Overall working with Cardinal Construction was a positive experience. The job did take longer than anticipated but Ted was very professional and worked well with us. The window installation went well but the interior finish work caused a few issues. Again, Ted was able to solve the issues and work proceeded smoothly. The entire team worked hard to make sure we were satisfied with the job they were doing. When the work was completed and a final inspection was done, we noticed a scratch on one of the windows. Ted did not hesitate and ordered a new window immediately. The replacement arrived in a timely manner and the window was replaced quickly and efficiently. We would work with this company again.
.- The Integrity sliding doors are beautiful and have continued to work smoothly for years. I got fiberglass outside with wood inside, and had Cardinal stain and finish the inside to match my existing trim. They took extra care to ensure that the door transition to my deck and hardwood floor was square and tight.
- The windows all fit the opening perfectly, and make a HUGE difference in terms of summer cooling and sound attenuation. In the kitchen Cardinal had to cut a tile sill to make room for the new windows, and they did it without damaging the tiles and ended up with a perfectly square, clean line against the windows.
- The deck work involved repairing a hole from a removed hot tub, and they took care to align the new boards with the old, adjusting the gaps as they went to make things look seamless.
Because they are general contractors, I believe their attention to detail and understanding of the proper way to install windows and doors is superior to the big-box and big-brand hired help. You may pay slightly more for install, but in my experience it is worth every penny. My only criticism is that they often scheduled my installs only a day ot two in advance, so you may need to be extra clear upfront if arranging a specific install date/time is important to you. In the end, that was a minor issue compared to the excellent craftsmanship and service.
Ordering went very smoothly with Josh and Tanna. They were very helpful with providing info on the two window products they install, Marvin and Simonton. Since my requirements were for narrow frames due to bullnose inside and out, Energy Star rated Simonton Impressions 7300 series vinyl fit perfectly. The windows arrived on time and in perfect condition. Ted, Josh and their helper arrived with all needed supplies to install and clean up the area. They did a great job. There were no noticeable issues and everything was done within a day and a half. What a difference quality windows make in our home! No more drafts and heat transfer. Not to mention safer sliding doors! Josh even added extra foot bolts for added security at no charge. I plan to order the remaining windows for our home in the near future and will definitely use Cardinal Construction. They are family owned and it shows in the care they took from start to finish. I highly recommend giving them a call.
The entire experience went very well and met all our expectations. It started with a call to Cardinal for a quote. Response was very prompt. Josh was our first contact. He came to the house and listened to our project objectives, made measurements, reviewed the Marvin product line with us,and made suggestions. A particular concern of ours was how to treat the mullion space between individual windows, i.e. whether to use metal cladding or to stucco the space between windows. We chose to stucco.
Within a few days following the initial visit, Josh provided an initial quote by email which is our preferred communication medium. We communicated questions by email and Josh responded within a day of each communication. Upon indicating that we wanted to go forward with the job, Josh and Ted Bennett, the owner, came to the house to make final measurements, window model and glazing selections, and exterior frame color selection. Job schedule was discussed and downpayment was provided. Marvin takes about six weeks to manufacture the windows.
Once the windows arrived at Cardinal from Marvin, Josh contacted us to select a stain color for the interior window frame. This was again accomplished by email.
Once the interior window frame were stained, Josh scheduled a installation start date. Cardinal crew and Ted arrived as scheduled and confirmed the work to be accomplished. The job took about one week for window installation. Stucco work took another week mainly for the scratch coat to cure. The job was assigned a foreman who was our main contact, but Ted would visit periodically to insure that the work was going as we expected. The crew was very professional and cleaned up very well at the end of each day. Upon arriving in the morning, the foreman always asked if we had any issues or concerns about the previous day's work.
Cardinal worked with us to match the color of our existing stucco and the match was almost perfect. We were not entirely pleased with the texture of the final stucco color coat so Ted had that redone by another stucco subcontractor to our satisfaction.
Bottom line is that we are extremely pleased with the quality of the windows and their installation and I highly recommend Cardinal Construction for window replacement. They are very customer focused and were sincerely interested in making sure we were satisfied. Communication was excellent throughout the entire process.
Ted even added additional value by installing our window blinds for us after he recommended a vendor who would resize the blinds to fit the new windows. He took the initiative to contact the shade vendor and deliver our blinds for resizing. We paid for cost of resizing, of course, but the installation of the blinds was not in the job description and this saved us at least $150.00.
Our house was built with Marvin windows. Marvin makes a great product. Last January we visited Cardinal Construction about having the patio door in our bedroom replaced with a Marvin one, since they are listed on the Marvin website as their Albuquerque representative. The gentleman came out to our house, took measurements and told me that the door we had was smaller than a standard one, but they could replace it with a standard size if the concrete step on the exterior was removed and repoured to a lower height. He went back to his office and emailed me two proposals, one for a door supposedly the same height as the one we had and another for a supposedly larger full-size door. He said the standard height would cost more because of the expense of rebuilding the concrete step. We agreed on the standard size door. He said the owner would come out, verify that the measurements were correct, take the 50% down that was required to order the door and have me sign a contract. All that happened 2 days later. Then months went by waiting for the door to be built by Marvin.
When the workmen finally arrived to install it, it turned out the wrong door had been ordered, though no one seemed to notice or care until I measured it and forced the issue. To complicate matters, the measurements that the salesperson had taken and the owner had verified appeared to be wrong, meaning even if the door we had signed off on had been ordered it would not have fit as represented. Surprisingly no one at Cardinal seemed to notice their mistakes. To compound the situation, the door we had was actually a standard size door after all, which neither the salesman nor the owner seemed to recognize. As a result, the workmen needlessly torn out the concrete step, damaging the concrete pad in 2 places. Because the pad is colored concrete with an special exposed aggregate surface, it could not be fixed without re-pouring all our backyard landscaping, which is not feasible.
But none of this is why I say this is the most horrible experience I have ever had with a business, bar none. Everybody screws up. It's just part of life. It's how you handle your mistakes that says who you are. Not once did anyone at Cardinal ever admit that they had done anything wrong--not once, ever, even when it was painfully obvious that they had made one mistake after another!! When people own their mistakes, not only do they take responsibility to fix them, they make a lot fewer.
In the end they walked away from the job, leaving me with the damage to my house. I didn't have to hire a lawyer because I am one, but this didn't end until I sent them a letter on my letterhead. That's something I've never had to do before and did this time only as a last resort.
But my story does have a happy ending. I purchased my Marvin door from SolarGlass Window & Door (505-988-2001) in Santa Fe, who delivered it to my door, and Marshall's Carpentry (505-717-1400) installed it. If you're looking for professionals, these two are.
UPDATE:
This is an update following the Provider's Response. I believe the response gives a false impression that I would like to clarify. First, Cardinal Construction unilaterally and out-of-the blue sent me a check by certified mail equal to the money I had paid them, with the words "paid in full!" hand-written on the bottom, knowing at the time that the concrete step on the exterior had been demolished by them and needed to be rebuilt. Moreover when they left the jobsite, there was considerable damage to the interior wall of our bedroom and damage to the walkway outside, none of which they seemed interested in paying for. In fact, this matter was not resolved until I sent a demand letter on my legal letterhead, with photos of the damage and the repairs, stating that I would sue them if they did not pay my damages.
This is only my opinion, but I believe the underlying problem with Cardinal Construction is, as their website says, it's a " family owned business." That conjures up images of the Brady Bunch selling lemonade on the front lawn, but in the business world it's called nepotism. While there are many great family owned businesses--in fact most are--there can be problems when a family member is either incompetent or doing a poor job. It's easy to fire a worker who isn't up to snuff, and most businesses will quickly acknowledge and address problems caused by an employee that doesn't represent their standards. We've all been there. Most businesses care much more about their relationship with you than protecting an unqualified employee. But when that employee is your child or your spouse things can be different. If you read the Provider’s Response, it’s clear they really believe they did nothing wrong. How can that possibly be?
"We strive to provide excellent customer service and quality products with professional installations. We maintain an A+ rating with the BBB as well as many good reviews of our work here on Angie's List. Regrettably this customer was not satisfied with either the work we were in the process of performing for him, nor any of the resolutions we sought with him prior to him ordering the door from another company. We do our very best to avoid this type of situation, but unfortunately this time we were simply unable to work with the customer in a way that found a better outcome. The customer was refunded in full for his entire deposit amount, as well as compensated for the difference in cost of the door we ordered, and the custom size door he ordered from another company to fit the opening more to his liking. Cardinal Construction and its employees continue to work hard at maintaining high customer satisfaction ratings by providing the best products and professional installation and remodeling services."
They were also helpful in getting a manufacturer's rebate.
