From the first conversation until the end of the project, everyone at Chavez Concrete was professional, courteous and timely. Every step of the process was handled with care and the work site was always cleaned up before the workers left. The finished concrete work is smooth and perfect! If I could give them an A+ I would.
We had Chavez Concrete pour our driveway and sidewalk when we built our house in 2002 and they had done an excellent job. They continue to do exemplary work!
Wriley Burnett, their estimator, was exactly on time and very presentably dressed. Both of these things are truly and exception here in New Mexico.
The cost was very reasonable, considering the amount of time, effort and skill it required to do this job right. I have done some smaller concrete jobs in the past and I would have willing paid more not to have to do this one, knowing from expierence what this job entailed.
So, for anyone who needs concrete work done and done right, these are the people I would go to, even if they had the higher price!
Regards, Pete and Susie
As an aside, I should probably mention that we were unsure about whether to have them also replace the sidewalk leading from the front to the back of our house. The previous owner had laid both that and the backyard patio himself, but for some reason had chosen to use two-by-fours as spacers in the expansion joints. It appeared to be pre-treated lumber, but after 30+ years of sun even that had deteriorated. Now they were warped, representing a tripping hazard, and allowing weeds to grow in the joints as well. Wriley gave us the name and number of a member of his crew who does work on the side, and who he thought might be able to replace just the spacers with some caulking material, as the concrete was still in fine shape. He then gave us two estimates: one for completely replacing the patio and sidewalk together, and a separate one for doing just the patio. The option we chose was to hire his crew member to remove and replace just the spacers in the sidewalk for several hundred dollars, and to have Chavez replace just the patio.
They already had a two- to three-week backlog of jobs lined up when we made our decision, so it was mid-July before work got underway. There were actually two crews: one that broke up and removed the old patio, and a second crew that poured the new one. The demolition crew arrived on time on July 14, 2014, and got right to work. One complication was our existing patio cover, for which the support pillars were firmly anchored in the old patio's concrete. The crew very carefully sawed around the supports without damaging them. Their work was slowed somewhat by the fact that there was not enough space on either side of our home for a Bobcat-style loader to get to the backyard, so all the concrete had to be hauled out by wheelbarrow. Nevertheless, they got it all out, and the forms for the new patio in place, all in one day's work. And they did an excellent job of cleaning up afterwards.
The original plan was to pour the new patio the following day. But the forecast was for rain, so Wriley called early the next morning and said he thought it was advisable that we wait a day, and we agreed. The same thing happened the next day, and again we agreed to postpone the pour. Finally, on July 17, 2014 the weather cleared, and the pour went through without a hitch. As much as we wanted the job over with, it was more important that it be done right, than be done in haste, only to be damaged by rain. So we welcomed Wriley's caution regarding the weather. The mixing truck parked at the curb, and two or three men with wheelbarrows wheeled load after load of wet concrete to the backyard, taking great care to minimize any damage to our lawn. Others would spread and smooth it. Everyone really hustled!
The crew very carefully covered the old support pillar footings with the new concrete so everything matched, and pitched the new surface away from the house so any rain would drain off. A few minor last-minute snafus with a drainpipe near the base of the house, and our sprinkler system, were handled expeditiously as well. This second crew also cleaned up after themselves very well. We've now had it for about six months, and are very pleased with the results. It drains rainwater very well, and one would never know that the patio cover had been installed several years before the present patio. The repairs to the sidewalk expansion joints appear to be holding up as well. Wriley stopped by with a few workmen the day after the job was done to remove the wooden forms and see if we were satisfied. We were, and paid him the full amount then. The company seems honest, does high quality work, shows up when they say they will, and leave with nary a clue they were ever there. We would recommend Chavez Concrete to others without hesitation.
The pouring was done during a rare spot of New Mexico weather. Rather than pouring and be damned, they covered up and left. They also did a great job of cleaning up and even raked the yard.
They were easy to work with.
Nothing was damaged and the site was left neat and cleaned up. The new sidewalk and porch look extremely good. The price was very reasonable.
We negotiated a start date, but neglected to get the overall project work time. The estimator had indicated that two or three days would suffice. The total for the new pour was about 1800 square feet.
The demo and removal crew showed up early on the day of the appointment and within about 4 hours had demolished the old concrete, loaded it into the dump trucks and completed the forms for the new pour. The company called for an inspection which took two days while we waited wondering what was holding things up. This communication could have been handled better by the company I think. Chavez does mostly commercial business so they may not be quite attuned to the homeowner's lack of general knowledge of the process.
On the day of the concrete delivery the two crews showed up at 7am and by 7:15 the first truck was empty and they second truck arrived. The sidewalk along the garage was done first and the pour progressed from the garage to the street. Lots of guys working very quickly and obviously knowing what they were doing got the main drive done under two hours and then we had to wait for the special concrete mixture for the pad. All told, the initial pour took about 3 hours. the mix was floated and sectioned by mid day and the crew came back three days later to remove the forms and clean up the area.
