Thomas, the owner, provided a very detailed written estimate of all the equipment, supplies, and labor costs. I found this to be very helpful as several of the other contractors that provided estimates gave ballpark figures. He was very helpful in the selection of the appliances and other hardware as well as vendor/supplier selection.
The work started on schedule and was completed within the time frame that was outlined in the proposal. TGC handled all the permit acquisitions and pickups/exchanges at equipment suppliers (tiles, appliances, lighting, etc). I've had experiences in the past where contractors would not show up or had to be tracked down, this was absolutely not the case with this firm. All calls were returned promptly, staff were onsite when they were supposed to be and they stayed several evenings and weekends in order to finish on time. I was happy with the costs for the services that were performed and any deviations from the original estimates were discussed and explained. When the job was complete, it was really complete; there were no loose ends or follow-up required. All loose ends were tied up and questions answered before the left.
Thomas always took time to answer questions, provide information, address the pros and cons of different equipment and design scenarios.
I highly recommend TGC and will use them in the future.

Garage Door. Two problems with the installation of the garage door. When Tom began the project, we had power in the garage. After he removed the existing door, he reported that there was no longer power in the garage. The only explanation for this is that in the removal of the existing door, he somehow severed the line between the house and the garage. (It was buried and he could not locate the conduit. Tom's solution was to jerry rig an exterior line from our outside light to the garage. This was unsightly and did not conform to code. Eventually we hired an electrician to run a new line to the garage, which involved digging a new trench under our patio, etc, at a significant cost to us to say the least.
The second problem with the garage door is that he never installed an exterior release, meaning that if we lose power or the door mechanism malfunctions, it is impossible to open the garage door. This is exactly what eventually happened, again causing a major headache and expense. (When I contacted Tom about this issue, he informed me that he did not provide a "workmanship warrantee" and refused to address the problem.)
The front and back door installations each had problems. We ordered a very expensive wooden front door and side panels, costing thousands of dollars. We selected the style, Tom ordered. When the door arrived, it was hung on the right side, instead of the existing left side. This was a careless oversight on his part.
The new front door was prehung, but when installed it did not close properly. Tom wanted to plane the door, which I absolutely refused. A prehung door should open and close perfectly, and the only reason it did not was because it hadn't been installed properly. Tom was able to make some adjustments which helped, but did not entirely resolve the problem.
The back door included a glass storm door. To install the storm door, Tom had reconstructed the door frame. After about a year that came apart and the door fell off. The back door proper was never quite right and does not provide a complete seal from the weather. Unless the temperature is below 40 degrees, the deadbolt is extremely tight.
In our living room we had a large mirror, about three feet by five feet, on the wall that had to be removed for the wall to be painted. Tom broke the mirror in the removal process. His solution was to cut the mirror down and leave us with a smaller mirror. Eventually he simply left the mirror in our back yard for us to deal with.
At the end of the project, there was a very small balance of under $200. This represented a portion of sales tax that had been added to the bill. I questioned why he was charging us sales tax, because these were capital improvements which do not incur sales tax. Tom refused to accept a capital improvement certificate, giving me some nonsense that it had to be given at the beginning of the project. Tom was insistent that he must collect this sales tax, which I refused to pay.
Some of Tom's work was excellent. The roof that he installed has never leaked, and the renovation of the living room was quite good.
Regarding the overall rating. This was difficult. If I were to rate him on the doors, I would give him a D or and F. For the interior work, I would give him an A. The C rating reflects the overall quality of his work and the other difficulties.
I see that Tom has responded with the "disgruntled customer" line. How original. As my review clearly stated, there was a tiny balance which Tom tried to collect from me, which was sales tax, which I did not and do not owe. I did not ask Tom to do more work. I asked him to help me with the garage door because he did not install the exterior release. I tried to be objective about my review, and I did note the positives. Every word in my review is true.
"This is a disgruntle past client who still owes us past bill from 2008. When we try to collect four years ago he simply refused to communicate with us to resolve on this matter. We tried email, phone calls and letters. No response. After four years he has contacted us again to do more work for him at this location. Which we refused due to our past experience with him. Now after two days of our refusal he posts this review for work we did four years ago. ???? If this is your company would you honor any warrantee (none given in his case) if a client refused to pay or communication on the final bill. He states on this website that the front and back door came apart after one year and after 3 years of having these door in bad condition you are letting us know now. If it did happen as he claims why didn’t he call us 3 years ago when it came apart???? Bottom line here is why is he calling us back to do more work for him if we did such as bad job the first time around. And why this bad review only after our refusal of work for him in the future. It is unfortunate that there are bad contractors out there people have to deal with but this door works both ways."
