As it turned out it was overpriced, and we were not on site. They mislead us with what was done. The air conditioning was not installed correctly. The unit had two different types of coolant. The compressor, and condenser did not match, and it never worked.

This contractor was a personal reference and the experience was awful on many levels over a 6 month period.  Long story but we had over a foot of water on our 1st floor so this work was just part of a larger nightmare.  The contractor had complete "run of the house" as we were not in the house when work was being done.
1. Price - after making many requests for an itemized bill, I suspected that the units were over priced, and found that we paid over 2x the contractor price, in some cases maye 3x.   Even 50% profit is understandable, but over 2x is just unethical.  While it is common for contractors to bundle labor and hardware pricing, I needed to get them separated.  i undertsand the industry and was very understanding about labor and level of effort, not getting a straight answer was my first indication that we had a problem.  The quote we got for the whole job was 3-5K higher than another contractor but given a few extras and trusting this firm was more important.  In the end we overpaid for poor service.
2. Function - the upstairs AC unit has never worked and despite 3 different service calls it was never fixed.  They even blamed us and said, "you should have called" when we first informed them of the AC issue, we need to "tune" the AC.  The unit was installed in Dec/Jan along with the downstairs unit which works.  As weather got warmer it was obvious he unit did not work, after calling in late May and being told it would be a week till they would look at it, they came back 2 or 3 times, talked about "tuning it", never finished, and by that point we had just lost confidence and sought another contractor.  
3.  Comfortmaker units - being concerned about the warranty on the units I also asked that we have a written maintenance contract, again no response other than  - "standard factory".  I got the serial numbers from the units and contacted Comfortmaker - the units were never registered and we would have lost significant coverage had I not done this myself
There is even more to this but you get the picture.
Despite a personal reference, and a relatively "good start" to this job - it was horrible, and we gave E&J numerous opportunities to redeem themselves.  That is one of the reasons this review is so delayed.

Update - turns out the $650 2 ton coil was never installed on the 2nd flr.  When the system was cahnges from the old R-22 system to a new R-410a system, the coil in the attic needed to be an R-410a coil.  The old R-22 coil is still there,  Where is the R410a coil I was billed $650 for?

DO NOT USE this firm

Repaired furnace with new control card.  Didn'f fix problem.  He wouldn't call back.  Got someone else who replaced over temp. limit switch and reinstalled old control card.  I called E&J to return unnecessary control card for a refund.  He will not call me back after leaving at least 7 messages.  Have made complaints to Union County and Hunterdon County.
