Our only suggestion is for Mike to be a little more responsive to the calls which will probably help him get more business. Earlier in the year, we had tried to reach him to follow through on a quote he had provided in the winter but failed to get a response. We called many contractors again to restart the process and it was coincidence that he got called again. This time he was prompt in scheduling the work for the next day (Sunday).
While work done seems to be of good quality, the price may not be lowest as we did receive one lower quote but for us timing was critical. By the way, Mike did not show any renewed alacrity with regards to picking up the check either.
All in all, we recommend Spasato Construction
We would definitely use him again!
Very Expensive. Used Cement Blocks as opposed to the original brick character of chimney. Reasoning was a timing issue in which outdoors it was very cold. When finished, they did not restore the chimney to the exact original stating which was is why we paid a lot to get the same character and Quality from start to finish. They came recommended but our experience has been we did not get what we paid for, bottom line.
"I'm sorry you feel that way member, I wish you would have contacted me via personal cell phone which i provided you with to discuss any issues or concerns. Your chimney was originally made from bricks and were coated at a later time with a masonry stucco. We rebuilt the section that was torn down using concrete blocks instead of bricks because they are stronger and the cement coating will bond better to the porous blocks then bricks. It was not to save time or money. Price wise, I do not know why you think we were very expensive. The work was paid out by your insurance company which was assessed by an appraiser. The insurance company accepted our bid and paid out with no questions asked, meaning our bid was lower then what they estimated. If you paid $1,500 for a quality paint job on your car, but could of got it done at Maaco for $300, it doesn't mean you got ripped off. It just means you got what you paid for just like you do with us. All of our employees are dedicated, long-term and well trained. Our work is preformed with modified materials to out preform standard cement mixes. Your chimney was done in the cold winter months when it is very hard to work with cement mixes, and even so it was completed properly with no cracks, bonding failure, efflorescence, or other masonry issues associated with performing masonry work in the winter months. We appreciate the work and value your opinion."
After I received a few other quotes and everything being equal I choose them because of how detailed they where in explaining the problem to me. I called back on Tuesday to confirm moving forward with the work and they were there on Wednesday morning. Took about 2 hours to complete. They were quiet, respectful, and very professional. No mess was left and there were no signs they were even there.
Bigger surprise was when Mike called me on Thursday to advise he would reduce the price of the job from the $4,000 quoted to $3,500, since he got in and out in one day and his cost was less then he thought.
The work looks very good and I've rated Mike an and quot;Aand quot; on quality, though I'll just comment that the new courses of brick kind of stand out from the older brick - brighter red - I had hoped they would match more closely using the artificially and quot;agedand quot; bricks Mike had promised. Spoke to Mike who assures me they will weather in and look the same as the others in a couple months. Mike is an honest and forthright guy and I highly recommend him - I'm sure if I have any issues or questions going forward he'll take care of it.
The bricks on the front porch were cleaned, and a sealant applied. It was done correctly it seems on the side of the porch, where the bricks are vertical. The top, hence the most visible, has a cloudy finish that they assured me would either wash off, or they would correct it. It hasn't, and they didn't. They haven't come back, after many repeated calls. We'll never see them again ... thankfully.
Finally, we sent a registered letter to them with enclosed photos of the problem areas. Even that had no effect, other than their acknowledging the receipt. So, I think I've covered all bases.
On 8/9/12, Mr. Sposato evidently read my initial review, which I have upgraded in this current rating. Mr. Sposato said he was unaware of the problem because his former secretary, whom he says he has fired, did not pass the information on to him. Since I had stopped calling, he assumed the job was done. I said when we got no response, we stopped calling. He is a good fellow, and came and rectified the situation with the front porch bricks. Now they look fine. If he maintains a tighter control on his employees, he should do fine.
"I apologize for the mix up with this customer our workers have a copy of our repair sheet and your house has been marked as completed. We have not herd from you either so i had no reason to think it has not been completed. I will be out there this week to fix the issues. The sealer has water trapped underneath it that is why you have a cloudy surface. We just have to re emulsify the sealer with a thinner to let the water vapors out.It is just a cosmetic issue nothing major. Don't remember what the exact issues where with the chimney work we did but we where paid in full and still came back and fixed it right away. The reason the sealer issue was not addressed at the same time was because the weather was to cold. You are right and i am not fighting with you about it, you did call i even remember talking to you. But your making it sound like we came did a horrible job got paid and took off on you when we both know that was not the case. We did a beautiful job for you and have solved all your issues for a very reasonable price, a lot of companies out there charge not hundred but thousands more for the work we preformed for you. Here is my direct cell phone number 908-502-2511 give me a call when you get a chance so we can work out a time for me to come by and make sure i address any and all issues you need me to when i come out thanks. Mike Sposato"
I was willing to give him another chance and he offered that the work could be done soon and without my presence which I agreed to. As it turned out I had to be at home for another contractor so I was able to witness the work and I must say that it was done very professionally and was completed the same day. Also, they did a small repair on a step that had loosened and power washed and cleaned up the area where they were working.
By the way, my understanding from Mike is that the person in and quot;the officeand quot; that got this off on the wrong track is no longer there so communications should be better. My advice though is that you talk to Mike directly if you have any problems and I am confident that, like me, he will take care of it to your satisfaction.
"This is mike the owner. You are absolutely right and i apologize for the inconvenience we have cost you. I had three employees call me the night before at 10 PM to let me know they were out of town for the 4th of July weekend and our driver did not come into work on Friday. They will be dealt with on Monday maybe even terminated. The secretary you spoke with was also terminated for not doing her job as well. She told me you were upset because you had to take off of work and we didn't show up and did not want to reschedule. You would find someone else to do the job. I truly apologize for the inconvenience again and would like to touch base with you this week to see if we could discuss and work something out."
"Member, Thank you for your generous review! We're happy to hear that you're fully satisfied with our work, and we thank you for choosing us to preform the repairs on your chimney. Should you ever need any other masonry work done in the future, please do not hesitate to give us a call!"
One significant aspect about this job is that it was all coordinated over the phone as i live in Colorado and the house is in New Jersey. This required a contractor that i could trust and Mike Sposato immediately gained my confidence. I wasn't dissapointed.
I was extremely pleased with Mike's work, his professionalism and the results and highly recommend Sposato Construction LLC.
The entire wall had to be taken down and rebuilt. They worked with us to try and save some of the masonry, but because of how the original builder put the wall up, they were not salvageable. We were grateful for the care they tried to take to help us out there. The original wall was not built with correct drainage. This was added, and looks spectacular.
During construction, Anthony realized that we might be able to slightly change the design of the wall with no extra cost. He showed me his idea, and we moved forward. We love the new look much more than the old one!
Due to Hurricane Irene, they were understandably busy. However, we had a lengthy pre-planned trip at the end of December that would last through the new year and into Spring. Jessica, Mike and Anthony worked with us to get us into the schedule before we left so that the wall would not be left un-repaired through snow fall.
The guys arrived promptly each day, and when the job was done, they even power-washed the driveway to clear off any debris. We were very pleased with every aspect of the job.
He took a look indoors and out and determined that we hadn't pulled the chain to the flue completely shut. (yes, embarassing, we know) While he could have created lots of expensive 'problems' for our chimney and fireplace, what I appreciate most is that he told us up front our oversight and was on his way. We are happily using our fireplace daily and would call Sposato if needed based on the honesty and integrity of the representative.
Michael Sposato from Sposato Masonry returned my call promptly and came out to our house to discuss the project and provide an estimate (free of charge). He was very professional and humble, not at all pushy or arrogant. He listened as we described what we hoped to accomplish, assessed the work and offered some options. Once we decided on a direction, Michael described how he proposed to complete the work, the timing to complete and left us with pages of references and a detailed project cost.
We received estimates from others but choose Sposato Masonry because we were comfortable with Michaels plan, his references gave us confidence that he was skilled and experienced in his trade and we thought the price was fair.
The crew arrived on time as scheduled, were neat and respectful of our home. They did not mind our presence and questions as they worked and completed everything as described and on time.
We were so impressed and happy with the fireplace and chimney work that we also hired them repoint our front brick steps and clean and reseal the brick face on our two story colonial. It looks amazing.
They take pride in their work and are true tradesmen. We will call on Sposato Masonry again and highly recommend their work.
I will list the pluses and minuses of the service below so the reader can formulate their own opinion.
Plus:
1) somewhat prompt response to schedule an estimate
2) on-time to provide estimate
3) very competitive rate
4) volunteered that I would receive a discount (āsenior discountā)
5) good workmanship and work completed in one day, as promised
Minus:
1) I was told that I would be called the day before the workmen would arrive. I never received a call. This could have been a problem because the workers needed electrical power outside. If I was not at home (I was about to leave for the day when the workmen arrived so I had to cancel my plans), the workers would not have had access to electrical power.
2) the truck carrying the equipment leaked oil and left an oil spill on a recently sealed macadam driveway, directly in front of the main home entrance. This spot had to be treated by me so visitors would not track oil into my home.
