"Thanks. It was a pleasure working for you folks."
"At the outset the customer was told that are charges were based on time & materials with all out of pocket expenses billed dollar for dollar. The labor exceeded the estimate because of difficulty removing two of the old posts. We worked for him two times before in December and he was quite pleased. I wonder why he did not provide a review of those times?"
He estimated this job would cost $700. I know there are a few bullets up there, but the cabinet lock and securing the molding I figured would be 15 mins each (being conservative). I know that you have to wait for patch to dry, primer to dry, etc. But I couldnt quite wrap my head around 10 hours (more or less) for this list.
So, I asked him to drop some scope, and we would aim for $500. So we dropped the removal of the childproofing items (a wildcard in terms of how long it would go).
I have to say, some of the delay was self inflicted (we werent home when we agreed to meet, etc), and Art was excellent at communicating the burn rate against the estimate. That said, we were at $600 and not nearly done with the reduced scope items.
So I ended up paying $600 (turned into $640 as I forgot to ask if his quote included tax--it did not. My bad on that one) and am now painting and installing the cabinet magnet.
All that being said, Art is completely professional. Does great work. But you have to know that he works at a measured pace. That costs money. He also sometimes leverages a colleague (also a great guy. Does terrific work). This counts against the burn rate (ie, his rate is $80ish for the first hour, $60ish for each hour after. If he needs help, this doubles). I knew this ahead of time, and Art walked me through it, but it definitely impacts bottom line.
I would use Art again, but maybe for something less paint-heavy. I would look for places to use his skills more efficiently
"I thought we had a good rapport and am surprised she thought my discussion with her about the cost was in anger. It certainly was not! I explained why it took longer than she thought it would. I don't understand why she said I was angry and menacing...we discussed why the bill was what it was....mostly because of the need to remove the damaged trim carefully so as not to damage the walls. I don't recall be angry at all or yelling. There were more like 7 specific locations that had damages that needed repair, two of which were around ducts and involved door casing, plinths, base and shoe molding as well as the apron under a double window. The bill included $665. for labor, $96 for materials and $53.27 for tax."
