About us
My name is Justin Chernick, I am a Home improvement Contractor with 15 years experience in the industry. I specialize in complete bathroom remodeling and tile flooring. For most of my customers, I help them with ideas, tile selections and anything that will help them with the remodeling job. Your time is important and this type of work can seem overwhelming, so I try and walk my customers through what can seem a daunting task. I have many references outside of Angie's list and photos that I would love to share with you. This is what I love to do, and my work shows it. Thank you.

"Let me start by saying what a nice and kind woman [member name removed] was, when we first started the job. We agreed to do a partial remodel, that would include removing the old tub and tile in the tub/shower area only, re-install tile walls. The existing perimeter of the room, had tile on it. As a cost saving idea, we were leaving that tile in place, and install a wood wainscoting adjacent to the wall. I have done this a few times and it looks great! The customer wanted to keep the existing cabinet, and leave the existing floor. We signed a simple contact, After the start of the walls, [member name removed] said she hated the wallboard, and wanted a price to continue the new wall tile, and replace with new tile. I then stopped the job, and gave her the price to remove that tile around the perimeter of the room, up to 4 ft, new cement board, and more tile. She said that she wanted to move ahead with the work. That is when I wrote a new invoice, including the new work, and crediting all payments made. Obviously, any major change like this, would mean that this work would not be done in the original estimate of a weeks time. She was aware of this. Change of contract was made, signature given. [member name removed] had requested that I not be there for the second week of work, because she had company, then she hurt her back. I started back that next week, then she said that she wanted a price to go all the way to the ceiling throughout the entire bathroom. So I needed to make sure that I can still get that same tile, and give her a new price for more tile, labor and materials. She agreed. She also agreed to replacing the cabinet, I gave her a price to install a new vanity, and she was responsible to pick it out and provide the cabinet and fixtures. I also told her that we need to do the floor, and I would be happy to install that free of charge, if she just covered materials. Change of contract was made, signature was supposed to be given, but she never returned the paperwork. She did leave a voice mail, saying to move ahead with the work. Then [member name removed] got a stomach bug, that kept me out an additional 3 days. Upon returning, after a snow storm, [member name removed] was extremely angry that the job was taking so long. I explained the changes we made, and that the time she needed me away also slowed us down. She couldn't be reasoned with from that point forward. I worked day and night to wrap up the job. I kept asking her for the cabinet , to finish the job, and that is when she said that I should pay at least 50% of the cost because I ruined her other cabinet. I reminded her that she told me to throw it out, but she could not be reasoned with. The job was done, and she wouldn't provide a cabinet for me. So I reinstalled her old cabinet, and fixed the part that she said I ruined. The toe kick, that had old water damage, is what she was referring to. I made it look better than the day I got there. [member name removed], then "threw me off the job", of course the day the job was finished. I told her that the balance was due, and she told me she was withholding the balance of $1,500. I have been kind and patient with this customer, but she knew what she was doing. [member name removed] never planned on paying me everything, from day one. She got her full bathroom remodel for a fraction of the cost. Being threatened my her family was a nice touch also. I have never been anything other than kind and professional with this customer, and to be treated the way they treated me, was wrong on many levels. I have never been screamed at, and have someone try to belittle me that way. I take a lot of pride in my relationships with my customers, but she couldn't be dealt with.. I will be perusing the balance from [member name removed]. Thank you, Justin Chernick"
"Theresa was a very nice customer. There was never any complaints told to me, and if so they would have been taken care of immediately. When I finished repairing her downstairs bathroom, she told me how great it looked, and how happy she was with the matching of the tile. I do not understand this review, especially since she asked me to come back to price additional work. Good luck to you, Ms [member name removed]."
I would hire Justin Chernick back in a heartbeat. The quality of work was outstanding and over and above what
I was expecting. I appreciated the professionalism that Justin and his helper George afforded me as well as being
two of the nicest guys I have had work on my house. Thanks again Justin I will be calling you in the future. I have
already pass your expertise on to a couple of people.
Mixed feelings about hiring Justin- great when I was home to observe the work, but I would never hire him again to complete a job without constant supervision. In my own experience, the way the billing was completed, I wouldn?t hire him again at all. If you were hiring him, I?d recommend a large job when you were going to be home 100% of the time. His craftsmanship on the tile work was good. I was very unhappy with the painting.
Justin was good about responding to email and gave me a quote based on pictures I provided. He charges an hourly rate rather than a flat rate for the job. I expressed my hesitation regarding hiring someone hourly and Justin was open to setting a maximum number of hours for the job.
Initially scheduling the work, Justin was flexible with my schedule when something changed for me at the last minute. On the day of the job, he was approximately 1.5h late (he did call to tell me he?d be delayed) due to a mix up in my address. This meant he started the job at approximately 11 AM. In the 4h he spent at our house that day, he was efficient removing old grout and replacing it (although only completed problem areas). He replaced the shower fixtures, which included purchasing them at the store, since I was unable to pre-purchase not knowing what was type was needed. Additionally, he was a pleasant guy. I had assumed the work would be completed in 1 ?session,? but due to his later arrival, he did not begin painting and he indicated he would let me know a day the following week he would be coming. So, at this point, I was happy with the work that was completed.
I do not have options to work from home. I rearranged my schedule specifically to be home on the day that worked for his schedule. He planned to come around 11 AM on, say a Tuesday. At almost noon, I received a phone call saying his son was sick and he needed to reschedule. I understand that you can?t plan or control when your child is sick, but why would you be calling an hour AFTER you were already scheduled to be at my house to cancel?
We arranged to have him pick up a key and complete the work later that week. I fully recognize that with being charged an hourly rate, this wasn?t the best idea, but as I said previously, Justin was efficient with the first half of the work and had great Angie?s list reviews (looking at them now, the reviews from May 2014 are consistent with my experience, but the work I had done was in February).
To make shorten a much longer story, it took him coming back 4 times to finish spackling (initial spackle was done) and paint our small bathroom ceiling (sink, toilet, tub with no extra space in between). He didn?t use the paint I had purchased, despite this being stated in the initial quote and claimed there was not enough. This was despite the fact that I?d showed him both paint and spackle to use during his first visit and he said nothing about there not being enough paint. Also, he didn?t use the kind of paint I had wanted. I ended up cleaning up paint from my light fixtures, shower fixtures and areas of the floor. It was clear that he hadn?t taped the edges and paint was inconsistent near the wall. Various touch-ups need to be done on the walls as well.
Justin ended up changing us 6h + materials for the job and claimed it took him 11h to complete! As I said, it?s a small bathroom and he was painting the ceiling white. He didn?t leave me a bill as promised and texted me an amount for the job, which resulted in more confusion, because it wasn?t clear this was not the total amount. In ?negotiations,? he emailed us a bill which contained little more information. He over charged us significantly for materials- approximately $100 (as I stated, I provided spackle and paint, which he did not use). He claimed to come in under the number of hours quoted, but this was because I decided not to have several other items completed that were quoted (changing a toilet). He ended up splitting the difference of the disputed cost with us. It made for a very frustrating experience, especially since the right paint wasn?t used so now water beads up on our ceiling and the painting has to be completed again (wouldn?t have happened with the paint I had bought)!
UPDATE: After less than a year, the paint is bubbling and I have to have the ceiling repainted. Very unhappy!
Originally, my appointment was scheduled for April 24th. Later that night, Justin communicated with me via email to apologize
for missing our appointment and he also explained why. At the same time, he told me that he would contact me in the morning.
As promised, Justin called and asked if he could provide the service today. I agreed and he told me what time he would arrive.
He arrived on time and he apologized again. Justin introduced himself. He then asked me to show him the kitchen and bathrooms.
He explained what needed to be done in the kitchen and bathrooms. The price was excellent.
Most importantly, he is professional and his workmanship is superb. Without a doubt, I would hire him in the future and I would
recommend him to friends and family.
