Dooley Landscape Designs LLC
About us
My name is Mike Dooley I’m the owner/designer of Dooley Landscape Designs. I first went into business in Texas on April Fool’s Day 1981 with my last sales commission check and an old pick-up truck. In the last 32 years I’ve started and operated retail nurseries in Texas and Rio Rancho. I’m a “Master Certified Nurseryman.” I’m an “Award Winning” landscape designer. We’ve installed over 3,000 residential landscapes in two states. We have an A+ BBB rating and an A rating on Angie’s list. I’ve written a book on landscape design that is available at Amazon.com, Plant World and The Book Worm. My book is titled “Residential Landscape Design for the Horticulturally Hopeless.” I personally do all the consultations and designs. I order all the plants and materials and coordinate the installation. You’ll never be handed down to someone that you didn’t make the deal with. When it comes to replacements, you’ll deal with me throughout that phase also. We are fully insured for your protection. Today my landscape company is just what I set out to make it all those years ago. We’re a hardworking and professional one crew company that’s dedicated to quality work at a reasonable price. The Texan in me still believes in “old school” integrity and honesty. My “word” is my honor.

"[Member Name Removed] initially said that he was going to do the work himself. ( so there was no need for an extra plan) Then [Member Name Removed] said that he wanted a electronic copy "for his own files" even though he had a 24"x 36" plan in full color plan for his use. I suspected that he wanted to put the plan out for bids (which is normal) so I explained to [Member Name Removed] that unless the file can be printed out on a large format printer ( which he does not have) the copy he would give a contractor is useless because when printed on any size other than 24"x 36" the scale is destroyed and the contractor can't use the measurements. [Member Name Removed] is very proud of his software and is convinced that the software that he has will solve the problem but does not understand that you have to the printer to do any good. [Member Name Removed] only needed to do, as others, and tell me how many copies he needed and I would have gladly provided them but [Member Name Removed] wanted an electronic file that he cannot read or print in a size that is usable . Instead of simply accepting printed copies [Member Name Removed] thought it would be more fun to try to do financial harm by giving me a low score. Shame on you for being so hard headed and not just asking for copies. If you choose to remove this insult I will just assume that you were having a bad day. Mike Dooley By the way, he only showed you half of the landscape plan so that it looks like he did not get what he purchased."
"This is true. On the way to the job the foreman quite and I was left to install the job. There was a slight problem that I explained I was willing to fix the same day. The client got very angry and refused to let me change it."
His crew completed the landscaping in less than a week. They kept things orderly while they were here and cleaned up before leaving at the end of the day. Some of the plants in his design weren't available at the time of the landscaping but were planted as soon as they became available. Mike kept in contact with us thru the summer, gave us care advise as we went along, and replaced a handful of plants that failed to thrive. The yard looks great and we look forward to watching the plants grow and fill in over the next few years.
"The client wanted to pick her own tree so I suggested that she go to Plant World and tag the tree she wanted.Instead of tagging one tree she tagged several in an attempt to make a decision. She then tried to removed the extra tags but forgot several. Not knowing that she still had tags on several trees I sent my foreman to pick up the one tree she wanted. Needless to say that caused a big problem. The first tree that had her name on it was planted. It was the wrong tree. Over the courses of three days we repeatedly replaced trees until we realized what she had done. (three different trees were planted as she rejected one after another...at no additional cost) When the last tree was being planted she arrived home only to tell us that the tree being planted was also the wrong tree. At that point my foreman jumped in the trailer and showed her the tag with her signature that he had just removed prior to planting. When politely confronted with her final mistake she went into a rage. She bragged that she had several college degrees and could read very well. Then she crossed the line and belittled my young foreman saying that he must be "stupid" or he would of figured the whole thing out from the beginning. I expected my foreman to receive an apology instead she tried to hurt my business with "D" review. As she said we did everything that we were contracted to do and more!"
"[Member name removed] surprises me. I drew a plan, explained it in detail. She approved the plan and wanted it installed. On the installation day I was present to set out all the plants according to the plan so she could see EXACTLY what she was getting, [member name removed] once again accepted the design. It was installed the same day and she said that she liked it and paid us. Soooo a year and a half goes by and she decides that she is unhappy with the design. Had she spoken up the multiple times I ask for her opinion and approval she would be happy with the design and the problem would have been solved on the spot."
I have to re-visit this review. Do not expect call backs to be pleasant. Some of my plants had not made it through the winter. There was a guarantee on the plants. Mr. Dooley was short about it but sent Sergio out to replace. When Sergio arrived he noticed an area that looked under planted and found another dead plant. When I pulled the set of plans we were missing three plants from the landscape that I had paid for. Sergio advised me to call Mr. Dooley to replace them. When I called he was very upset with me for not telling him before Sergio got there. I apologized. He then hissed at me that it would be the last time he came. I then e-mailed and apologized for angering him and said to forget it if it was too much trouble. He e-mailed back and said of course he would replace the plants. In the next e-mail he said Sergio would be here on Friday. Well, I've been waiting for around 4 weeks for that to happen. I think he took the it's too much trouble route.
Another re-visit. After posting the earlier review Mike Dooley contacted me and apologized and took full responsibility. As this is his busy season, somehow I fell through the cracks. By that afternoon all my plants were in the ground. My faith has been restored.
Mike's crew was professional during the installation. They made a few mistakes and communication was not always 100% -- for example, the crew nearly installed the drip to the ocatillo, which we'd discussed would die if put on the drip. One other small issue was that Mike forgot some of the changes we discussed -- he tended to forget whatever changes were made after the original plan was drafted, if those changes were not written down. I do understand this completely, as my memory is no better than his! We easily worked out these issues, and he was amenable to the changes we agreed upon, even when he never fully remembered what we'd discussed. So in summary, I recommend staying nearby during installation days and making sure that all plants go where agreed upon and that the details are taken care of, and also taking notes on any updates and changes.
Also, a couple of the plants died during the first year, and Mike did not hesitate to replace them free of charge - including the re-installation.
Finally, the company he sub-contracted with was equally professional. The drip system works great. I had a few minor issues with the drip system post-installation, and they came out within 48 hours to take care of the problems.
Overall, a great experience, and I would not hesitate to use Mike's company again.
My yard was transformed from ugly and uninviting. I am so happy with my new front lawn and so are my neighbors!
I will recommend Dooley Landscape Design, LLC to all my friends and family.
"This is a shocking review when you consider that the contract that they signed has a special note saying "does not include overlaying the existing Plum (gravel) area." Further more, just to keep them happy, I dramatically reduced the price on doing the area in question to my COST and they agreed. We "shook on it" with everyone happy with the deal. Following completion both clients went out of there way to tell me how much they liked the job and offered the crew the largest "tip" they have ever received amounting to several hundred dollars! If the client is that impressed with the work but has to rate me a B over a small issue that we resolved, then I can't imaging a situation where they would give a A rating. This kind of review makes the " honest and hard working contractors" wonder why they give clients a negociated price, just to get along" if this is the result. "No good deed goes unpunished." A " B rating" is an insult. Mike Dooley"
