I finally spoke to someone and they changed their message but the administrative portion continues to be chaotic.
I called- got an appointment called back in 1 hour to confirm that i could keep the area free that day and was told that that appointment date was no longer available.- maybe they would come the following week. As you cannot walk on the floor and it is an entry hall, this creates some problems trying to re-schedule and I told them this. Call back and they can see what they can do.
So back again to the original date, but I had to call the day before because they cannot say WHEN they will come that date, only do scheduling at 3pm the day before. Needless to say called at 3 & 4 pm the day before and no one picks up the phone- voice mail. Now i dont know if they are coming at 7:30 or 4:30 or at all......not too easy to keep an entry hall off limits for uncertain times or dates. I call at 7am of the scheduled date and asked when I might expect them and that they never confirmed the type of finish on the floor either- the receptionist said they might not do the actual varnishing that day anyway. Then I blow up- are you supposed to keep an entry hall off limits for days on end?
Every time you speak to some one at the office they claim you did not speak to them as they were out that day... I asked for the owners email, phone number or a call back-- of course, no response. The owner never contacted me.
Fortunately the workman did arrive on the scheduled day and finished. The work is acceptable but overall the company is chaotic, disorganized and unprofessional. Cant blame the workmen but the office staff and management are poor. I would have liked to tell this to the owner, but he seems too disinterested to care.
"It is unfortunate that you have a bad impression of our company. I assume that the person that referred you to us was probably an old customer and that is why they gave you our old phone number, which now belongs to our affiliate company which is located in the same building. There is in fact a message on their number indicating the change in case a customer has not contacted us in a while and dials that particular number. That is the message that you heard on your initial call. Our new phone number has been in effect for at least 8 years now. We did not "change" our message after your call, you simply now had the correct phone number. 99% of our communication with this customer was done via e-mail as she was out of the country. An actual phone conversation happened only the day of the job itself. Yes, she did request a date (via e-mail) but by the time she replied (a few days later), the spot was already taken and we provided her with a new date. Customer said she had already made arrangements to have the work done on the initial date, so we moved things around on our end in order to accommodate her original request. We only provide our customer with the time or arrival the day before the work begins, as it is the best way to give them the most accurate information. We are working with chemicals which sometimes don't react/dry as fast as we predict and, therefore, the schedule may vary slightly according to such. The type of finish to be used is always stated on the customer's estimate/contract. This was a one-day job, but since the customer was concerned about not being able to enter the area after the chemical had been applied, we informed her that when time came to apply finish was too late in the afternoon, we would apply next day so that she would be able to have access as she needed. It ended up that we were able to complete the sanding process and the finish application on the same day. The work was performed as agreed, on-time and wit great results. Again, it is unfortunate that [member's name removed] had such a bad impression of our office staff as we did all we could to make the job run as smoothly as possible."
A final observation: I thought they were messy in their clean-up. There was a lot of residue on moldings and bottoms of doors from the sanding that had to be cleaned away with a microfiber cloth. It took me 15-20 minutes to do. I thought it would have been nice for the two gents to do some spot touch-up when they were done. I was not pleased with the scuff marks on the new baseboard moldings, but I was cautioned about that from more than one vendor in my search to get this done.
I have one more bedroom, hallway and stairs to do in the next year or two, and I also plan to remove the wall-to-wall carpeting on the first floor and have them complete the house 5-10 years down the road.
They wasted thousands of dollars of wood by gluing boards before they dry-fitted. They over-glued in several areas, so glue seeped up into the seams between the boards. A sixth-grader could have done a better job cutting and fitting boards around steel columns in the middle of the loft. They damaged walls.
My wife asked for a specific installation pattern for the random-width boards and they assured her that there was enough supply to do the apartment in that particular pattern. Then they ran out of 6" boards halfway through the installation and we had to change the pattern.
I had to buy more wood, and used a less expensive, but much higher quality installer, to finish the job.
They refuse to even acknowledge their mistakes. They have a lame excuse for everything.
