discussing projects with him. We hired him for 2 projects, replacing a small
deck/landing and installing a pre-fab outside shower and cement base. Two fairly simple projects. This review is for the deck replacement.
Overall the deck Kevin built was sturdy and solid but his
workmanship and finish work left a little to be desired. He finished the steps differently than we
anticipated, but was acceptable until we looked a little closer. The lower railing posts were not squarely on
the bottom step and looked awkward overhanging the side of the tread. Also, the bottom stair tread had the "bad
edge" facing out. I always thought
a good carpenter would always present the best side/edge of the material being
used.
We contacted Kevin several time to come and inspect/correct
the issues noted above. Kevin stated he
did not feel he needed to fix anything, but would come out and take a look when
he was not so busy. We never heard from
Kevin again. The work was done in August
of 2015. After two months we decided to
have another contractor re-do all 4 steps in a "picture frame
fashion". This allowed for the
bottom railing post to sit squarely on the tread, with trim work around the
bottom, consistent with the trim on the railing upper posts.
We actually hired the "other" contractor to
enlarge and replace our front porch. He
does excellent work. If you're looking
for a contractor in Cape May County, contact me and I'll provide his
information. Overall the work Kevin did
may be acceptable to some, but If I wanted it to look like an amateur did the
work, I would have done the project myself.
We hired Kevin for a professional looking job and did not get what we
paid for. Plus, the fact that he blew
off our concerns speaks to his unprofessionalism.
I'm sure Kevin will rebut that we are being picky, but a
good businessman/professional knows the two basic rules of business; Rule one,
the customer is always right; Rule two, when the customer is wrong, see rule
one.
We would call Kevin again he does do great work but not since he started charging the $100.00.
We felt since we have done business with him before many time this was not right.
Kevin does great work and he is trustworthy.
He would do a great job for you.
"in response to the $ 100 charge, it is not a separate charge from contract total, it is a small deposit with signed contract to get on calendar. All contracts that are negotiated and signed include a small deposit usually of $ 100.00. All contracts have start and end dates, and if there is a change to that a written change order is signed by both parties showing the change. Even though this customer gave me a good review, I apologize for the mis understandings that occurred."
