Excellent.  Conducted a site visit and provided subsequent written estimate broken down by task grouping.  After clarifications and some negotiation, set up a schedule for the work, which they kept.  A two-man crew, including the owner [Mike Magrini], worked 20-man-hours doing the tree and shrub trim, and the owner worked a few hours doing sub-surface root fertilization for mature trees lining the street and in berms around the property.  Fertilized and later trimmed 11 mature trees from the ground for appearance and clearance.  Pruned and shaped about 18 mature foundation plantings to enhance curb appeal.  Did extensive trimming and shaping on two-dozen street-corner boxwood plantings and ground cover.  Clean-up was meticulous.  Pesticide application for shrubs and aerial tree trimming is being quoted for future work in late summer.

I am very happy with the service I received. The owner was very friendly, knowledgeable about trees and shrubs, and very responsive. I originally had Pioneer come out to look at a very large evergreen that I thought needed to be removed due to location and growth and to give me an estimate for its removal. As it turns out, I decided not to have it removed after discussing it in length with owner. I was relieved I did not have to have it removed. While he was there, he pointed out the insect damage my shrubs were experiencing and actually showed me the inside of one of the leaves so I could better understand what was going on. He gave me tips to personally improve the health of my shrubs and also about an application to kill the insects

Mike and his helper were both wonderful. We had to schedule a couple of times due to the weather and Mike really worked with me to find a time. He arrived exactly when he said he would. Before he started pruning he asked me exactly what I wanted to accomplish. He consulted me throughout the pruning process to make sure I was happy with the results. He is definitely a perfectionist and his vision matched mine... to keep the tree healthy and looking naturally beautiful. Everything was cleaned up beautifully. My front yard and walkway were cleaner than when they'd arrived! :-) I'll definitely have him back in the future to help with my bushes.

Everything went very well. Mike and his team were extremely thorough and detail oriented when it came to clean-up (shoddy clean-up is a pet peeve of mine). When I asked him to trim some bushes a little shorter due to security issues, he was very customer friendly and did take the time to explain the potential cons of my requests, as opposed to just doing it.

Also, there was a problem with a load bearing branch of a large tree that I want to save. He went above and beyond to alleviate the

extra weight, hopefully saving the tree without ruining the natural shape and allure of the tree.

He accomplished this within his quoted estimated even though it required additional time.

Mike and his crew did an exceptional job. Mike responded immediately when I called Pioneer Tree. He came out to look over the work and then was part of the crew who did the work. It is nice to have direct interaction with the owner of the company. Mike and his crew removed all of the debris from the dead trees and did an excellent job in pruning back a very large gingko tree that was encroaching on our house. Mike was very professional and got the job done quickly. His prices are very reasonable compared to other tree service providers we contacted. I would not hesitate to use Pioneer Tree again and highly recommend Mike.

Mike was not only able to come give an estimate within a couple of days, but to schedule the work to be done in a week.
He answers the phone, which I appreciate, rather than reaching a secretary. One time, he answered when on the road, and then called me back within minutes once he had pulled over.
He respected my concerns about, and went through special efforts, to take care of my property.
Very professional and skilled, he was also friendly and easy to talk to.

He called back the same day of our initial contact, stopped by in two days to see the site, submitted a quote that day and did service in the next couple days.

They weren't interested in the work I had for them. They were kind enough to explain why. It was too small of a job for them. They did recommend where I should get it taken care of. He said he would send me a quote in the mail, but I still haven't got it. I don't think they're interested in doing the work. They are responsive. I called the guy in the morning, and he was out to my house within three hours. The service was very good. I caught him on a rainy day, so he didn't have much going on at all. I appreciated his honesty and recommendation. They were very helpful.
Response from Pioneer Tree And Shrub Care
"We appreciate your input and strive for the complete satisfaction of our clients. I wish to clarify that we are interested in helping with your tree service needs, as we happily perform projects, large and small. A main component of the work was a dead tree covered in poison ivy. I thought I explained that it was a project best suited for winter, for the health and safety of our employees. In addition, it would be more cost effective to perform the other aspects of the job at the same time. Your comment regarding our interest in the job is accurate, however it was due to the time of year and not the size of the job. I apologize if this was not adequately explained to you. I will contact you to determine if you still need our assistance this winter. Thank You!"

Mike did a great job cleaning up the trees, and even removed the poison oak from the shrubs. He was extremely responsive and provided the best price. I would recommend his services to all my friends.

The owner arrived as promised to provide an estimate, which he gave on the spot. He returned as promised with a helper to perform contracted work over a couple of days. He made excellent suggestions during his survey and as he worked. His professional credentials are backed up by his expertise. The price was very reasonable and the service was as described with no surprises.

I called Pioneer and four other companies, hoping to get a couple of estimates. Pioneer called me back within a couple of hours, while they were on the road, and arranged to come over late in the day to look around and give me an estimate since they were going to be driving past my area on their way back home from a job. The other tree companies NEVER called back, not even to say they were too busy, or weren't interested in any work. Guess they don't know the value of growing their business. Pioneer does.

The guys from Pioneer arrived right on time. I showed them the work, and Michael Magrini took notes, then came in and prepared an estimate. We discussed a couple of options for the work - since the trees were on the edge of a heavily forested area, for example, I suggested that they not haul the wood away but roll the chunks of trunk and branches into the woods to both save costs and return the trees to the carbon cycle. Mike told me that was fine for the trunks, but that I'd be unhappy with the way the branches would look, and when I thought about it, he was right. I thought insurance would only pay for removing the one tree that did damage, so Mike prepared an estimate for that separate from the other trees. He explained everything on the estimate sheet, and why he was suggesting what he did. He said he understood my wanting multiple estimates, and to give him a call when I was ready to go. He kept apologizing for and quot;being a messand quot; - but he hardly was, just looked like a guy who'd been working hard, not a mess at all. But that's kind of a sign of Mike's work ethic - he's very concerned about being professional, neat, and doing a good job.

When I got no other calls, and my insurance company was dragging its feet, I called Mike and asked them to come do the work. I sent a deposit, and Mike called when they got the deposit and scheduled the work. The morning they came by, he called me and told me they'd be a few minutes late - and that's all it was, a few minutes. They set to work, and it was fun to watch. They walked up trees, used control ropes to keep the trees from doing other damage - they weren't just cut the trees and hope they fall right. Watching them up and down the trees, my wife thought Batman had nothing on these guys... When lunch time came, they came to the door and told me they were going to lunch and would be back at a specific time, and they were. After a bit, Mike knocked at the door, laughing, and showed me a small tree that they'd worked quite hard to avoid damaging while removing the fallen trees, and said that for a very, very little extra, they'd take the tree down, because once they got the other trees off of it, it was clear that the smaller tree was damaged and dying. He apologized for missing that - again, nice, professional.

When they were done, there were no leaves or branches in the yard, they'd shredded them all, and had rolled the large chunks of wood down the hill. Mike came to the door again to let me know they were done and were leaving, and offered to walk me around to look at the work. I was on a call and couldn't, but later on when I did walk the yard, I was impressed at how cleaned up it was. Mike called in a day or so and checked on whether I was happy with the work. Absolutely!

In terms of price, it's hard to judge, since this isn't work I have done all the time. I honestly thought it was going to be more expensive than his initial estimate, but when I asked what we could do to bring the cost down since I was going to be out of pocket for most of the costs, Mike offered options along with his opinions about whether it'd look good or bad. I'm mistrustful of contractors whose prices suddenly go down with no change in the scope of listed work - it means the original estimate was probably suspect to begin with. In this case, Mike was straight forward about what the work cost, and got me to a more affordable price by changing scope of work, not pricing sleight of hand.

We're going to use Pioneer in the spring for tree and shrub fertilizer and advice, mostly because I felt that their professional approach to this job, their quality communication, and the quality of the work, means I can trust them in things where I may not have a lot of knowledge. Having trees taken down is something no one really buys often, so it's hard to know what's expensive or not, or what's good or bad work. That makes trust much more important, and Mike and his team behaved and performed in a way that confirmed I could trust them.

While I hope we never get a hurricane again... if we do, I know who I'll call, and I won't waste my time calling the other guys.

We also obtained a bid from a national tree service. The national tree service seemed very professional but they quoted a price over double of what Pioneer quoted. The main reason is they offered many more services, which Pioneer said were not needed. This attracted me to using Pioneer because they were not trying to sell me more than what was required. They said they would be happy to do those services if I wanted them done. The owner showed up with his crew and performed as much work as the crew performed. They were very professional and did what they promised to do. I would use them again.
