on work that Nob Hill did incorrectly and incompetently. Nob Hill did not perform the correct analysis and tests of the transferred parts, so they are still leaking after spending over $5000 for work that wasn't needed in the first place from Nob Hill over a period of more than 9 months. It appeared at times that Vince was trying to do the right thing in customer service and getting to the problem, but even had our engine not failed due to incompetent fixes, there were still numerous delays and unkept promises. Once the re-manufactured engine was in, what was supposed to be a 3 day job turned into over a week job and the original problem persisted.

Our advice--RUN FROM NOB HILL COMPLETE AUTO AND A/C.
I had to remind them about the first-time oil change deal, but everything else was great.
-Read excellent reviews of Nob Hill Auto Care and AC Service on Angies List
-Took 2002 Taurus because air conditioning was cutting out ten to fifteen minutes after initially working
-Owner Alex spoke with me at the front desk.
-Cost for AC service $39.99 plus cost for any freon required
-Waited for the car for two hours
-Alex informed me that, after servicing the air conditioning, it needed two pounds of freon.
-Total cost of the service: $117.95 for the AC Service, Evac and Recharge, Freon, and "miscellaneous shop supplies."
-Left and drove 10 minutes to my home, with the air conditioning working just fine.
Tuesday, June 11
-In the afternoon, took the car out for the first time since the AC service.
-Drove for ten minutes or so and the air conditioning cut out just as it had been doing before I took the car for service.
-Called right away, but they were too busy to take the car that afternoon, so I scheduled it for Wednesday morning at 8:00.
Wednesday, June 12
-Returned with the car
-Advised by Vince, General Manager, that once it a while with AC systems in older cars, it takes more than one visit to solve the problem.
-After waiting for two hours, I was told that there was a leak in a part called the "Receiver/Drier." They would not charge me for the evac and replacement of lost freon, but would charge me for the part and the labor involved. The cost would be $340.
-I asked if they tested the system yesterday why the leak did not show up at that time.
-Called a mechanic in my home state of Pennsylvania who had worked on my car. He told Vince that he thought it was the flap isolating the AC system (Blend Door), and asked them to replace the freon that I had paid for and put the car back together.
Mechanic advised me to take it to the Ford dealership, where they are familiar wit the cause of this problem.
-After the conversation with my mechanic, Vince said that they could not legally replace the freon if there was a leak in the system, so they would only replace it (free of charge) if they did the repair job there.
-Immediately, the estimated cost was reduced from $340 to $270. I reluctantly agreed.
-Waited 2 1/2 more hours.
-Car was presented to me along with the total bill for $294.88.
- To date, I had spent 6 1/2 hours waiting for my car to be repaired, and $412.83.
-Requested to have the old receiver/dryer that had been replaced, and it was given to me.
-Drove the car from the service center, and within fifteen minutes, the air conditioning again shut down.
-Drove directly back to the shop, where it was close to closing time. This time, the head mechanic Lee took over. He looked under the hood and said that, for some reason, the compressor clutch was shutting down.
-He suspected an electrical problem. He said that this was his speciality, and that I should bring the car back in the morning, and that he himself would work on it first thing in the a.m.
Thursday, June 13
-Took the car in and waited and waited. After two and a half more hours, Lee told me that he had replaced a frayed wire and that a 'switch' needed replacement. They were waiting for delivery of this part, which should be coming in 20 to 25 minutes. After that, it would take just about 5 minutes to replace the part, and they would do this at no charge.
Again, I waited. After 45 minutes or so, I asked if the part had arrived, and was told that the wrong part had been delivered, and that they were in the process of trying to find another one. They were not sure how long this would take.
-Left my car and the shop, and went to a friend's house nearby.
-Received a phone call after about 20 minutes that a part was coming from the Ford dealership, and that they would be in touch.
-After another hour hour, I called multiple times for a status report. The line was busy, so I returned to the shop. Lee had the car out for a test drive, and returned shortly thereafter. He said he had driven the car for 6 or 7 times, and the AC was working fine. -I got into the car and sat in the lot for a few minutes to set my GPS for my next destination. As I sat there, the AC again switched off. I called Lee to the car and asked him to feel that hot air that was coming from the AC. His response was "This is s stubborn one, isn't it?" He asked me to bring the car back the next morning. Four days and $412.83 later, the car was still doing the same thing as when I brought it in the first time. I resolved to take it to the Ford dealership the next day, as I had originally wanted to do.
Friday, June 14
Dropped the car at local Ford dealership. By Saturday, they called to say that the Blend Door (flap) needed replacing, exactly as PA mechanic had suggested. They had to order the part. Scheduled the car for Friday, June 21 to have the work done.
Saturday, June 22
Picked up the car. Air conditioner works perfectly.
Monday, June 24
Contacted Nob Hill and spoke with Vince requesting discussion of a fair settlement of their charges to me for inappropriate work on my car. He said he would discuss this with the owner and get back to me.
Wednesday, June 26
Vince called to tell me that they ?had not forgotten about me,? and that he would get back to me by the end of the day or by tomorrow, June 27.
TO DATE, NOTHING. I HAVE BEEN PATIENT AND RESPECTFUL WITH NOB HILL AUTOMOTIVE. I HAVE REPEATEDLY GIVEN THEM THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT, AND THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED IN KIND.
