Mixed. The instructors varied quite a bit in the advice they gave. One required that turns be taken at no more than 7 mph, which is not practicable or safe in real world traffic. Another said that if the student driver were to experience a runaway throttle (full acceleration, as reportedly happened on some Toyotas a few years ago), the correct action would be to turn off the engine with the key and pull the key out of the ignition lock. Since this would lock the steering...ahem... this is obviously not correct advice. The correct procedure is to brake heavily and stop the car -- doing this just once before the brakes fade. Overall, I think the classroom curriculum is designed to scare young men into not driving recklessly -- lots of movies about crash mayhem -- which has different effects for some students, especially young women, who are perhaps more intimidated by driving in the first place and not inclined to drive recklessly. Some students need to build confidence, not be scared into being careful. Finally, some of the instruction takes place in mini-cars such as a Chevrolet Spark. This is absurd. Supposedly they are promoting safety, but put students in the lightest cars on the road?

"Mr. [Member Name Removed], your daughter took our course 4 years ago. Your allegations are very misleading and they need to be addressed for your personal driver safety. 1. You Stated: "One instructor required that turns be taken at no more than 7 mph, which is not practicable or safe in real world traffic." Our Response: In real world traffic, right or left turning speeds depends on the sharpness of the 90 degree turn. Also, road pavement conditions... is it wet, rough, chuck holes, potholes and make, model of vehicle. Turning speeds depends on the vehicle turning radius, road conditions and 90 degree turning radius. Yes, the instructor that day your daughter was making turns stated, "required that turns be taken at no more than 7 mph." That's Ture... because at that particular turn it depends at that moment space and time, speed. Because the next turn she may have to take that turn much Slower than that, depending on the many different vehicle and road conditions. 2. You Stated: "A Runaway Throttle". Our Response: You Sir, are very wrong on your "correct action". The Instructor was correct, but you did not state accurately the sequence of actions that a driver must do. It is as follows; Push the Brake, Put vehicle transmission in Neutral, Let vehicle come to a complete stop. Turn off Ignition Switch, Take Key out of Ignition Switch. Your daughter had Test Questions from the Classroom concerning, A Runaway Vehicle Throttle. 3. You Stated: "I think the classroom curriculum is designed to scare young men into not driving recklessly- lots of movies about crash mayhem." Our Response: All classroom curriculum, handouts and videos movies for all NM Driving Schools must be approved by the NM Traffic Safety Division licensing authority. There are very strict regulations on all aspects of Classroom Curriculum. Your daughter in her 32 hous of classroom had only two (2) videos, 1 was 10min. Long the other 12min. The content of the videos were very Mild at best, as you stated of, "crash mayhem". 4. You Stated: "Finally, some of the instruction takes place in mini-cars such as a Chevrolet Spark. This is absurd. Supposedly they are promoting safety, but put students in the lightest cars on the road?" Our Response: Again, the NM Traffic Safety Division must approve of all NM Driving Schools Vehicles, make, model and year. In our 54 years of our Driving School we have always had 4, 6, and 8 cylinder vehicles, currently 24 fleet vehicles at this time. From large Trucks, SUV's, large, medium and small vehicles. Why? Because family's have all different makes and models of vehicles. From large to small vehicles. When teaching a student to drive, you want them to experience different vehicle handling characteristics. By the way, the Chevrolet Spark is not a "Mini-Cars", its a 4 door small car category. It is the only small car that has the Highest Rating from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). Out of our 24 fleet vehicles we only have 2 Chevy. Sparks. I am responding to your Review of McGinnis Driver Safety Centers myself because, you sir, in all our 54 years of business are a first. Your accusations are wrong and very misleading. Response from McGinnis School Of Driving
"I had spoken to you about this over the phone. Your son is not allowed to take a driving lesson unless they have on their person a New Mexico Learner's Permit. Driving instructors will ask students to present their learner's permit on each and every driving lesson. Which your son had not presented to the instructor's on two (2) separate occasions. Availability for your sons driving hours with us is always available, on the student's online student portal. My staff had noted that he or you had rescheduled a future driving appointment today. I am reasonably sure your son will not forget his learner's permit this time. You're mistaken accusations again had been clearly clarified, stated to you in your sons "blue" Parent Guide Student Notebook, also on our website and many times by me in his 30 hours of classroom instruction. Also, on page 53 is your copy of the consent form. We have in our possession the consent form that you had signed and it addressed all your false accusations, even about driving lessons and the availability thereof. Again, I hope this is all understood. This matter is closed !"

No complaints.  They have been very honest in telling him what he needs to work on.  They have not been as clear as they could be about which licensing rules are different because he is 18 years old and they usually have students who are not yet 18.

The cost seemed reasonable. They were thorough in teaching safety and in paying attention to the road. They did not hurry through the important points of driving. They were flexible if you had a scheduling program.
