Miguel gave me a great sales pitch in July of 2016. When I was hesitant to sign a contract because of a few extra costs, he gladly dropped the prices down to a more acceptable level. I provided a $6000 deposit to them and waited for them to start the job. After 3 weeks I followed up to see what was taking so long. They assured me they would be out to start the job later that week. Then when they didn't show up I again called to find out why. This happened 4 times before they stopped returning my phone calls. It is now January of 2017 and nothing has been completed. These guys are an absolute scam. Great salesmen, but they are not roofers. DO NOT HIRE!!!

Exterior Boss just complete my roof and visibly everything looks beautiful, I'll repost after heavy rains if there is any leaking. Listing the reasons for the rating.
  • Showed up after 10 a.m. everyday, with exception of last 2 days.
  • No dumpster day 1, shingles collected on tarps with holes in driveway/lawn
  • Inadequate protection of landscaping/ house facade resulted in the top sheared off a juniper tree and a 2"x8" tear in a window screen.
  • Air compressor would need to be restarted roughly 5 times a day.
  • No ladder bumpers used, ladders sit directly against flashing or gutters.
  • BAIT & SWITCH!! They changed underlayment from what was written on contract. When made aware of issue, they tried to cover with various excuses. Owner offered to personally pick up the correct underlayment because he knew he violated business ethics which voids contract. I opted for a discount, concerned for the integrity of the roof.
  • Contractor tried to convince me underlayment he was using was IKO's comparable product to what was listed on contract, but a quick internet search proved otherwise. IKO had comparable products, but what they were using was not it. I was sold synthetic underlayment, they were using heavy duty felt paper. The same felt paper their salesman explained competitors used and was inferior.
  • I personally covered our BBQ/smoke with wood to avoid damage. The workers uncovered and moved it to work in that area, then never covered it back up and hit it with a shingle tearing the grill cover and nicking a handle.
  • Ran out of appropriate nails for ridge vent, most likely would not have gotten the correct type had I not offered to go first.
  • Bent flashing around window outcove. After I pointed it out, they offered to fix it, abut I declined. Ladder bumpers would have prevented this.
  • Rushed to finish the last day in order to comply with a 10:30 final inspection by the city.
  • Took 5 days to complete what contract says is a 1-2 day job. Weather was not an issue.
  • Their cleanup was minimal. I found +100 nails with big fridge magnets taped to a stick. I had to do this daily due to prevent injury to my small children and dog.
  • Owner wanted to get paid before job was completed. I told him not until the dumpster was out of my driveway, as contract noted, "complete clean-up of all job site debris". Infuriated he exclaimed he'd be back at 8 a.m. the next morning when the dumpster would get picked for his check. The following day he sat in his car in front of my house for +5 hours, until the dumpster truck came and removed the dumpster from my driveway. Superb time management.
  • Owner took torn screen for repair and hasn't returned it.

I withheld $1,000 for the damages and switching of materials. I wish I could say this list is exaggerated. Unfortunately it's not. I opened this Angie's list account because I felt compelled to detail this experience for others awareness.
Like I said, visibly beautiful, I'll repost after heavy rains if there's leaking. If you decide to go with Exterior Boss, at the least check materials at time of install match those you paid for on contract.

Response from Exterior Boss
"Response to each issue: 1. Our records indicate that a check was received – not sure who asked for cash and was never made aware of issue? 2. Exterior Boss recommended a full replacement rather than a “repair” – as repairs do not fix an entire roof (which was needed in this case) Mr. [Member Name Removed] opted for a repair despite our full written recommendation. 3. Exterior Boss reached out to Mr. [Member Name Removed] to write a review on our behalf - Only from this post was Boss made aware there was an issue. Boss immediately contacted [Member Name Removed] to see where the leak was and to inspect said leak – his response: “I don’t have time to talk about this” ."

The price was great, it just took a while to get it actually installed. It was done though finally and the quality of work was great.

The sales pitch from Paul and the beginning of the installation went fine -- except that they did cash my post-dated check (post dated to allow time for funds to move from savings to checking) and I incurred insufficient funds fees of $170.
A very courteous group of non-English speaking people started work on time.  Then...
The owner of the company, Ihab Waked, showed up demanding final payment for the job when the job was 50% complete, which is illegal.  (I did not know this at the time).  My yard looked like a hurricane had come through and when I explained that I would pay him when the job was complete he got "huffy."  When I persisted in not paying him, he accused me of being rude.  I finally said I would consider paying another installment later in the day (just to get rid of him) and he went away.  Later his project manager Jack Fisher called me and said, quote:  Have you given any thought to what you will pay today?  I didn't realize demanding payment prior to completing the work is a violation of the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act.  I agreed to give him a check, holding enough back as an incentive for them to come back and complete the job.  They did however come back and complete the job.  Initially it failed inspection due to a very minor issue, but they came back and fixed the problem.  The roof passed and I paid the balance.

UPDATE:  Our complete project with Exterior Boss included windows under a separate contract.  After six months of waiting for a delivery date, during which time the web site went down and the phone number stopped working, they gave me an installation date for windows that were not the same brand that I had ordered.  At this point, I asked for a refund and I was very gratified when a representative of the company delivered a cashier's check to my residence and apologized sincerely, saying that the company was experiencing some growing pains.  I was satisfied with this outcome.
Response from Exterior Boss
"I apologize for any confusions [Member Name Removed] (as you are aware) - Would you kindly confirm that the Window Contract deposit /refund was hand delivered with a cashier's check within 30 days of the final cancellation?"

Response from Exterior Boss
"1. Customer states that she asked for references and did not receive any - The same day the request was made via email (4/23/15) Boss replied with 5 references (said email was forwarded to Angie’s List for confirmation); 2. Customer states that she couldn’t reach Exterior Boss – Customer was emailed VP’s personal cell phone # which remains the same # to date. (That email has been forwarded to Angie’s list for confirmation as well); 3. “… an amended Proposal..” Boss has no information on such amendment. Customer had all contact information, including 2 personal cell phone numbers, yet did not contact Boss. I believe customer has Exterior Boss mixed up with another company – see #4; 4. “… information on the company. He said that the company was called Modern Exterior out of Phila” Exterior Boss never operated out of Phila nor was it ever called “Modern Exterior”; 5. This customer did not answer calls or emails attempting to follow up – It is clear this customer mixed up companies."

So I called exterior boss to make an appointment and a girl named Christina took my phone call. She was very polite and professional, she even called back to confirm my appointment once we had set a date up. Then on the day a guy was suppose to come over and give me an estimate, the guy(sorry I don't remember his name) calls me an hour ahead of time and says he's running late. I say that's ok because I'm running late too. So we both agree that the upcoming Saturday would b fine. Saturday at 1:00 to be exact. Saturday comes around, nobody shows nor calls. So call Christina around 1:35 and she says let me call the guy and see where he's at. In fact I'll have him call you. Still no phone call. So the owner of the company (allegedly) calls me and proceeds to tell me that the guy supposedly came to my house and write up an estimate for $2000 and they were waiting on me to call back. So I said how can that be when nobody ever came to my house. So I voice my displeasure to the"boss" and hangs up the phone. Guess who calls me around 6:30? The guy....then he actually calls me a few days later and we again decide for him to come this Saturday. No call, no show. NEVER AGAIN!!!
