Tamke has done tree work for me over the years. When Hurricane Sandy struck, a large tree limb when through my garage. I called Tamke and they came out quickly and removed the limb. I have always found Tamke very responsive and they do a great job.

These guys were great, they did exactly what we asked after Hurricane Sandy dropped an oak tree over both of our cars. Very professional!

Key lesson learned: avoid, if at all possible, contractors that charge by the hour . We paid at least 50% more than what the salesman had led us to expect during the initial estimate, and the crews ended up doing less than what we had initially agreed to in the job agreement.

Our property experienced heavy tree damage as a result of the October/November 2011 blizzard. We called about 5 or 6 different companies and all were swamped with requests. Found Tamke's contact from a crew truck parked near our house and called to get an assessment. We got an estimate from Gerry (our sales point of contact) fairly quickly, but from that point on communication went downhill. They took almost 1.5 months to complete the job, coming out on four separate occasions, charging for anywhere from 4 to 9 man hours (at $90 per man hour) each time. They never called ahead to say when they would come; we would just come home one afternoon or evening to see that a little more had been done on the trees. We would call Gerry to find out when they could come to finish the job but we wouldn't hear back for at least a week, if at all. Granted, Gerry allegedly had been out sick part of the time; in that case, we would have expected to get status updates from one of his partners or another back-up at the office, but that never happened.

The other most dissatisfactory aspect of our experience was how we were charged for the job. We were not home most of the time to observe each visit. That in itself was not the problem, since we knew this would be the case when we signed the release. However, the two times we DID see the crew in action made us question the transparency, accuracy and fairness of the whole process:

1) One Saturday, we saw two men come from 12-4pm, during which they actually worked for no more than 2 hours (equalling 4 man hours), spending the rest of the time eating lunch, chatting, having coffee, and perhaps waiting for additional help to arrive. Yet we were charged for the total of 8 man hours.

2) Another Saturday, the final visit, two men took a combined 45 minutes to take down the ash trunk (all limbs had been removed on prior visits). We were charged a total of 4 man hours.

From these experiences, we could only assume that we were billed similarly for all the other visits.

When we got the bill in mid-December, all we got was a final amount due. We asked them to break down each visit --- how many crew members, how many hours worked, how much time used for travel, how much down time taken for meals/breaks, etc. The sales department was unable (or refused) to furnish these details, only giving us the total number of man hours logged per visit.

We decided not to fight them on the charges, as our initial release/contract did not specify the final agreed-upon amount (dollars or man hours). We will never use Tamke again; a self-proclaimed and quot;tree expertand quot; that takes 1.5 months to take down one tree and remove broken limbs from two others, however neat a job they do, is not an expert in our eyes. Especially when they mislead and overcharge customers for services rendered.

So we have given our next (bigger) job to another local company, who charged LESS to do all of the following: remove three trees and chip all wood, trim three other trees, and ground two stumps, all within the span of 6 hours. Wish we had hired them the first time around!

I have a very large yard and Tamke is totally professional. Pleasant, professional, knowledgable.
They take care of tree, shrubs, etc., triming and feeding on a regular basis or a one time basis.. For yearly servce contract,
they always came when scheduled, and were professional both personally
and in business dealings. I highly recommend them.

My experience with Tamke Tree Experts Company was absolutely excellent. The primary reason we used them was because they were both insured and bonded. The trees were to close to the house so it was a difficult task. Their service was costly but we got what we paid for. We would use them again in the future.

They were really professional and great to work with. They had actually outsourced the stump grinding work and the person who came for the job did not do it correctly. So, they sent him right back out again immediately, which was great. They were very responsive. Their price was lower than other estimates that we had got.

We contacted the company and a return call was made quickly and the salesman came that day. The price was fair with what we wanted to get done. He said in a couple of weeks. They never called when they would come for the cutting down of trees. They just showed up on a Saturday morning as we were heading out the door. Of course we needed to stay and we were late for our appointment. I specifically called them to call before the second part of the job which was removing the stumps and roots. When I returned home from an errand they were sitting in my driveway. Part of the job was to remove all debris, they left all the roots in a pile in the back yard and their truck leaked a six foot oil spill on our driveway. There is no customer service department or manager to file a complaint with, just your salesperson who we have spoken to on many occasions. 4 weeks later , no resolution on clean up. I would not recommend them.

They did a great job. Gil came out out assessed the work. Once I signed with them, a week later, the workers came out and did the work. They did exactly what I asked for. Both men who showed up were processional and both spoke clear English. They completed the work an hour early and without incident. Their price was $400 cheaper than their closest competitor. I am very happy!

They've always performed what they say they will and come when they say they will. We've been happy with them and generally we use them whenever we have any tree work. What they recommend is reasonable. Sometimes if we ask questions about doing something imparticular they will say it's not necessary so they aren't trying to take advantage of every oppurtunity even if it's not appropriate. They have certified arborists and they are very well informed and highly certified in the state certification program. Not all companies have that level of expertise or send people with that level of expertise. With Tamke those people are available and accessible. I think the quailty of work has been uniformly high. They schedule us promptly and are punctual, which is not typical of all companies. I've never seen anything but compeltely professional behavior. They back what they say with literature and have an honest effort of informing the customer what the justifications are for anything they recommend.
