Home Adviser suggested them to fix or replace a leaking roof. The roof repair entailed new rafters and extended eaves; the representative then suggested my rear steps were rotting and I needed new ones; total cost: $53,600. On the day work commenced, I asked them to remove the tv antenna from my chimney-- I have cable. The JW representative then told me the chimney was shaking: I should take it down 1/2 way and have it rebuilt. A few hours later he said we need a new relining systems, add'l cost of $19,000. A few hours later, he told me the chimney had black mold and had to be completely rebuilt, another $67,500. He never convinced me there was a problem but the chimney was already half torn down. I later learned the permits were not obtained when any of the work began, costs on the applications given to the town were $7,500 (the chimney), $8,000 (the roof), and $9,700 (the steps). The job took three months. When doing the roof, they took down the aluminum canopy off the front door, when that job was done they did not reattach it but left it laying on the front lawn for 2-1/2 months. The town shut them down for over a month as they were doing the porch without permit approval; once they got the permit, it took them another month to finish that. In the process they were asking for payments ahead of the schedule they originally gave me ("We need money to rent an auger drill and buy cement" despite my having already paid over $91,000. Once the steps were completed, I learned that despite what they told me the roof and chimney were never inspected. The workers left pieces of brick and stone from the chimney on a newly sown lawn (which I am still cleaning up). Then the chimney and stairs failed final inspection. After JW (theoretically) fixed them, the 2nd inspection failed again. They would not return my phone calls. I will have to hire someone else to do the job they didn't do. I am sick of J. Wellington. I feel I was charged too much ($140,000) for work that took too long (3 months); in the case of the chimney and steps, was unnecessary.; and done without proper authority from the town. If you're still thinking of hiring them, google "James Wellington, Mahwah, NJ" and the Chief Construction Foreman (late of the defunct A-Riteway Construction) "Leonardo Petrosillo, Riteway Construction." You have been warned.
I never want to see J. Wellington Construction LLC again and cannot recommend them. The words "Den of Thieves" come to mind.
