I had used their services previously and they did a good job. In the beginning, they did some of the work. They had an inspection of the house and readjusted some of the doors. I paid them around $10,000 in total between cash from my own pocket and the insurance check. While I was in Florida, I received the flood insurance check for $7,200. I sent it to A-1 Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning. After they received the check, they never came back to do the remaining work. They still owe me $6,200. I have talked with the owner over the phone and through email and he claims he is going to send the money to me. However, it had been around nine months and I have still not received the funds. When the water came up under the house, it only touched underneath the floor. The insulation worked up the water into the walls. It took almost a year for it to turn to mold. The front of the house is really bad. The house is so damaged now that I just have to sell it. It will probably be sold as a tear down because the walls are so bad.

We have used them for 13 years. We use them all the time. We have a contract with them and they let us know when it's the time for them to come. The guy that they sent for the inspection was excellent. He found some minor things and he corrected them. He even found something when he was up in our attic where there was an opening from the roofing to the ceiling and it had one way. He found it for us, so we had the roofers here today. They are very reliable. We haven't had to really call them. They even call us to tell that they are on their way.

Helped me obtain the flood insurance claim so the work can be done. Including rewiring the house, repairing the floor, bracing the plumbing pipes, fixing the bathroom fixtures, and adjusting and replacing warped door jambs and molding etc.

I called A1 for service on a Rinnai water heater, as Rinnai listed them as an authorized dealer. It was a Saturday and it was an emergency – the unit went down for second time since being installed and my tenant was very unhappy. I was happy to get a human response. Dominic was helpful and accommodating, promising me services that day. He warned that there was a $139 service fee, so even if it was a quick fix, I would have to pay that amount. I said OK. It’s a Saturday, and they were willing to come out, so what can I do?
It was a quick fix. The unit was off due to “leak detection.” It rained the night before and rain water ran back into the unit from the vent. Before the mechanic showed up, I sopped up the water pooled by the leak detector and dried the unit with a hair dryer. I reset it and ran without fail. When the mechanic showed up, I told him I thought I had fixed it. He said “maybe.” And immediately found that the installer had failed to remove a drain plug in the vent pipe which allowed the water to run back into the unit. 20 minutes later, he had the unit hooked up with a hose and proceeded to charge me the $139 and an additional $154 for the drain hose. The mechanic said the $154 was a “fixed fee” related to the type of repair, and was not dependent on the time he spend making the repair. All told, $313.51 with tax for a half hour service call - $600/hour (!!!) as this was essentially an all-labor service call.
I figured that since I had him there and paid my $139 service call fee, I would ask him to troubleshoot the garbage disposal. It needed to be replaced. It would be $280. OK. Write it off to Saturday rates and my need for immediate service. After all, they did come out as promised, and exorbitant rates notwithstanding, they did provide competent service. Or so I thought.
The next day, my tenant called to say that the dishwasher is not draining. I thought, “I’ll bet there was a plug in the garbage disposal the dishwasher outlet that wasn’t removed.” Given the fixed fees charged for no service, I was reluctant to ask A1 to return; if it wasn’t their fault, I could be out another $300. So I called my regular appliance repairman – he found that the A1 mechanic had not removed the dishwasher drain plug. I called A1 to tell them this. They said they would get back to me. They never did.
A simple offer to pay the appliance repair service charge (much less than theirs!) for their error would have avoided this review. That tells me all I need to know about the business ethics of this place.

Needless to say I was disappointed in A-1. If and when natural gas comes to our neighborhood A-1 will not be doing our conversion.

One man arrived at 7:45 AM and immediatly started to work. He was shortly followed by two more workers and could hear them working. They did say heat (gas) would be off for about six hours. They took out the old heater and Hot water heater, and had placed them in the garage. They had already unloaded the new heater (American Std-Trane) and a Bradford White Hot water heater and began to install same. They had to be not only the most courteous and professional folks I have had do work in my home, but also the friendliest!!! They told us each operation as they were about to start. Mean while, they had already pulled off the old air conditioner and had the new one in place within about three hours. I believe it was three men altogether worked all day until about 630 PM. They had already brought in an electrician to wire the heater etc. By then they had the heat on, and hot water was then available as well. At this point they began to clean up as much as they could. Was it perfectly clean, no, but for workmen, it was exceptionally clean. They told us they would be back in the morning to finish the work and install filters etc and they came again at 7:45 and were totally finished and charged up air conditioner, heater filters etc by about 11 AM. I must say I was very happy with their work and the price and professionalism they displayed was truly way above and beyond what I had expected. I would highly recommend this company. They have promised me a cover for the air conditioner which is yet to arrive, but I have no reason to think that they wont follow through.

The service contract was reasonably priced, but their quotes for additional work were routinely inflated, which is why I cancelled the service contract. We got several quotes from them and had several episodes of work performed on the existing unit. I thought their prices were unfair.
Response from A-1 Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning

"We appreciate the Member's business for the time that he was an active customer and would like to see him using us again. However, all clients are always given a straight forward cost in writing before any work/service is completed. If ever a customer feels the pricing is unfair they do not have to proceed with any work/service that we are giving them a price to complete. We look forward to continuing to service clients in Atlantic & Cape May counties as we have done for 40 years."

The owner of the company came out to my house to prepare an estimate for the work ($750 total). I had used them before and thought they did good work, So I signed the contract. The work crew consisted of one person who spent a total of four hours on the job including a trip back to the office that is located about a mile away. The parts needed for the job were minimal - some orifices, metal pipe, and a new spring for the furnace. I estimated that I paid approximately $175 an hour for a one-man crew. I find this incredibly excessive. Also, when I was getting the estimate from the company's owner he was vague about needing a permit from the Township. Keep in mind that the natural gas pipeline through my neighborhood was put in only a year ago so I could not have been the first house that A-1 connected. As it turned out a permit is always required. This is according to one of his own employees and the person I spoke to at the Upper Township Municipal Building. So I ended getting another charge of $155 on top of the original $750 - $55 for the permit and $100 to fill out the permit. I personally went to the Township hall to see what paperwork was needed . It was very minimal, a rough sketch of the work that was performed and some basic information about my property (lot/block #) and the company's business ID. I called and wrote letters to the company stating my unhappiness with this extra charge plus the overpriced original work. I also filed a complaint with the New Jersey BBB. I did not receive any satisfactory responses. Following are brief capsule comments of my complaint that I filed with the BBB: I am not happy with the company's response. I think A-1 took advantage of me. I will no longer have anything to do with their business. To recap, my problems with A-1 are as follows: 1) Work was overpriced to begin with ($750 for one-man crew/four hours total work with minimal parts). 2) A charge of 3% was added to the total for using a credit card (I've never seen such a charge like this before and I have used this company previously). 3) Charging $100 to fill out a basic permit application and then describing it as "extensive paperwork." The owner of the company said he wasn't sure a permit was needed when I spoke to him. Speaking to the Township and another A-1 employee they both said a permit is always needed. If you are going to charge $100 to fill out such simple paperwork, by God, you are going to fill out a permit. So let the customer know upfront.
