Don't use these people. They demanded $250 in cash in addition to the fee they'd already been paid and refused to unload anything from their truck until they got their extra money. One of the movers took us to the side and apologized and said they did the same to the previous customer and still had to do it to the next one that night or they wouldn't get paid. They even left a box behind at my friend's house that belongs to the next victim on their list. She's called to let them know but they've never been back to take it to the rightful owner. My friend is trying to get that customer's name through the police and will report Star City Movers to the Dept. of Consumer Affairs and possibly sue.

The move went fine until we got to the new location. Everything was rushed. They put together my wall units very fast. I found that the frames of drawers were taken out. They drilled a hole in to my bedroom wall unit that was not there and started to drill another hole and did not complete it. I contacted the company to let them know my issues and the owner did not respond to my complaint & blocked my email. The owner Dean's lack of communication is unprofessional. They damaged my property and have not tried to make it right.

The crew showed up first thing in the morning in my midtown west apt. they were professional and quick. so easy to deal with and most important part is that they did not add any additional cost even though i ended up adding few extra boxes. they even provided me with free boxes and blankets for the stuff to not get damaged.
I'd absolutely recommend them to everyone i know. and will definitely use them again next time i move!

On the 8th, when I was looking for movers, I Google searched and found them since they were local in Jersey City. Kerry gave me a decent price, so I contracted with them. They agreed to be there between 8-9 on the 10th, and a contract was signed on the 8th. When the truck arrived at 9:10, they loaded everything up and were ready to head to Manhattan by 10. Everything went smoothly with this part, and I was pleased with the progress. When they arrived in Manhattan an hour later, I got a call from one of the packers. He said his boss sent me a new contract, and the price went from $425 to $600, so they wanted an additional $175, as my card had already been charged $425.  They claimed that this was due to surcharges that they weren’t expecting to go from New Jersey to Manhattan. However, we went through all of that on the day they quoted me, and they even said they needed to know locations in order to give me a proper quote. They refused to unload the truck and said their boss wanted cash.  I told them very bluntly how I felt about this extortion. We argued for an hour and a half, but the workers said they were instructed by their boss to wait until I paid them in cash. I finally told them that I had $75 cash, and that was meant to be the tip money for the 3 workers. The guy then called in and Rolando, a manager, said to take the cash. I asked the workers if they were OK with them losing their tip because their boss was going to take the $75. They did the work, and I was pleased with their work. Now that it’s over, I feel that the workers were wronged, I was extorted, and it was a terrible experience.

DO NOT USE STARCITY MOVING. This was the worst moving experience of my life, and I'm a military brat with 30 moves under my belt. I truly believe they pay review companies to post positive reviews, because their service can't possibly be so much better for other real customers. Packers were supposed to arrive at 3 pm. They finally told me at 7:30 pm that they weren't coming at all that day. This after lying to me several times telling me, "The truck is on its way." The packers should have arrived at 8 am next day, but didn't show until 10 am. The movers with the truck didn't show up until 3 pm, so it was close to 6 pm when we finally left for the new apartment. When we arrived at 9 pm at the new apartment the Coop President came to our door to say it's too late to move in. Dean Lester (the owner of Starcity Moving) couldn't understand that this was a Coop President and not a sleazy small time Super looking for cash. He told me this was all my problem, and I better go find the "super and do WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO to convince him". The movers were complaining it was their 3rd job of the day and threatened to walk off. They agreed to finish the job in the morning if we paid for their hotel. We agreed to the hotel, but when they called Dean Lester he told them he wanted the trucks for a more important job in the morning. Dean Lester told them to empty the trucks regardless of where they left the contents. The Coop President had gone to bed, so we tried to move as quietly as possible. There were 2 written complaints against us, which is enough to prevent our new building from renewing our lease a year from now. The movers couldn't look me in the eye as they told me, "Dean said to tell you he'll send another crew in the morning to assemble your beds and other furniture. He said to tell you he's going to make good on finishing this job."  I called Dean Lester in the morning, but he has never returned the call. There was substantial broken glass (pictures and kitchen glass), scratched furniture, gouged picture frames, broken doors on TV cabinet, lost keys to filing cabinet (full of important papers), etc. DO NOT USE STARCITY MOVING.

I moved from NJ to PA. It was very well done, very clear. They said one price before the move and there was no more discussion on the day of the moving (and I've heard so many horrible things about that that I really appreciated it). The service was neat, fast, and organized. They were a little late on the day of the move, but nothing terrible--or unexpected actually.

This was the most frustrating and horrible moving experience ever. First off, I called this company and they said they would come out to do an estimate to get the exact details of what would be involved for my move. The owner, Dean Laster, came out himself and did the estimate. I told him that I've had bad moves in the past and he told me he guaranteed me that this move would be easy, the movers would be on time and get the job done in a professional clean manner. He couldn't be further from the truth.
The day of the move two weeks ago, the movers showed up 3 hours late. I called Dean Laster and one of his employees several times and they said they were pushing to get movers to my apt as soon as possible. He said that the movers were late because they were working on another job. I asked him why as he knew that the move was scheduled for 12pm yet they didn't show up until 3pm. He had no answer for me. Neither did his employee.
The movers show up at 3pm. They come in and look at my stuff and proceed to tell me that the truck they have is too small for all of my stuff. Meanwhile Dean Laster who is so full of it and a flat out LIAR came out to my place before my move and spec'd out my whole apt. and even sent me a quote with all of my items so they knew in advance exactly what was entailed in my apt. move. Then why the h*** did he send movers out with a truck that was too small if they knew exactly what I had in my apt?
So now we had to wait another hour to get a bigger truck to my apt. so they could start the move. This now makes them 4 hours late from when they were supposed to start my move. Furthermore, my building elevators that I reserved for 12pm were now given to someone else who was moving in the late afternoon time slot. On top of that, the elevators at the new building I was moving to were now not available either as they close them off at 5pm until 7pm f. r people coming home from work.
So they proceed to move my stuff and we get to the new building around 630pm and had to wait until after 7pm until we could start moving the stuff in and I had to plead with the management office to let me do so as they didn't have to.
FInally they finish moving the stuff into my new apt. by 830pm. This was 8.5 hours after they were originally supposed to start my move. The whole process was supposed to take 3 hours according to their liar owner Dean Laster. It ended up costing me an entire business day dealing with these horrible movers.
Moreover they moved in my nice couch and they didn't screw back in the legs under my couch. I asked them where my legs were for the couch that they unscrewed at my old apt. and they said they were in one of the big boxes. I looked through all of them and the legs were nowhere to be found. The movers looked clueless and said they didn't know. I was beyond livid at this point in time.
I tipped these guys because they were just the messengers. They weren't the brains of the operations. The owner, Dean Laster, was the one calling the shots and he severely misrepresented his company and lied about the service that he guaranteed he would perform.
The service wasn't performed to any type of satisfactory standard. I have now been calling his office and speaking with different employees there for the last 2 weeks and also sent him several emails and he hasn't returned my call. I told them that they lost or stole my couch legs and they still haven't even responded to this. My couch is now sitting way too low on the ground because of StarCity Moving.
I want to file a formal police complaint and get my just financial reimbursement for the legs of my couch which will cost me a lot of money to replace. I'd greatly appreciate any advice from anyone on here who's had a similar experience.
Response from StarCity Moving

"Dear prospective consumers, Many factually incorrect statements have been made here. This customer confirmed the move with us last second. In fact, we never received his confirmation until the day before the move. On the day of the move, due to elevator delays (there were 3 companies) unloading at the 1st move the crew had that day. We sent a replacement crew that came nearly 1 hour late. To compensate for the delay we sent additional guys to help; in fact there were a total of 5 movers working extremely hard to assist the client. As far as the legs of the sofa are concerned, our movers did indeed take them apart but the customer insisted on taking them himself (in his car). When he wasn't later able to find those legs he blamed our movers. StarCity went above and above to assist this client with his needs on short notice. We tried to do the best we could to send more help to make sure the move was completed in a timely manner. We charged the customer a flat rate and stuck to that price to the penny. Sincerely, Dean Owner"

I would not recommend Star City.  They have you sign a short two-page contract which stipulates the movers will arrive within a one-hour window.  For me this window was 4pm-5pm.  Pretty straight forward.  On the day of my move I had my new landlords waiting and parking spaces reserved in front of my apartment for the moving truck but they were late. After exchanging 5 phone calls with Star City over a 2-hour period, they kept telling me the crew was on their way.  Then they changed their story and said the original crew was on their way but they would send a different crew to get things started.  The first crew to arrive got to my place over 2 hours after the contracted time, at about 7:15pm.  But the leader of this crew told me that they were just there to pack things up but they weren't there to load my stuff.  That made no sense to me but I just needed some kind of work to get started since it was now getting dark out.  Then the crew said they couldn't get in touch with the original crew, who was supposedly "on their way" for the last several hours.  Finally the crew that was on-site started loading my stuff because they had no idea where the original crew was.  I could tell the leader of this crew was visibly upset because they weren't scheduled to do my move and the original crew was MIA.  Finally the original crew showed up over 4 hours after the scheduled time at about 9pm but for some reason half of their crew decided they didn't want to work and left without packing/moving a single thing.  The other two who showed up just stood around and didn't do anything.  They wouldn't let me help and I stood there watching the first crew do all of the work.  We finally got everything packed and unloaded at my new apartment and I didn't tip out the crew that didn't do anything, only the crew who showed up first and did all the work.  Then the experience got worse.  During the move the crew damaged my TV entertainment center (the main TV shelf got crushed).  I contacted the owner of Star City (Dean) to tell him about my awful experience and the damage to my entertainment center.  I was asking for some kind of compensation for two main things 1) the extreme tardiness of his crew which violated the contract, and  2) the insurance claim for my damaged furniture which the contract states I was covered at $0.60 per pound of damaged furniture.  Dean argued that he didn't owe me anything because even though his crew was several hours late, he sent extra guys to help make up for it and even had to pay for their dinner since they worked until close to midnight.  I replied that while there were two crews who technically showed up, only one of the crews did 90% of the work while the other crew (who showed up almost two hours after the first crew) stood around and just talked.  Plus, I added that I didn't see why his buying his crew dinner has anything to do with me since the only reason they had to work into the night was because THEY were late in the first place).  With regard to my insurance claim Dean said that I wasn't covered because pressed wood furniture was not covered in the policy.  I replied that the contract stated I was covered $0.60 per pound and the contract listed NO exceptions to the coverage so I didn't understand where he was getting this exception from.  After repeated exchanges Dean agreed to honor my insurance claim and made it seem like he was doing me a favor by saying that he was going "above and beyond" by giving me the claim but he would not do anything to compensate for the extreme tardiness of his crew.  I said the damage claim was not going above beyond since he was contractually obligated to take my claim. We went back and forth over several weeks and it was no longer productive and we just kept repeating ourselves and no one was budging.  I was simply asking him to honor the signed contract and argued what I saw with my own eyes as I stood there for hours observing his crews.  Dean kept trying to circumvent the contract terms for his own benefit and would not admit that they screwed up.  I have contacted a third party to help me seek damages.  The whole experience with Star City has been awful.  In the end they did complete my move but about three hours late and after damaging my furniture.  I don't know why Star City has customers sign contracts since they seem to fly by the seat of their pants and do whatever they want whenever they want.  While their price was competitive, it has not been worth the overall hassle at all.

"Dear prospective clients, Many statements made by [member name removed] are factually inaccurate. Our crew was only 1-2 hours late. In order to expedite the process we sent him 6 movers and 2 trucks to get the job done. Our movers worked extremely hard to assist [member name removed] get the job done. There was one TV stand that got slightly damaged. Licensed and insured movers are liable for $0.60 per pound. Even though that was mean we would only have to pay [member name removed] $30-40 we offered him $60. Furthermore, the item that got damaged was pressed wood which a lot of movers don't insure at all. The service was excellent from the very beginning. I have used movers in the past with very shady characters and I much prefer this companies system of an upfront price that includes everything except a tip. Other companies use hourly rates and the guys work slow to rack up the hours and charge you additionally per pads, tape, and everything else. Four guys showed up right on time and got to work. They were efficient, fast, and careful. I highly recommend them and if I ever have to move again I will certainly use them.

They put half of my things into storage and half into my apartment. They did it all in one day. They were accomodating. The workers were very professional. The owner is very prompt with getting back with you and they have great prices.

One day they grabbed all of our belongings. Since they had access to our storage unit, they were able to get it all without me being there. They made the move easier. They drove it the entire drive and delivered it promptly and on time. They had the best prices for all of the movers I was looking for.

I tell people all the time about them!

Star City Moving gave us a quote of $700 flat fee for 3-guys, 1 truck, and use of 5 wardrobe boxes.  There was no time constraint.  They didn't need to see our old place in order to give us an estimate, just a thorough phone conversation on what we want them to move.
The three workers were friendly but could have dressed better, not an issue but to show more professionalism.  They divided the work among each other.  Two men would pack the truck with boxes we already packed ahead of time.  The third worker disassembled the furniture, covered it with padding ready for the other two take.
My wife and I also ran out of packing tape and they gladly taped up some last minute boxes for us.
Whenever I tried to help they insisted I do not.
The unloading process was good as well.  There was one main guy who reassembled the furniture while the other two unloaded the boxes and other furniture pieces.  They reassembled everything, understood directions to place boxes in their correct room.  And after all was done, they clean up after themselves.
There were some minor scratches on our newly refinished floor but nothing too major.
I would use this company again if I had to move, hopefully not since we just bought our first home.

Response from StarCity Moving

"We gave the customer an extremely price competitive quote. She was only looking to move a few pieces of furniture items from South Jersey to North Jersey. We had a crew that was coming back from North Carolina that was supposed to do her move. We spoke to the customer a few days before the move to let her know we needed her to sign a Moving Agreement in order to confirm the move. We followed up again twice and sent her emails without getting a response. Given the fact that the customer never formally confirmed her move and was not reachable in the two days prior to her move we didn't want to send out our crew in vain. When she called us on the day of the move to complain we were kind enough so as to offer to send her another crew to come later in the day even though we had no contractual obligation to do so."

DO NOT TRUST starcity UNLESS YOU HAVE A 'BIG' MOVING JOB!!. They gave us a $550 estimate for a 1 bedroom apartment moving. We made the deal. They even faxed their insurance certificate to our new building. 2 days before the move, they called us and said either we had to change the moving date or we had to find another company because they had two other "BIG" jobs on that day. We were shocked!!!!!! They literally sort their customers based on the money they will get; not based on the contracts or the time of agreement. We had to find another company. When we called them to say that we could not change the day so we found a new company, the guy didn't even talk to us. His secretary said he was on another line?!?. He didn't get back to us for an apology or something. It's so unprofessional.
Response from StarCity Moving

"We never actually assisted this customer. There were numerous warning signs beforehand that made us wary from providing him with services. That's why we decided to gracefully bow out before actually rendering services."
