Also, there was a problem with a load bearing branch of a large tree that I want to save. He went above and beyond to alleviate the
extra weight, hopefully saving the tree without ruining the natural shape and allure of the tree.
He accomplished this within his quoted estimated even though it required additional time.
He answers the phone, which I appreciate, rather than reaching a secretary. One time, he answered when on the road, and then called me back within minutes once he had pulled over.
He respected my concerns about, and went through special efforts, to take care of my property.
Very professional and skilled, he was also friendly and easy to talk to.
"We appreciate your input and strive for the complete satisfaction of our clients. I wish to clarify that we are interested in helping with your tree service needs, as we happily perform projects, large and small. A main component of the work was a dead tree covered in poison ivy. I thought I explained that it was a project best suited for winter, for the health and safety of our employees. In addition, it would be more cost effective to perform the other aspects of the job at the same time. Your comment regarding our interest in the job is accurate, however it was due to the time of year and not the size of the job. I apologize if this was not adequately explained to you. I will contact you to determine if you still need our assistance this winter. Thank You!"
The guys from Pioneer arrived right on time. I showed them the work, and Michael Magrini took notes, then came in and prepared an estimate. We discussed a couple of options for the work - since the trees were on the edge of a heavily forested area, for example, I suggested that they not haul the wood away but roll the chunks of trunk and branches into the woods to both save costs and return the trees to the carbon cycle. Mike told me that was fine for the trunks, but that I'd be unhappy with the way the branches would look, and when I thought about it, he was right. I thought insurance would only pay for removing the one tree that did damage, so Mike prepared an estimate for that separate from the other trees. He explained everything on the estimate sheet, and why he was suggesting what he did. He said he understood my wanting multiple estimates, and to give him a call when I was ready to go. He kept apologizing for and quot;being a messand quot; - but he hardly was, just looked like a guy who'd been working hard, not a mess at all. But that's kind of a sign of Mike's work ethic - he's very concerned about being professional, neat, and doing a good job.
When I got no other calls, and my insurance company was dragging its feet, I called Mike and asked them to come do the work. I sent a deposit, and Mike called when they got the deposit and scheduled the work. The morning they came by, he called me and told me they'd be a few minutes late - and that's all it was, a few minutes. They set to work, and it was fun to watch. They walked up trees, used control ropes to keep the trees from doing other damage - they weren't just cut the trees and hope they fall right. Watching them up and down the trees, my wife thought Batman had nothing on these guys... When lunch time came, they came to the door and told me they were going to lunch and would be back at a specific time, and they were. After a bit, Mike knocked at the door, laughing, and showed me a small tree that they'd worked quite hard to avoid damaging while removing the fallen trees, and said that for a very, very little extra, they'd take the tree down, because once they got the other trees off of it, it was clear that the smaller tree was damaged and dying. He apologized for missing that - again, nice, professional.
When they were done, there were no leaves or branches in the yard, they'd shredded them all, and had rolled the large chunks of wood down the hill. Mike came to the door again to let me know they were done and were leaving, and offered to walk me around to look at the work. I was on a call and couldn't, but later on when I did walk the yard, I was impressed at how cleaned up it was. Mike called in a day or so and checked on whether I was happy with the work. Absolutely!
In terms of price, it's hard to judge, since this isn't work I have done all the time. I honestly thought it was going to be more expensive than his initial estimate, but when I asked what we could do to bring the cost down since I was going to be out of pocket for most of the costs, Mike offered options along with his opinions about whether it'd look good or bad. I'm mistrustful of contractors whose prices suddenly go down with no change in the scope of listed work - it means the original estimate was probably suspect to begin with. In this case, Mike was straight forward about what the work cost, and got me to a more affordable price by changing scope of work, not pricing sleight of hand.
We're going to use Pioneer in the spring for tree and shrub fertilizer and advice, mostly because I felt that their professional approach to this job, their quality communication, and the quality of the work, means I can trust them in things where I may not have a lot of knowledge. Having trees taken down is something no one really buys often, so it's hard to know what's expensive or not, or what's good or bad work. That makes trust much more important, and Mike and his team behaved and performed in a way that confirmed I could trust them.
While I hope we never get a hurricane again... if we do, I know who I'll call, and I won't waste my time calling the other guys.
