Roto-Rooter Plumbing & Water Cleanup

Drain was unblocked

Job was done, quickly and satisfactory.

This was the first plumber to respond to a clogged main drain for our house. Frank was punctual, friendly and seemed trustworthy. We let him do a diagnostic for $425 + tax.  He snaked a camera through our pipe and said it was collapsed and we  would have to open up the sidewalk and replace the whole pipe which would be $4,000 + tax (after a $1,200 discount)  This all took less than an hour.  No one else had called back so we decided to set up the job for Sunday (3 days later).  Never occurred to us that someone would lie about a collapsed pipe.  Meanwhile, we are modifying all our water usage including toilet, bathing, etc.  Next morning another plumber returned our call and told us that the Roto-Rooter folks make folks believe they have a collapsed pipe when all they need is their pipe cleared of, in our case, tree roots.  Long story short, they cleared our pipes for $200 and we were able to run water through immediately.  These folks knew how the Roto-rooter folks operated because they were once employed by them. Evidently they make very large commissions by selling large jobs and are encouraged to turn small jobs to large jobs.
Don't know what kind of person it takes to lie to people that way and let them live without use of toileting, bathing, etc. for several days.  Needless to say, I cancelled the $454.75 check before calling Frank and leaving him a very detailed message.  In return, he left me a message saying he was honest and would come back over for free (how does that make sense).  He tried calling about 5 more times in a row.  The moral of this story is do not hire Roto Rooter.
Turns out I stopped the wrong check and they cashed  the $454.75....suggestions welcomed.
