The next day, after the morning showers, as I was leaving for work I started to smell smoke. I went to check on the water heater and noticed alot of smoke coming from the top. I immediately shut the breaker off and removed the cover to the electrical box on the top of the water heater. All of the wire nuts had completely melted along with insulation on some of the wires. Upon further investigation, I noticed that the wire Tom used to connect the water heater to the nearby circuit breaker was a smaller gauge than the original wire (which he left behind). After telling my wife what happened, she explained that after Tom installed the water heater, she was in the basement with him and he kept grasping the wire. At the time, she thought nothing of it, but we now realized he was checking to see if it was getting hot. This tells me that he knew he installed it incorrectly and didnt care...
I immediately called him to explain what happened. He came about an hour and a half later. Upon examining the water heater he immediately tried to claim that the water heater was faulty. When I showed him the new wire he installed and the old wire he removed he got very nervous. He got even more nervous after I brought up the fact that he was checking the wire for heat after the install.
He did offer to replace the wire, but at that point I didnt want him touching anything. His work was sloppy, and downright dangerous. I have no doubt that my house could have caught fire if this happened when no one was home.
