We installed our Water furnace Geothermal System in November 2013, and we have been very pleased with the results. From the beginning when Patrick Ryan came to our house and explained the process and he walked us through every step along the way. As well as the contractors ? Robbins Well Services - that came to the house and drilled the holes to install the system?everyone was very professional and very patient with us. I know that we drove everyone a little crazy with all of our questions and concerns, but Tim Ryan and the team that installed the system were very patient with us during the entire process. They removed our old oil tank, completed an energy audit and added a new breaker box and duct work in the addition to the house that was not properly installed. In addition, the office staff ? Palmira Valente and Crestina Marujo - was extremely professional and helped guide us through all of the paperwork, which included rebates and tax incentives.
If you are interested in going green and installing a geothermal system in your home, please give them a call. You will not be disappointed.

Patrick Ryan's initial estimate and attention to detail was a good way to start the project. Scheduling with Crestina's help could not have been smoother - there was constant contact and follow-up, including setting up permits, etc. The job was split into multiple phases/days and the entire crew was professional, hard-working and a group of genuinely nice/helpful people even when I had some questions related to things outside the scope of work.
Most of all the entire crew worked well together as a team (they'd done this before) and had a lot of experience...no fumbling around, etc. Overall, I would definitely recommend them even if their estimate comes out a touch higher than others for you (our estimate was in the same ball-park as others).
From my first contact with Patrick, through the one year maintenance visit that was just performed, everyone I have dealt with - Patrick and Tim (two of the owners), the installation crew, led by Kenny, maintenance personal, Palmira and Crestina my contacts at the office everyone has been professional, courteous and willing to go the extra mile to ensure everything was perfect. They are very knowledgeable and willing to take the time to answer questions, talk things through and even brainstorm on ideas with the homeowner.
With a job this size, you can expect hiccups but all have been handled promptly and have always exceed my expectations.
Ryan wasn't the most expensive, and while they weren't the cheapest they were the right choice. As I noted there were hiccups, but not one resulted in extra costs, and I'm sure it impacted profits. Patrick stood by his word that his price was turn key, with no hidden costs.
In summary - I am very satisfied with Ryan, would use them again, and would recommend them!
Very courteous service and will use them again.
A rep from Ryan came out shortly after and performed the heat envelope calculation and that afternoon Ryan contacted me to confirm which size unit was appropriate for my space.
Upon installation all of the employees of Ryan were very punctual, professional, courteous and collaborative. They took the time and care to lay drop clothes and protect my home where they had to travel through. The Project Manager worked with me through decisions that had to be made and accommodated any of our issues very well. They were also very flexible to accommodate an existing contractor who was doing the refinishing of the basement with regards to electrical tie ins and such.
The unit is now up and running and is perfect for the space. I am extremely happy I chose Ryan for this installation they made the process hassle free and as little intrusive as possible.
As part of working with the "NJ Home Performance with energy star" program, they also did an energy analysis of the house to be eligible for a rebate and a 0% loan via the state program. A geothermal system costs quite a bit, but Ryan showed how the various rebates and other programs such as a 30% federal tax credit could make it more affordable. They handled all the paperwork for those programs. Other contractors we spoke with did not want to deal with any rebates.
After we decided to install the system, drilling the wells took less than a week (we were told our ground turned out to be easy to drill) and installation took a couple days. The workers cleanup up after themselves very well and Ryan was flexible regarding coming back to finish patching holes where duct work was done, since we were also adding some new lighting in the same rooms at the time.
A WaterFurnace Series 5 geothermal system was installed, along with a water tank that the geothermal system preheats, and a regular resistance style 50 gallon water heater. The single zone ducts were split into 2 zones. They also performed energy saving work, such as sealing the house much better than it was before.
We had Ryan come back to tweak the system, such as adding a 3rd zone instead of just 2 zones and moving the new zones' thermostats to better locations.
The electrical usage of the new water heater was much higher than what we would have liked. Even with the preheated water provided by the geothermal HVAC system, the electric resistance water heater used a lot of electricity, especially in the parts of the year where the HVAC system does not run at all. After discussing this with Patrick, the original water heater was replaced with a heat pump style 80 gallon water heater, which has been using much less electricity.
All work was done by Ryan; there were no subcontractors, which was another plus.
My wife and I own a very old 2-family home in the Jersey City Heights are with two half a century old water boiler systems. For years I've been meaning to replace both boiler system but never did because they always worked. Like they say ?it's still working; don't change anything?, until we notice the gas bill going up every winter. With no doubt, the efficiency of these boilers were very poor. So we decided to call around to get quotes for two new boilers and a friend referred me to Patrick Ryan. Let me just say that Patrick is a very unique man. When he showed up to my place for the inspection, he shared so much information on how we can improve the moisture in the basement, etc. You can ask Patrick any question about you home when it comes to CAC, moisture, energy savings, etc and he will have a solution. Anyway, he immediately pointed out that both my boiler and water heaters have their combustion process connected to the living space, which can be dangerous because of Carbon Monoxide leakage in the living space. Worst yet, Patrick showed me the venting system on one of water heaters appears to be in a failed state.
Patrick basically dropped it like this to us that by replacing both boiler units and incorporating the water heating into the system, that our home would be much safer from Carbon Monoxide as well as cut down the yearly gas costs by roughly 50%-60%. Also, Patrick said that by replacing both of them, we can get a sizable rebate (approx. $4600). He also added that there are no immediate out of pocket costs and we just pay back the monthly loan with our monthly utility savings. Very Easy!
This was a no brainer decision. My wife and I financed the entire cost of the work proposed by Ryan Inc through one of Ryan Inc. loan partners which provide competitive low rates.
Within a couple of weeks Ryan Inc. took care of the permits and the installation date was set. The staff at Ryan Inc were friendly and professional. They were able to work around our schedule to get the installation completed. Before we knew it our old boiler and water systems were replaced by two Navien NCB Combi Units. This opened up so much additional space for us to use as storage or to expand our basement. In addition, Patrick gave me a good price on replacing a bathroom basement fan for proper ventilation.
Personally, the Navien systems look amazing. Very modern and very safe. You do not need to worry about Carbon Monoxide. This system will auto shutoff if it detects Carbon Monoxide. The other amazing thing the Navien can do is heat your water in real-time with no tanks. For a fact, this brought up the value of my home.
The project went fine, but I have not noticed much savings from the system Ryan recommended. The project cost was $20,000, which included insulating the house and installed the new hybrid heat pump system. My out of pocket costs were $10,000 and Ryan got the remainder from the energy program. Ryan staffed the job well and the work was OK. I had to have them come back a few times because their workers did not properly seal ductwork and did not properly set a thermostat, and did not do a couple other things as well as they should have.
Based on my energy audit Ryan recommended a hybrid heat pump system to achieve the required energy efficiency. After they installed the system I noticed on the report they had written down my air conditioning unit was from the 1990s, when it was the original one from the 1960s. I wish I had gone with a regular system. I haven't noticed savings. I think they could have achieved the energy rating by replacing my hot water heater but they did not explore that option with me. The heat pump uses electric heat until the temperature outside reaches a certain degree, and is supposed to then switch over to gas. That was supposed to be set around 40 or 50 degrees. This winter, after receiving a sky high electric bill, I called Ryan and they sent a technician over right away. I learned my system was set to click over at 15 degrees to natural gas and used electric heat until then, when it should have clicked over at 40 or 50 degrees. With the cost of electric, you can imagine how high that month's bill had been with the cold winter we had.
I give Ryan an A rating for professionalism and responsiveness. They stand by their work and will make good if an issue arises. I wish he would have offered to pay the difference in my electric bill, however, I did not ask him to pay. They are a bit pricey, but with some of the other fly-by-night contractors I received bids from, I at least knew Ryan would be around to fix any issues that may arise. It has been a few years and they have been really good about coming back and have not charged me. I would recommend them, but as with anything else, do your homework.
I moved my kitchen and I asked him to install a line for my stove. I told him I wanted to install the lines that previously serviced the stove for a gas dryer. Instead of initially installing the lines for the stove and leaving the other ones where it was, he replaced the existing line. I don't know he stays in business. I had him put lights in the basements and they worked for about 6 months and then they quit. They were very eager to take my money. He said he was going to come back and he never followed up.
