Benson Ver Hage Electric
About us
Family owned and operated in Bergen County, New Jersey since the early 1980's, Benson Ver Hage Electric is a classic Mom and Pop business. Rich and Doris Ver Hage bought the business in 1984 and quickly made it their own. Working side by side, after Rich spent years working as an electrician and manager for others. They grew this business into the multifaceted company it is today. By bringing in two of their sons, they were able to expand not only the workload but also the area they could cover. The business began in Closter, NJ and now has offices in Midland Park, NJ and Wyckoff, NJ. We operate our business out of Bergen County, but we service all of New Jersey and parts of New York and Pennsylvania. By keeping this a family business the family values are strong in the company. The family's strong work ethic makes for availability to their customers twenty four hours a day, seven days a week if an emergency were to arise after hours. The family's moral values assure customers a safe, clean, and friendly experience. All of our employees are fully trained and also believe in the same standards. An owner is only a phone call away for any customer who wants to speak or meet with them. Also serving Staten Island.

My only beef was that they were not so good with proactive communications. The entire process took 6 months from order to installation. The only way I knew the status was to call them regularly myself. I guess I expected updates.
+ Straight-forward with options
+ Handled Permits with the town and inspections
+ Verified that there was sufficient gas pressure in my home to enable the switchover in an emergency
+ Installed the platform
+ Installed the generator onto the platform
+ Installed the plumbing connections into the home for the generator
+ Installed the electrical connections into the home for the generator
+ Performed tests all along the way
+ Always came on time for each step and kept me informed through the entire process
+ Went online during the storm before the final inspection
+ Came on Wednesday after the generator had been running approximately 40 hours to do an oil change
+ They missed the final inspection that Friday -- I presume they were busy (LOL--didn't really expect them to be there that day). Folks were still without power (my street included). The inspector did come out. I showed him that it was currently on and running everything in my home and he gave me the final sticker.
The folks were ethical at each point making sure to do the right thing and always erring on the side of caution for me, the customer.
I know the generator runs about $4,500 and $5,000 (permits, etc. make up the rest) may seem like a lot for the labor, but I had 3 bids and they were in the middle. I didn't feel comfortable with the man with the lowest bid ($9,000) and the highest bid was $14,000. I have since heard of folks that might install a standby generator for $1,500 for the labor, but I haven't met them.
