Originally this guy came to change the roof on one end of my house from sloping downward to a V shape. This added an extra room to the end of the house. I had a lot of questions, of course he was very agreeable to everything in the beginning, but when problems arose things got shakey. It seemed like every problem that came up was someone elses fault -per him- but I will tell them to you here and you can decide. He took a reasonable amount of time to complete the job... but then it failed the first inspection: He apparently laid plywood that was too thin to support the new roof. The plywood would have been ok, except the beams were too far apart. The spacing of the beams apparently would have been ok with a thicker plywood, but,of course he placed this thin plywood... so he had to come back and insert new beams in between all the previous ones... The other problem was he didnt have enough support beams in the knee?-wall. So after he put all the beams in the roof, he also had to add knee wall beams.... Chila's explanation for this was that the inspector who came had a bad reputation for being a pain in the "bleep" and the room would have been fine the way he made it. There was also a small argument about the floor of this new room. I thought he had agreed to put one in, he said he didnt. The floor or the ex-attic floor had random pieces of paneling nailed unevenly by the previous owners so that they could store stuff on top. Well... chila apparently did go ahead and do my floor, but he laid some particle board sheets ON TOP of the uneven pieces of paneling (he said it would have been very expensive for me to pay him to tear all of those up)... needless to say I now had a floor that bent whenever anyone over 100 pounds stepped on it AND now it was going to be an even bigger pain to fix it because he coverd it up with the particle boards.... I was more worried about finishing the rest of the job, so I didnt make a point about this, but later fixed the floor myself. Finally, the last problem -which today even makes me nervous- there was a chimney involved in this roof. After he finished the job... it leaked... and it leaked badly. I was now worried that I paid all this money for a new roof and then risked a water/mold problem. He told me that the chimney was too old for him to properly attached the flashing and that I needed to call a chimney guy. Needless to say I did actually call him over when I saw the sunlight peaking through the roof right by the chimney... he fixed this by redoing the flashing, but that just changed a big leak to a little one... so I gave him the benefit of the doubt and called a chimney guy(mostly I just wanted it fixed and I really didnt trust this guy anymore). Oh -I almost forgot about all the extra presents I found behind the wall spaces when I did the insulation: coke cans, cups, nails, scrap wood... Anyhow this whole experience delayed the insulation installation (which I did myself and was a big pain because of the unevenly space beams) and delayed the sheet rock installation (how could I put rock up when the chimney was still leaking?) It took almost a year to finsh this room... I still get goose bumps when remembering the whole experience. :(
Description of Work: Change the roof(new roof) on the end of my house to V shape from sloping down.
