"Our company must have been confused with another. There is no one by the name of Rich working with us. Jim personally handles all estimates, scheduling and going on them. There was never an estimate scheduled by Jim. We simply informed that we do not provide sealcoats except to previous costumers."
I have a fairly large driveway that was totally repaved just three years ago. The area that needed work totaled roughly a third of the entire driveway. I had called many paving contractors and was able to speak to a small percentage of those called. Bottom line is that no one wanted the job because it was too small in their mind. Failing all leads from friends, yellow pages etc, I turned to Angie's List. I refined the list of contractors to those in my area, came up with a list of six, and began calling them one by one. I left messages for the first two or three and on the next call, Jim answered himself.
We talked for a few minutes and I outlined the job. He said he would be in the area that day and would come by -- which he did. He said he might be able to do the job in a week or two and I was shocked. I had gone months trying to cajole (ie, beg) contractors to give me an estimate -- let alone do the job -- and here was someone saying he would be by in a week or two.
After a week went by, Jim called and said he would be able to do the job in a few days. He wanted to meet in-person first to go over the job. When I said that I leave for work early, he said, "no problem, i'll meet you at 6:30 tomorrow."
Not only did we meet at my house the following morning, he was early. we went over the job; he said it would be done that day -- and it was. The repaved portion of the driveway meshes seamlessly with the old. It's perfect. Any time I needed to reach him -- when I forgot a few things (invisible fence line for the dog) -- he answered his phone.
From start to finish, he was terrific. Very nice man who does excellent work. The kind I appreciate as a homeowner and look forward to recommending.
Cons:
SCOPE & PRICE: I have a 40' long driveway + apron which is 18' wide near the garage which funnels down to 12' wide at the entrance, apron & curb cut. The existing asphalt driveway is raised and cracked in many parts caused by roots of nearby trees. I wanted to widen the driveway overall to 20' x 40' with asphalt, pour new lower concrete sidewalk slabs for a better pitch & pour new concrete apron & curb cut. Finished driveway would be plain asphalt, NO perks like Belgian pavers or any specialty items.
The original quote I received was for simply removing and replacing the asphalt driveway as-is. That quote was 2-3 X more expensive than other competitive quotes. However, the quote had nothing to do with the my project scope.
I called Jim back in the fall with permits now in-hand to re-evaluate his numbers and to price my actual scope. While Jim's a nice guy, he clearly didn't want to be hassled with my job. His quote jumped to almost $10,000 but he didn't want to be hassled with DPW inspections for curb cut, removal of dirt etc. His quote was at almost $10,000 and he's asking where on my property can he dump the excavated dirt.
Guess I'll keep looking. Wish some of these AL reviewers would post some pictures of the work.
"Obtaining permits for more than 1 yard of dirt removal is required in Paramus. Several inspections to do a simple curb cut, apron, and sidewalk are also required in Paramus. When permits are required, Jim requests that the costumers obtain the necessary permits. Jim doesn't have the time to obtain permits as he is on each job site most of the day. Jim was interested in this job, however, proper permits were required to begin the work. When Jim gave the estimate, the permit needed for the dirt removal increased the frame and scope of the job . This said, the estimate was out of budget. After being in business for over 30 years Jim has learned that time is money."
"Jim is on the job with the guys every day. He drives the dump truck and during this time, he cannot make or receive phone calls. Jim remembers running late as he was driving the truck. He recalls leaving a message stating that a call back to reschedule this estimate was necessary. He never received a call back for rescheduling this estimate. He apologizes for any inconvenience. As always, Jim's number one priority is customer satisfaction. Unfortunately, sometimes his schedule becomes very hectic and he does run late in which he makes a phone call as soon as possible to reschedule."
"There is only 24 hours in a day. Jim does his best to get in touch with every costumer but unfortunately when he is extremely busy sometimes it is difficult to get in touch with everyone. Every effort is made to call contact everyone who calls."
"Jim makes every effort to contact everyone who calls him. However, it is sometimes difficult to reach people and unfortunately sometimes things slip through the cracks. At this time, Jim is extremely busy and he is making every effort to keep up with the overwhelming amount of calls. Jim is on the job site each day, and he drives the dump truck daily. He does not have a chance to return phone calls until the evening. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused."
