I have visited Fowler's Gulf for years, but this last encounter was really fantastic. After three trips to the dealer, my Volkswagon van 2002 was still running badly and stalling without warning. The dealer replaced a range of expensive components with no improvement. In frustration I figured I'd swallow my losses and take it to Fowlers. They immediately discovered a large crack in a plastic molded piece that channels air from the air filter to the intake manifold. This crack was allowing un-metered air to be sucked into the engine by passing some of the key sensors that inform the engine management computer. The van's computer was showing error codes related to the 'mass air flow sensor' and other parts, but the real problem was a crack the computer couldn't see. Neither could the dealer for that matter.
What I love about these guys is that they are old fashioned mechanics who understand how all the systems work together and can do accurate diagnosis. They are located in a high overhead area of downtown Princeton, so prices are high relative to other shops. But at least you get real value in terms of accurate diagnosis, timely repairs, and really good communication.
