I tried to return a Xmas present book, which I only bought at this store at a price well above the internet price as I was trying to support a local, independent bookseller against the Amazons of the world. An extremely officious sales rep told me that they were unable to track my purchase digitally through the loyalty card they had sold me when I bought the book. He then said I needed a receipt. I pointed out that the barcode sticker clearly showed it was bought at the store. He agreed, but told me that the receipt (given only after the sale was complete and therefore not part of the contract) allowed returns only with the receipt. I asked him if he thought customers really read their receipts. He agreed not. I asked for a refund. He and his manager told me to look at the receipt. I left the book and loyalty card with them and told them without receiving a refund and told them I would not shop there again. This is not how small retailers are going to survive: officious, unhelpful and unresponsive.
