Kitchen and Bathroom Remodel, Marble and Granite Service + 1 more
$40,000
Our main issues in doing this bathroom renovation was to get a shower base that had no threshold for a wheelchair and to do it in the allotted time frame of three weeks.  My folks are older and my father had Parkinson's and was frail.  We could not have emphasizes how critical the time frame was.  We were moving them out for the three weeks so the contractor had ample time and access to the space.  Mike agreed to the timeframe and all involved.
The talk was great up until the actual start of the job.  The picking of the materials and layout of the space was fine.  He has a great selection of cabinets and coutertops to choose from.  My boyfriend did all of the measuring and engineering of the shower base that was to be made of corian.  We removed the bathtub ourselves so we could get the proper measurements for the shower base.  We freecycled the cabinets ourselves.  So the demo was 75% complete by the time he came in. We picked out the tile from Berkley Tile and had it delivered to the site.  We picked out the fixtures from Ferguson and had them delivered.  The lighting fixtures were purchased by us at Auroroa Lighting in Sparta.  We got the permits from the town.  The only products we actually purchased directly from Mike were the shower base, the cabinets,  the mirrors and the labor.   Mike showed nothing but confidence that we could do everything in the time allowed.
We moved my folks into a hotel on a Monday and Mike was to start the next day.  He was a complete no show the first three days with absolutely no contact.  Now he had $20,000 of our monies to cover the cost of the base and the cabinets and mirrors.  When he finally came, no reason was given for the delay.  And he said he could still do the job in the time frame.
The subcontractors he hired were good.  The issue we had here was that the subcontractors were in our condo and Mike was not.  He gave them the keys and passes for the gatehouse with out our permission.  We explicitly didn't want anyone in the condo unless he was there to supervise.  Regardless, the electrician was wonderful and the first tile setter was good.  Mike didn't like what the first tile guy did and had another guy in the next day to redo that.  Of course that put him behind even more.
Since we are in a condo situation, we told Mike that he could work when ever he wanted, but that he would have to keep the noise to a minimum before 8am and and after 6pm, but he could work 7 days a week.  I got more complaints from neighbors during this whole entire job.  Mike was dirty, noisy and flat out rude to our neighbors.  Mike said it was the neighbors themselves, but when you have over 8 individual people come forward with complaints, who would you believe?  I did more running around after work making amends than I would have ever thought I would do.  Mike also damaged the threshold coming into the main entrance for the building which, after us having make a big deal about it, he replaced.
When the cabinets were installed, Mike was shorted hardware.  It turns out that didn't actually "recieve" and check them in when he got them two weeks prior.  So 80% of the drawers work fine and the other 20% suck.  He spent a day running around trying to get hardware that would work. He has yet to make good on getting us the proper hardware.  Once the floor to ceiling cabinets were installed, it was obvious that there is a major defect in one of the doors.   But since Mike never checked the product when it arrived to him, he didn't know.  He made no attempt to replace the door at any time.  Out of two mirrors that went over the vanity , one was damaged and, again, no attempt to make good on them.
The Corian base was designed perfectly, but of course that was our doing since we gave him the drawings and measurements to submit for fabrication.  The installation was sub-par by Mike.  He said he knew what he was doing but we ended up with an air pocket under the set base which give a "thud" when you step on it.  The tile work, done by subcontractor #2, sucked on the walls.  The patterns of the tiles do NOT flow in the five sided shower and some of the tiles stick out just a little bit.  The execution of the tile in the bath was 40%.  The installation of the tiling on the floor was 60%.
Mike made the Corian counter tops himself.  The craftmanship was fine on that, except for the fact that we had specifically wanted the the faucet and handles on the right side of the sink.  With my father being in a wheelchair, this would mean he could reach the faucet easier.  Mike forgot this and installed them in the usual spot.  Again, we just got a shrug and dumb look.
The room remains unpainted since we kicked him off the job after after we ran a week over.  He didn't offer to compensate for the hotel expenses that we incurred for the extended stay.
The kicker in this whole job was that my Dad didn't get to see the final bathroom since he passed away that last week that Mike worked over.  The stress of the entire thing and all of the issues that Mike brought with him brought about his passing.  And to add insult to injury, Mike expected to get paid in FULL the day before the funeral.  No condolence card.  No "I'm sorry".
The design of the bathroom is great.  But we did all of that from picking out, sourcing and getting product to doing all of the engineering.  The execution, however, is another matter.  I would stay away from this guy at all cost.
