drain pipe

I hired this company last spring to install an underground drainage system in my yard. The system tied in 2 downspouts and my sump pump discharge pipe which led to 2 pop-up drains in my yard 18 feet away from my foundation. I hired them largely in part due to what they claim on their website: "Landscapers think they do drainage, Irrigation companies claim they do drainage, at Drainage and More, WE DO DRAINAGE!" The initial contact was fine. The owner showed up on time took some measurements and told me what he was going to do. An estimate of $750 for the work was then sent to me via email several days later. Even though it was pretty darn expensive, I went with them due to their purported knowledge of lawn drainage. Heck, who wants a wet basement! On the day of the job, 1 worker showed up. He dug approximately 30-35 feet of trench in my yard approximately 1 foot deep and installed the drainage system. From start to finish, it took approximately 3 hours for an hourly rate of $250! Materials consisted of gravel, drain pipes (the type you can get from home depot) and 2 pop up drains. He connected the existing sump pump drain pipe to a pvc pipe which led into the ground where it was then connected to another pipe that led it out into the yard. I immediately questioned whether this would be a good idea since the water in the pipe may freeze which would essentially disable my sump pump. I was assured that this would not happen as the pipe that connected the sump pump discharge from the house and the main pipe in the ground was not glued. If it froze, the water would just spill out. And I was advised that they have a 5 year warranty on their systems and that if there were any problems to call them. A few weeks later, still feeling uneasy about the sump pump discharge line, I did a bit of research. The way to prevent a sump pump discharge line from freezing was to install an air gap! That is a gap between 2 pipes. I did not find one single authority which stated that not gluing the pvc pipe was an acceptable practice. I emailed the owner with my concerns. No response. I figured it was the busy season. A week later, another email was sent. Finally someone else from the company emailed me and told me that the owner, would call me back. When he finally called me, i expressed my concerns regarding the setup on my sump pump discharge. He stated that they did it all the time and that it would not freeze. If it did, the water would just spill out. He's the expert according to his website, so whom am I to argue. Fast forward to last week. Temperatures got down to 5 degrees. I was in my basement checking on something when I heard a faint buzzing sound coming from my sump pit. It was my sump pump. The water in the pit was warm. Apparently, the pump had been running for some time and was unable to pump out the water. To prevent the pump from burning out, I immediately pulled the cord from the socket. I called the owner on both numbers that I had and also emailed him with the situation. I also advised him that it was scheduled to rain in a few days and that my sump pump has been unplugged. This could lead to flooding. No response a day later, so I sent another email. No response 2 days later, so I send a 3rd and final email reminding them that if my sump pump is clogged it could caused flooding in my basement and that this was an emergency. Of course, as to be expected, there was no response. Rather than risk a flooded basement I had to get someone else to come out and fix their screw up. At this point its been a little over a week and I highly doubt that I will ever hear from them or that they'll honor their 5 year warranty. I'm going to write to the BBB, the NJ DEP that licenses them, and take them to small claims ct. They are unprofessional and incompetent to say the least. I would not recommend them to my worst enemy.
