Transport took 24 days. They said likely 14, then emailed me 2 days after pick-up to say items would be there in 7-10 days. After the 10 days, a person who did not identify their company or relationship to Prudential, left a message saying the moving truck was broken down in Maryland. From this point forward getting information from the company or its customer service contractor (MovingClaims.net) was miserable. I had the initiate all the phone calls to find out progress. More estimated dates were missed. Once I had direct contact with the driver communication improved.
Driver did not have the proper paperwork to enter CA based on agriculture requirements. Delay while myself and another customer filed the proper paperwork. According to AG office it looked like they tried to froge the document.
Estimator said he would be my primary contact - never heard from him once the move started.
Estimator told me Prudential employees would be loading and unloading. The unloading and moving driver were contractors.
The final price did come in very near estimate based on cubic fee. BUT between estimate and actual move we packed a huge amount more that we originally told the estimator. And we did not move 4 large pieces (woodworking saws) of equipment. Thus the estimate should have been a considerable amount over, but somehow it was not. Packing cost $1,000 which was on estimate, but should have been less based on our packing efforts and the reduction of equipment moved. No way to prove this as far as I know. Estimate was binding which means we wasted a huge amount of time packing.
One general warning, after a long day of packing and loading, the Job Forman then hands me multiple detailed documents to sign. I knew an inventory was coming, but all other documents were presented too. I should have asked to see these in advance so I had a chance to read them when I was not exhausted.
Did not assemble the furniture properly, i had to spend another 6 hours re-assemble my bed, they did not even care to tighten a screw.
Lot of scratches in the furniture, some of the furniture were damaged and never been able to put them back together.
Not all of the movers were responsible, sort of dont care attitude and very careless.
Good:
Very punctual, did not charge anything extra.
However, the delivery side of this move to northern VA was highly exasperating. When we tried to obtain a delivery day/time, the salesman showed indifference through not returning our emails and calls; when we finally reached him, he actually said, and quot;I only deal with the sales end of things.and quot;
The receptionist (who WAS very friendly and helpful) put us in touch with the dispatcher in operations, and we finally got a delivery day/time (four days later than we had been told by the movers in NJ). The driver in VA had no hired team to help him, no mats to protect carpets, and my son actually had to help him move the heavy furniture in. The cocktail table had a broken leg, bed headboard was scratched, and the couch upholstery was slightly damaged. The driver was gruff, intimidating and rushed my son into completing the paperwork. He was so intimidating that my son did not feel comfortable making an issue about damages; he frankly just wanted this guy out of the apartment. The people in the apartment's leasing office told my son that this moving company was known for not being responsive on the delivery side of moves.
I hired Prudential Van Lines to move contents of a storage attic from NJ to Florida. One of the selling points I was told that they are a moving company and not a broker. Their quoted price was in the middle between suspiciously cheap and A-rated carriers.
Because the movers could not come on a Sunday, I agreed to 1-4pm window on a Saturday, with the understanding that they will make an effort to come closer to 4pm. I got a call on a Saturday saying that the movers will be there at 11am - way too early; I had to and quot;fightand quot; to get them there at 1pm, and was told I would have to pay hourly rate for any time they are not busy. Make sure you agree only to the time that you know you will be ready.
The 3 movers were courteous and helped me to tape the boxes. Two big issues:
- I was told to pack the paintings and mirrors, but nothing about necessarily putting htem into boxes. The movers would not take anything that was not boxed. I had to pay $80 for a couple of large boxes to hold the pictures.
- Since I had more boxes that I had requested a quote for, I knew I would pay more, but the lead mover, Oscar, justified the additional money by saying that I have 111 items, whereas when the items were delivered, I realized that he started his count with item number 31, and I actually had fewer items than I thought.
The target delivery date was a Saturday as well. I got a call on Monday or Tuesday morning saying that the items were about to be loaded and that they should be at the destination on Friday or Saturday. Then on Wednesday morning I got a call from the driver of the truck saying that he will be at my house on Wednesdary morning at 8am. Not a pleasant surprise.
The delivery 18-wheeler had two movers. The first thing they did was demand payment for the 2nd floor delivery, although my original quote already contained that. While Prudential Van Lines may be an actual moving company, the company that delivered my items was another carrier. They did not want to hear about the prior arrangement, justifying it that my stairwell had a turn and was 16 steps, not their maximum 14. I was never asked about the number of steps by the sales person. We had been going back and forth, getting Prudential and the delivery company people on the phone. Finally, the delivery company's manager agreed to reimburse the movers for the work.
Overall, my items got where they needed to, but it was not a pleasant experience overall.
