Victor had done some work for a friend, and her good report encouraged me to include him in three providers I invited to offer estimates.  One painter came in much lower than Victor and the third one, which suggests he cuts corners -- he was not especially communicative and I didn't follow up as to why the lower quote.  Victor was available sooner than my third estimator and he offered a slight discount as he was finishing a job earlier than expected and wanted to fill the unexpectedly-available time.
I chose my paint colors at Lowe's; Victor recommended Sherwin Williams paint but had them custom-mix the colors to match my chips.  He calculated amounts needed, picked up the paint and charged me $500 for materials.  (I didn't see the receipt, which is a little weird.)  We went around the house and he wrote down all my color choices, offered to paint a small bathroom for free as I'd just discovered my new house needs an electrician, collected a key and set to work.
Victor did a wonderful job.  He was very careful in preparing surfaces, including 'skim coat' over a textured ceiling to transform it into a smooth ceiling.  He removed hardware and replaced it afterwards, filled holes and cracks, primed everything and covered with two coats of color.  He saved up questions and asked me two or three at a time, and offered great suggestions about things like using semi-gloss on paneling the better to preserve the sense of depth.  Of course, my fabulous color-picking skills were critically important, but the house looks great thanks to his care and skill.
Incidentally, my friend had had him come in to finish up a painting job her kids had started.  He smoothed things out and did all the tricky bits they hadn't wanted to attempt, at a very reasonable price.
