My car broke down on Apr. 27. It was clearly visible that there was a leak in the coolant system. And I knew it was likely that the leak was coming from the radiator because I had already changed the hoses, thermostat, and water pump in the previous one to two years. So, I got my car towed by the AAA to this workshop.

Upon arrival, after explaining what I though the problem was, the mechanic immediately said that he could not diagnose the problem until the following morning, even though it was before 1 pm.

(This is not my regular mechanic, so in the meantime, I contacted my mechanic and asked him for an estimate to have the radiator replaced, which in Edison, NJ was estimated at $330, both parts and labor)

The next morning, I am told that the radiator needs to be replaced and that it is recommended to have the thermostat replaced as well, even though I mentioned the thermostat was a year or two old. Then, he proceeded to explain to me that parts and labor would be over 700 dollars and that if I did not want to go ahead with the job, it would cost me 98 dollars plus tax to get my car back because he had performed a pressure test to locate the leak. Note that my car is a Chevrolet Cavalier from 2001 and is not worth more than 1250 dollars and the pressure test in Edison is below 70 dollars.

I rejected the job and picked up my car, refilled the coolant fluid and was able to drive it back to my regular mechanic.

On top of that, when picking up the car, they rejected to give me the 10% discount for AAA members with the excuse that the discount is only for when one accepts the estimate given by them. This is completely not true.

On the next business day, I had my car repaired at my regular facility and, as promised, it cost me only $330.
