All non-warranty items are charged a diagnosis fee but that is applied towards the cost of repair. Many companies offer "free" estimates, but it doesn't always mean you will have a qualified technician doing a full diagnosis rather an educated guess on what might be wrong. "Our customers are told before a unit is dropped off that a minimum fee ($60 for a large LCD TV) is charged up front for the diagnosis regardless of what we find, even if there is nothing wrong with the TV. The problem he listed was that he could not change channels with the remote control. The TV needed to be autoprogrammed.
