backed up in the downstairs utility sink and bathroom. We called a
contractor who could not find the cleanout for our main sewer pipe to
the municipal sewer and had to do the snaking through a downstairs
toilet. He concluded the main sewer pipe was seriously deteriorated and
had broken. Next day was Friday, when he e-mailed an estimate of
$10,500 to install a new sewer pipe and repave the driveway and fix any
breaks in the sidewalk.
Early on Friday I decided to get a second estimate, and called John
Burton, who arrived about 2 hours after my request.
John found the main sewer cleanout within about 5 minutes and was
astounded the first contractor had not found it. He also found the
first contractor had incorrectly marked the track of the sewer pipe,
being off by about four feet. Later on Friday 29th he e-mailed an
estimate to do all the work for $7,800, including $624 for a police
officer parked by the driveway to control traffic while the excavator
was operating, and $1,400 for repaving the section of driveway where the
trench had been dug (repaving to be delayed about a week while the
earth and stone in the trench settled, and has not yet been performed
as of the time of writing, because a week has not yet passed.)

On Monday morning Feb 1 I called saying we wanted him to do the work.
Wednesday morning his secretary called and said all the permits had been
issued and a work crew including an excavator had been hired and the
work would be done on Friday Feb 5. I was very very happy to hear
this, because until the sewer line was replaced we had to very sharply
restrict the amount of water dumped in our drain and had to forego baths
and just use the toilets, and dump all kitchen water in the backyard.
On Thursday we were visited by a man from the gas company who marked
the gas line, and one from the water company who marked the water supply
line, in order to avoid breakages.
Early Friday morning it snowed for four or five hous, but the five man
crew arrived on schedule on Friday morning and completed the work by
nightfall. They dug a trench about five feet deep and three feet wide
all the way from our house to the sidewalk. They discovered that the
contractor who built our house had been extremely sloppy and had located
the house end of the main sewer line underneath our front steps. They
managed to dig far enough under the front steps to connect the pipe and
to efficiently relocate the track.
John Burton continually supervised the whole operation, from 10am to
5pm, except for maybe half hour for lunch, making sure everything was
done right. The crew worked almost continuously and did not take any
long breaks.
The township inspector came at about 3pm and approved the work while
the trench was open and the pipe was exposed.
Subsequently the crew refilled the trench, packing it mostly with the
giant pile of earth that had been removed, plus 12 inches of stone on
top. The remaining earth was put in a dump truck.
The work was carefully done without breaking the sidewalk or the
concrete apron of the driveway.
I am very well satisfied so far. As expected, the repaving of the
trench has not yet been done, because the material in the trench has to
settle first.
ONE LESSON I HAVE LEARNED: Always get a second estimate !

I received a call from John (owner) Sunday 8/30 advising me he had moved his shop through an outside company and the screws needed to replace my toilet seat had been misplaced during the move. I told him I had made this appt over a month ago being I was going to be on vacation. He did express how sorry he was and that the pipe under the sink would be repaired. He said he'd make arrangements to replace the needed screws and work with me to replace the toilet seat.
Monday 8/31 John Burton showed up @ 8:15 am just like he said he would. I showed him the problem in the kitchen and it was repaired within 15-20 minutes. He than asked to see what the problem was with the toilet seat.. He checked it out and said if I was patient he would have the problem resolved this morning.
Dwayne from the office called and said Louis was on his way. Louis got to my residence within 10 mins. and started to work to remove the **** screw. After about 30-40 minutes he got the screw out but the toilet seat I purchased was universal and would not fit the non universal Kohler toilet. He said he be back shortly with a toilet seat that fit. Much to my delight he came back and installed the new toilet seat..
I want to thank John and his team for working with me to resolved this annoying problem. They were timely, neat, accommodating, and I felt the price was fair.
I have done business with John Burton in the past and have been very satisfied with this company.
