Initially calling up K&J and getting a quote was very easy. Matt came out to our house twice, the first time for an estimate of a 4ft scalloped fence, then we changed our mind and he came out again to give us a quote for a 6ft privacy fence all the way around our property. The quote was fair and we were able to schedule our installation only a couple weeks out.
We applied for our permit and the permit office mentioned that we were over shooting our property by 3 feet and that we would need to make sure everything stayed in the property line. No problem, that's totally normal. I called the K&J office to try and get a hold of Matt to make note of the changes in the amount of fencing required and no one ever called me back. I understand that only a couple of feet isn't really going to make a difference in price, and we had already signed a contract, but the principal of the matter is that no one called back. Two people in the K&J office mentioned that Matt would call back and he didn't.
The day of the installation was great. Both Mike and Bill and the team did a wonderful job removing the old fence and installing the new one. The materials were dropped off around 8:30AM, the crew showed up at 9:30, and they were completely done with just over 300 ft of fencing by 3pm. They were very efficient and hard working, and I would recommend K&J solely for the fact that their install crew was great.
Communication was lacking between ourselves and the sales office, but the job is done and we are happy with the result.
Fence was installed November 2013. The work his company did is under warranty for one year per our contract. Last month I had noticed one of the panels on the back wall of the fence didn?t appear straight and confirmed my findings with a level. The gate was also not closing unless the door was physically lifted up or I went outside my property and pushed on the door. I contacted K&J Fence via email and sent a picture of the panel and explained both issues. I made a phone call after sending my email and spoke with Kevin who indicated he needed more pictures. Although I explained it was difficult to photograph a gate not closing I took several pictures of the gate and sent them. I was unable to reach him again despite a few follow up calls.
I made a call today to inquire about scheduling a day in order to have the installation corrected. It was really that simplistic. He informed me that he does not schedule appointment(s) and for me to leave my property unlocked for the workers? arrival which would be unannounced, at any time in approximately the next two weeks. When asked if I could get a call the day prior at least I was told that wasn?t guaranteed since he didn?t know when his employees would be coming out.
In summary, my interactions with the owner of the company have been absurd and unacceptable:
- He refused to address/schedule an appointment
- He told me to leave my property unsafe
- If I did not meet his requirements, he didn?t care and would not return to fix the issues
- He told me he didn?t want me to keep calling and so wouldn?t tell me when they were coming to do the repairs
- He told me if the gate was locked upon the arrival of his workers a note would be made and he would not be rescheduling or coming back a second time
- He hung up on me twice
- He was belligerent and foul mouthed; even telling me to go ?F-off?(actual curse words spoken)
Taking all of this into account, I do not trust a company like this on my property nor do I trust that reputable work will be performed hereafter. I refuse to waste any more time dealing with K&J Fence --doing so would be foolish. Moving forward, I am reaching out to a Professional to do the repairs.
They were able to give us a good install date and they arrived on time. The men doing the installation were very hard workers, pleasant and professional. They did a very quality job of installing the fence.
As it turned out, we did not have the entire backyard fenced for reasons of a fence on the neighbors yard. After a week, we decided we needed to have the additional fencing installed, and they were able to come out very quickly and give us the additional price and scheduled the job only a few days away. The installation of the additional fencing was done quickly and professionally. I would recommend K and J Fencing to anyone.
In addition, I had spoken with the woman in the office on two occasions, and she also was very helpful and pleasant.
I am so disgusted more and more about companies that in this economy are not giving superior customer service. Do they even want to stay in business? They are rude, unprofessional and I would never recommend them to anyone. They need to get their act together and learn to be courteous and return phone calls.
Shame on K & J
"I am very sorry to hear you had such a bad experience, I do want to mention however that I came out twice, the first time there was no one at the home and I could not get any answer from the phone number I had. Second I did inform you, and your mother (whom I ended up meeting with as you could not be there) that due to the high amount of tree stumps along the property line where you wanted the fence we could not perform the job unless they were completely removed and I would not be able to provide a quote until that happened. If at any point those stumps are removed I would be happy to provide a quote."
As for the actual install. My yard had to be flagged out for the utilities. The utilities guy actually came to my door and told me the individual he talked to on the phone at K&J had a major attitude problem. He could not find my house on the GPS so he called K&J to get my location and whomever answered over there, told the utilities guy that it was his job to find the address and not K&J's responsibility. The point being, he could have delayed my install because apparently the inspector didn't have to go out of his way to find my house.
The day of the install went smooth with minor discrepancies. When they showed up there was a young man in charge. He asked if I had the permit. I was assured by Kevin McConnell that they would secure a permit and I did not have to worry about anything. Just in-case, I had went to the city and inquired if I needed a permit and I did not. He seemed to give me some gripe about securing a permit and it was not his job. Either way I told him we didn't need one for the township. I remember asking if they minded if I watched because I enjoy seeing how things are done. The young man in charge said that it was fine just not to get in their way. He came off rather rude. So I let them be. They got the fence done very quickly. I asked them to lower it more towards the ground so my Daschund did not dig under it and get out. This man's reply was "I know you are the customer, but it's my name on the fence and it needs to look good and level" I had no more patience for these types of comments so I told him "That's right, I am the customer, so put the fence on the ground so my dog won't dig under it" He didn't reply he just did as I asked and guess what? The fence still looked even and incredible.
A section of my fence blew over during a storm shortly after the install and half my post caps disappeared in the wind. They fixed the fence and put new caps on in a timely manner. I'm not sure which crew did that but a day or two later the young man who did my install came by asking about the fence being blown over. I told him it was fixed. He seemed miserable and with an attitude like I accused him of installed the fence wrong. All was settled.
Over all the end product looks great. However, this young man definitely needs to stay away from the customers or the phones. I wish I remembered his name. Very unprofessional and it makes the rest of the company look bad. I did recommend them to a friend and told them of my problems. My friend had them install a fence and had the same issues I just explained.
Mike, the foreman, called a half hour before arrival and showed up on time. We reviewed everything and he was very helpful and kind. It was nice working with a professional team and having a positive feeling of working together. The job was completed same day within a few hours, about 140ft of chain link fence and while there was one hiccup it was quickly resolved to everyone's satisfaction (especially ours).
I would highly recommend this company for fencing. Everything was straightforward and as agreed upon.
The second incident was in September 2012 after a Jeep drove thru our fence and 4 other neighbors' before crashing into a tree. No casualties, thank goodness, but our whole back and one side panel was gone. A guy come out to estimate the cost and took samples of the fence to match up the colors. Our insurance covered it fully this time, and they came out on time just like before. Only took 2 1/2 hours.
I will say, they didn't call to confirm the appointment with this recent job (I can't remember about the first one), but the quality is top notch (two different adjusters confirmed this). Wouldn't hesitate again to use them when our next disaster strikes.
"Thank you so much for the kind review. It was a pleasure working with you."
The owner, Kevin, arrived at my house almost 2 hours earlier than he was supposed to which seemed odd and was a slight inconvenience, but I stopped what I was working on to accommodate his early arrival. He asked me if I had a survey of the house so he could be sure he was measuring correctly. I knew I was going to need the survey, and had pulled it out the previous week , but I could not find it. Kevin was very patient as I had to search for it and finally call my wife (she had put it away in a different place).
After reviewing the survey, and walking around the property, Kevin put together an estimate. He also showed me the quality of fencing K&J Fencing uses, and I was impressed. You could see the quality was much better than the "standard" vinyl fencing used by other companies. He was very thorough and complete, showing me awards his grandfather had won, establishing they had been in business for 3 generations. While he was showing me all of this, I got a really good feeling about him and his business, although when he gave me the estimate, it didn't have a price on it. He had given me an oral estimate, but said he liked my location (I'm on a fairly busy side street) and he would take that into consideration when giving me the final price when he called me the next day. I assumed he wanted to hear what other estimates I received, even though I had not told him I was getting other estimates at this point.
As he pulled out of the driveway and was heading down the street, I realized he didn't return my survey. I needed this as I had 2 more estimates scheduled for that afternoon. I called his office and was immediately put on hold and was left on hold for almost 5 minutes (4 minutes & 47 seconds). I hung up and called back and was picked up on the 3rd ring. I explained the situation to the person that answered the phone, and she told me she would call Kevin's cell phone and relay the message. After waiting 45 minutes, I called back and asked them if this was the way they normally did business. I had told her in my earlier call I needed the survey back within an hour as I had another company coming to give me an estimate and asked if he had kept it so I couldn't get estimates from others.I got a call from Kevin about 5 minutes later. He was somewhat apologetic about leaving with the survey, but also gave me a hard time about upsetting his staff. I explained I had others coming out to give me estimates and I needed my survey back. He said he was already back in Turnersville (about 20 minutes from my house), and was telling me about issues he was having with his truck and the repair center that had worked on it. I asked him when he would return my survey and he said later that day (Mon) or the next morning (Tue). I got the survey information the other salesmen would need from Kevin over the phone, and expected to have my survey returned by the next morning. At noon the next day I had not received the Survey and I needed to leave the house to run some errands. I called Kevin to tell him to leave the survey in my mail box, and he told me he wouldn't be able to bring it to me until Thursday morning.
Thursday came and went without my survey being returned to me.
I called Kevin on Friday and asked when he was going to return my survey. He began telling me about the problems with his truck again, and mentioned mailing it to me. At that point I asked him where he was and told him I would come get it. He told me I could pick it up at their office in Williamstown (30 to 40 miles from my house). I asked him if he had ever heard of Angie's list and recommended he look his business up on that website in a couple of days and hung up.
He called back almost immediately and I seriously thought about not answering. I didn't want to escalate the situation anymore, but I was REALLY hoping he was calling to say he was on his way to bring my survey back to me, so I answered. Kevin said "Why are you trying to bully me? This is how I feed my family. If somebody comes between me and feeding my family, I'd handle that...I'd really have to handle that." I told him all that was going to be there was a fair and honest account of what had happened and I hung up.
I couldn't believe he threatened me like that!
When I arrived at their office, Kevin begged me not to put anything on Angie's list, kept talking about the situation with his truck (yet there were 3 or 4 other vehicles parked there that could have been used to return my survey), how his whole family worked there, etc. Not once did he apologize for the threat he had made to me on the phone.
Note to Kevin: I have video cameras installed at my house (front and back). PLEASE do not escalate this any further - stay away from me, my family, and my house.
I really feel bad writing this review. I honestly don't believe this is their normal way of doing business (how could they stay in business if it was?). It seems there were some issues going on in Kevin's life that may have caused him to not necessarily handle all of this in the best of ways, but this is the experience I had with this company and it's owner directly. I hope some of his "happy" customers will write reviews for them so mine is not the only one.
Who would have ever thought a "free" estimate would cost me 1 1/2 hours of my time and $18 in gas?
It's a shame, because K&J's initial "oral" estimate (using superior fencing materials) was only $300 more than another company using the "standard" fencing material. Even if he didn't match the price of the other company (which I think he would have), he still could have gotten the job if he had made an effort to return my survey. Unfortunately, after threatening me (and not apologizing), there was no way I was going to give him my business.
"We call every appointment to confirm and ask that they call us back to confirm the appointment and that they will be there. We go to all confirmed appointments. We value our customers and their time which is why we have this policy."
